because a 4.5 month wait from contest announcement to the first match would be brutal and ridiculous.

Don't think it's been much beyond 2 months, if that. Personally, I hate these month-long nomination period we have now and wish we'd go back to nominations being open less than 1 week. Like, I'd be so happy if I got back tonight and found that nominations were closed, even though I still have 7 open nominations.

Yeah, I'd liked it better when we had a much shorter nomination period. We don't need more than a week. The majority of them are made during that span of time anyway.

With nominations on just this board that's pretty good. That means at least 667 people have filled out a nomination form, never knew so many people came to this board even if we take into account that some people may have been rallied to nominate.

People from board 8 probably spread this around to other boards.

Ideally, nominations and bracket making should take one month.

Noms - one week. They should be up on the front page immediately. I really don't care if it's announced to B8 first.

Bracket making - three weeks. Plenty of time to argue. Heck, plenty of time to fill out the bracket, leave it alone for a week, and then check it again to see how crazy you were a week ago. I try to do this every contest.

Why are you making this all about us saying Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi games are masterpiece stories? All you said was that Majora's Mask was the only time Nintendo made a storyline worth taking seriously this decade, and I simply replied that those storylines are worth taking seriously, because they are. They're fun, simple, and I actually care what happens.

Now if you were to ask me the last time Nintendo made a game with a masterpiece story, I'd respond somewhere in the general "Never" category.

When talking about video game stories, the bar is set pretty damn low. Either they are paper thin, bare bones plots that gives the creators an excuse to do crazy ideas with the gameplay or they devolve into overblown, bloated, pretentious messes(or maybe that's just MGS2/4). Either way, Paper Mario falls in-between the two. It never takes itself TOO seriously(this is a Mario game, after all), but its endlessly humorous, clever, has a countless amount of fun characters, and keeps the player engaged in the central plot(especially with the post-chapter intermission/interludes with Peach/Bowser).

And I certainly do not agree with my words being taken out of context. - Vlado
red sox 777 | Posted 9/3/2010 12:53:58 PM | message detail
My favorite video game stories are the ones that work a lot with atmosphere instead of trying to hard to be literary with the characters and with messages and stuff. OOT, for example, creates a really engrossing atmosphere that makes the player care about its world, while having a really thin plot. The ultimate goal is to draw emotion out of the player.

Have we had any word on whether slightly updated remakes are allowed?

...Kind of. I sent a feedback ticket in the day nominations started, and just got an answer in the past few hours.

---

The relevant part of my question:

"There seems to be some confusion regarding the eligibility of remakes of games that would otherwise be ineligible due to being released before 2000. For example, Chrono Trigger shows up as a game that can be nominated, due to the DS port/remake it received. Similarly, Super Mario 64 falls under a similar situation, as I'm sure many other games do.

Personally, I've assumed that regardless of that, that none of these games are truly eligible, falling under the "re-release" exception, however, given that a number of these games, such as the aforementioned Chrono Trigger and Super Mario 64 remakes introduced some changes, whether it be new content such as dungeons in the former, and additional characters in the latter, has caused discussion over whether that is enough for them to be considered separate enough that they qualify for entry in the contest."

And the answer:

"That will probably be a case-by-case decision made after all nominations are in."

---

So, hard to say. It sounds like there is a point where a remake will be considered different enough to count, but I'm not sure where that line will be.

You figure he could've at least commented on CTDS and SM64DS!

Yeah, my question was more in general, only bringing those two up as examples, but I hoped they'd get an answer. Personally, I don't think CTDS would count, if it does, then I have to believe almost any remake with any additional content would make it, at which point, "case-by-case" doesn't seem to be necessary because it would only really leave re-releases, which are specifically excluded, or ports, which are already mentioned and stated to count as one entry, so you could just point to the original versions and say they aren't eligible based on that.

I also still don't think SM64DS counts, however, I admit I'm a lot less sure about that. I think there's definitely a chance it could count now, which is more than I'd have said before getting a reply on that.

Have you people actually played SM64DS? There's a lot different than the original. Trust me, I actually got all 150 stars in the game. Yeah, the game controls like ass, but the game is more SM64 1.5 than an enhanced port like CTDS. It's definitely closer to the REmake side of things.

Also, again restating that the Paper Mario games have some kickass stories that blow away 75% of most jRPG stories.

Finally, don't think I saw it stated in this topic yet, but nominations are announced on the front page.

Just noticed that there is a link to the nomination page on the homepage. This should really boost nomination totals.

By the way, when do we expect this contest to start? I think it'd have to start by the beginning of November by the earliest to avoid delaying the GOTY polls by too much, otherwise, we're talking mid-January.

The contest starting time depends a lot on what the contest format will be and how many games will be in the bracket. Here are several possible contest formats and what I think should be the latest possible date for the contest to start:

128 games, 1v1 contest with 12 hour matches - No later than October 10th
128 games, 4-way contest with 24 hour matches - No later than October 10th
64 games, 1v1 contest with 24 hour matches - No later than October 10th
64 games, 1v1 contest with 12 hour matches - No later than November 10th
32 games, 1v1 contest with 24 hour matches - No later than November 10th

For first 3 contest formats, the contest would end on December 11th. This would allow for some regular polls before Christmas arrives. Since the Christmas poll will definitely be "What did you get for Christmas (or another December holiday)?". And after that, we get into several days of "Got Console?" polls, with the GotY polls starting on January 1st.

For a contest with a format of "64 games, 1v1 contest with 12 hour matches", I don't know when the contest would switch over to 24 hour matches. If the 24 hour matches start for the first time in the semifinals, the contest ends on December 12th. If the 24 hour matches start for the first time in the quarterfinals, the contest would end on December 14th. Not much of a difference.
