Well,
I just tried to think of characters I like from games I don't like, and
can't really think of very many, so I suppose that's true. --- Crono > Sephiroth. 7 years of waiting, and perhaps many more to go. Remain steadfast. |

From: red sox 777 | #451 This gets me thinking, are there any characters with decent strength from games that aren't strong here? I'm not talking characters who have strong series but weak individual games like Mega Man or Kirby, and obviously joke characters don't count. Of course, that criteria is still pretty vague and subjective, but hey, we still got time to kill. --- Wylvane Shadow_Ryoko is a horrible user. |

From: Not_Wylvane | #452 The Kirby series isn't strong, so yeah, you just named one. --- http://img.imgcake.com/ultigardenpngba.png |

I'm not talking characters who have strong series but weak individual games like Mega Man or Kirby I'm not so sure about Kirby... --- Calintares made a whole lot of geolocation x-stats Congrats to Dr. Football for winning the Guru. |

And depending on your definition of strong, Dante, Kratos, and Ryu Hayabusa potentially apply. --- "I can set you free, mate." "My freedom was forfeit long ago!" |
LOLContests | Posted 9/10/2010 5:21:37 PM | message detail |
Kirby
gets some of his strength from Smash Brothers, which he is less popular
than. And Dante, Ryu H., and Kratos are all more popular than their
games because of character design, one of the exceptions to games being
stronger than characters. And Kratos isn't that much stronger than his
game anyway. --- "Ahem! There is *sand* on my *boot*!"--Kefka Dr. Football beat me, Yesmar in the 2010 Guru Contest! |
UltimaterializerX | Posted 9/10/2010 5:32:48 PM | message detail |
I'm
willing to bet more than half of Kirby's strength comes from Smash, and
most of the rest comes from design. You never see anyone talking about
Kirby's games. --- `·.,¸¸,.·´¯`·.,¸¸,.~*ST*~.,¸¸,.·´¯`·.,¸¸,.·´ "I am mentally incapable of reading because I have ADD." -Albion |

I'd also argue that Samus wouldn't be noble nine material if it wasn't for Smash. --- Calintares made a whole lot of geolocation x-stats Congrats to Dr. Football for winning the Guru. |

Samus is another solid example, considering how underwhelming her games are here and how mediocre overall her series is. --- Wylvane Highwind89 is a horrible user. |

You don't need a contest to know that Pokemon wasn't hated by 2k6 I even considered Pokemon > Metroid for a while. Though some people were all hyped about Star Ocean > Pokemon. --- Calintares made a whole lot of geolocation x-stats Congrats to Dr. Football for winning the Guru. |
LeonhartFour | Posted 9/10/2010 9:36:44 PM | message detail |
I
mean, how do we know that Pokemon was more neutral than loved in 2006?
The only Pokemon matches we saw that year were Star Ocean, Metroid, and

It's hard to say. Has Pikachu really gotten that much stronger the last three years? --- "Spoil it for me. I'm never going to play that game so I want to know if he's going to be another Auron or another Sin." - Soul about PW/Jecht |

Just take a look at the site 3 years ago and compare it to now, Pokemon isn't just a board a thing. As for Pikachu Leon got 58% on him in 2k7, today I'm sure most people would take him to beat Leon or at least expect a nail biter match. --- Calintares made a whole lot of geolocation x-stats Congrats to Dr. Football for winning the Guru. |

LinkMarioSamus | Posted 9/10/2010 9:51:24 PM | message detail |
Well
I've always liked Samus most for her character design over her games
(only two can really be considered "classics". I thought Other M could
remedy this but apparently not), and after that I'm not the biggest fan
of the Smash series (they're certainly great games but come on, best
games ever? Not even close), so it makes sense for her to be in the
Dante/Kratos/Hayabusa mold since I'd imagine that to be the case here. Though I'm playing Super Metroid now and it's actually rather saddening that this thing has gotten SFF crushed by Link to the Past twice (LttP is still the better game, but not nearly by that much!). |

charmander6000 | Posted 9/10/2010 9:53:56 PM | message detail |
I don't think it matters, besides his degree of win. Sprite Pikachu is scary, after some comparisons with other Solid **** matches Sprite Pikachu is about as strong as Squall. --- Calintares made a whole lot of geolocation x-stats Congrats to Dr. Football for winning the Guru. |
LeonhartFour | Posted 9/10/2010 9:56:15 PM | message detail |
The sprite round definitely matters. I'd take Leon to win pretty comfortably with a normal match pic. --- "But you have been given freedom. Freedom to be...outside." "I am lightning...the rain transformed." |
red sox 777 | Posted 9/10/2010 9:56:51 PM | message detail |
Sprite Pikachu is scary, after some comparisons with other Solid **** matches Sprite Pikachu is about as strong as Squall. Not quite that strong I think, but pretty strong nonetheless. Pikachu did about 2% better than Yoshi did in 2006, against a stronger Snake. If 2010 Snake puts up 53% on 2006 Snake, that gives sprite round Pikachu about 55% on Yoshi, or 47% on Squall using Squall/Yoshi 2008. Sprite Pikachu got 46% on Sprite Crono in 2008, so that lines up pretty well! --- Crono > Sephiroth. 7 years of waiting, and perhaps many more to go. Remain steadfast. |

From: charmander6000 | #480 Probably. But that wouldn't be the first time I'd take easy points! Oh hey, here's a relatively good comparison: Commander Shepard vs. Vault Boy, who wins and by how much? --- "I couldn't stand a day without a past or future. I need to live each moment to keep fighting here and now." |
charmander6000 | Posted 9/10/2010 10:09:44 PM | message detail |
Probably Shepard back then. By next contest I'm not sure, if Mass Effect 2 flops in the GotY then probably not. --- Calintares made a whole lot of geolocation x-stats Congrats to Dr. Football for winning the Guru. |
Not_Wylvane | Posted 9/11/2010 5:18:47 AM | message detail |
Not to mention New Vegas coming out soon should help Vault Boy out a bit. Even with that, I'd probably still pick Shepard since he's a fleshed-out character. Vault Boy win wouldn't be too surprising though since Fallout 3's the #3 game for this gen (though MW2 and/or FF13 may change that). --- Wylvane Ainoxi is a horrible user. |

What's
Other M going to do for Samus? On one hand you have the fact that it's
a high-profile game for her. But on the other hand I have seen a lot of
backlash against it, and from what I've seen of it derails her
character severely. Speaking of which, do we know of any examples of characters declining in strength due to getting more exposure? --- Ours is not to reason why, ours is but to do and die. |
red sox 777 | Posted 9/11/2010 12:43:20 PM | message detail |
Not
that I know of- generally the worst that happens is nothing. Samus is
already really strong, so it probably gives her a very small boost if
anything. --- Crono > Sephiroth. 7 years of waiting, and perhaps many more to go. Remain steadfast. |

I
don't imagine Other M will have much of an effect. I don't truly
believe a new game can truly weaken a character, though I agree some
high profile games help less than others do. Wind Waker, etc. --- :> |

charmander6000 | Posted 9/11/2010 9:27:59 PM | message detail |
I'd
rather blame it on the new Sonic games not keeping up with the older
games so as older gamers retire Sonic ends up getting weaker. Shadow 2k3 was a fluke and while he has gotten weaker I wouldn't blame it on his games. --- Calintares made a whole lot of geolocation x-stats Congrats to Dr. Football for winning the Guru. |

You're
being too kind, the new games are just bad and sometimes almost
laughable. Sonic has gone from competing with Mega Man over the 6th
strongest character spot to being roasted by Auron in a 4-way and in
very serious danger of losing to any number of Square near-elites. --- :> |
