This gets me thinking, are there any characters with decent strength from games that aren't strong here? I'm not talking characters who have strong series but weak individual games like Mega Man or Kirby, and obviously joke characters don't count. Of course, that criteria is still pretty vague and subjective, but hey, we still got time to kill.

The Kirby series isn't strong, so yeah, you just named one.

Kirby gets some of his strength from Smash Brothers, which he is less popular than. And Dante, Ryu H., and Kratos are all more popular than their games because of character design, one of the exceptions to games being stronger than characters. And Kratos isn't that much stronger than his game anyway.

I'm willing to bet more than half of Kirby's strength comes from Smash, and most of the rest comes from design. You never see anyone talking about Kirby's games.

Though some people were all hyped about Star Ocean > Pokemon.

Just take a look at the site 3 years ago and compare it to now, Pokemon isn't just a board a thing.

As for Pikachu Leon got 58% on him in 2k7, today I'm sure most people would take him to beat Leon or at least expect a nail biter match.

Well I've always liked Samus most for her character design over her games (only two can really be considered "classics". I thought Other M could remedy this but apparently not), and after that I'm not the biggest fan of the Smash series (they're certainly great games but come on, best games ever? Not even close), so it makes sense for her to be in the Dante/Kratos/Hayabusa mold since I'd imagine that to be the case here.

Though I'm playing Super Metroid now and it's actually rather saddening that this thing has gotten SFF crushed by Link to the Past twice (LttP is still the better game, but not nearly by that much!).

I don't think it matters, besides his degree of win.

Sprite Pikachu is scary, after some comparisons with other Solid **** matches Sprite Pikachu is about as strong as Squall.

Not quite that strong I think, but pretty strong nonetheless. Pikachu did about 2% better than Yoshi did in 2006, against a stronger Snake. If 2010 Snake puts up 53% on 2006 Snake, that gives sprite round Pikachu about 55% on Yoshi, or 47% on Squall using Squall/Yoshi 2008. Sprite Pikachu got 46% on Sprite Crono in 2008, so that lines up pretty well!

But that wouldn't be the first time I'd take easy points!

Oh hey, here's a relatively good comparison: Commander Shepard vs. Vault Boy, who wins and by how much?

Not to mention New Vegas coming out soon should help Vault Boy out a bit.

Even with that, I'd probably still pick Shepard since he's a fleshed-out character. Vault Boy win wouldn't be too surprising though since Fallout 3's the #3 game for this gen (though MW2 and/or FF13 may change that).

What's Other M going to do for Samus? On one hand you have the fact that it's a high-profile game for her. But on the other hand I have seen a lot of backlash against it, and from what I've seen of it derails her character severely.

Speaking of which, do we know of any examples of characters declining in strength due to getting more exposure?

Not that I know of- generally the worst that happens is nothing. Samus is already really strong, so it probably gives her a very small boost if anything.

I don't imagine Other M will have much of an effect. I don't truly believe a new game can truly weaken a character, though I agree some high profile games help less than others do. Wind Waker, etc.

I'd rather blame it on the new Sonic games not keeping up with the older games so as older gamers retire Sonic ends up getting weaker.

Shadow 2k3 was a fluke and while he has gotten weaker I wouldn't blame it on his games.

I dunno. Sonic's dropoff since 2006 is just so sharp that I can't simply say "Old Sonic fans aren't coming here anymore." I mean, CT's 15 years old, and they never had a dropoff that sharp.

You're being too kind, the new games are just bad and sometimes almost laughable. Sonic has gone from competing with Mega Man over the 6th strongest character spot to being roasted by Auron in a 4-way and in very serious danger of losing to any number of Square near-elites.
