None of us know a thing about GameSpot either, but you were the one who thought Lance Vance winning that fourpack was a gimme!

I also picked Sephiroth to lose in like round 2 or 3. I saw many people here picking him to go all the way to the semi-finals.

Like I said, it's all just a guessing game.

The only reason for that is because of 4chan! Without worrying about them, Sephy doesn't lose until Ocelot.

I would take Mario Kart 64 over SSB 64. Not that I have doubts about SSB, but MK64 looked damn good in the first round *while* being leeched. It only looked disappointing in R2 due to Fourth Place Factor. I would take it to be around 45% or better on Goldeneye indirectly. Not sure that I could say the same about SSB.

Yeah 30% on FFVII is pretty good all things considered.

It would be a close match IMO and I may take MK64 due to favouritism, but SSB would be the favourite going in.

I don't know a thing about GameSpot. That entire contest is pretty much just a guessing game with all the rallying and low votals. Not much to go on.

Still for a character weaker than Tenpenny it was pretty risky to take him to win.

And the thing to me about Mario Kart...It seems like everyone plays them, but they don't rank highly on people's lists of favorites, for whatever the reason. I just don't think party games and the like do well here. They don't get a "respect" factor a game like SSB would.

(Yes, I know people would argue that SSB is a "party" game as well, but that's neither here nor there!)

SMRPG, but I'm not sure how comfortable I'd be about it.

Heck, Mario Kart 64 vs. Super Metroid: Who you got?

First impression was MK64, but then I stop and have to think about SMK v MK64. Let's say MK64 for now.

SSB vs. Super Metroid: Who you got?

SSB and this is likely the pick I feel the best about out of all 3.

I think the only reason why SSB is more popular here then MK is because of the bad MK game released for Gamecube. People jumped from N64 to the GC with an awesome SSB upgrade, and the MK upgrade just completely bombed, leaving a sour taste in the mouth for a lot of the fanbase.

Exactly. Same thing with the Star Fox franchise. If the franchise kept going up after SF64, all of the games would be really strong here. Instead it bombed and now the awesome SF games are getting left behind.

Well, in my opinion, MK64 was a lot more about straightforward racing than "LOL SO RANDOM BLUE SHELL AND SPECIAL CARTS"

Less emphasis on items being the main thing.

Double Dash allowed you to manage double the items and gave you the option to race against your friends or with them as teams. I've never heard anyone mention Super or 64 having better tracks, but I have heard people complain about DD's forced item distribution (great items for guys losing, defensive items for guys in the lead). And yeah, they did go overboard with that.

And that's the thing. From DD and on, it felt like it wasn't about who was the better racer. It was about who got the Blue Shell and when. Items decided the race.

I mean, yeah, sometimes it would happen in MK64 or SMK when you managed to get a red shell and bypass 1st place right at the end, but you felt like you earned that. Items just became too powerful starting in Double Dash.

MK64 does have better tracks though.

The one track from DD!! that I thought was absolutely amazing was the mini park. The tiny oval with walls surrounding it and 8 laps. That track would just get trashed with shells and bananas, and it would make it a complete crap-shoot on who wound up winning in the end.

Yep, same here. MK64 never got a clean match, and we can't say much about SMK either except it's jjuusstt under Super Metroid...and we still don't have a clue about SM! All that said, I'd take SSB to double SF64 too, and series-wise SSB > MK here pretty easily. Now, MK64's probably the strongest one in the MK-series while SSB is definitely the weakest in the SSB-series plus MK64 was THE multi-player game until Goldeneye hit. Maybe that's enough to win, and it's certainly close enough where the match is worth discussing...but it's just really hard to tell and I'd hate to bet against the SSB-series in a SFF-match against a game from a weaker series.

Bingo. I also enjoyed the battle-modes in MK64 more than any other MK-game's. Nostalgia insists I bring up some fun short-cuts too, like the cave in Koopa Troopa Island and the leap of faith in Rainbow Road. I don't even remember any real short-cuts from MK:DD or MKW.

Smash Bros vs MK64, huh? I'd lean toward Smash, but a MK64 win wouldn't surprise me, either. Could go either way.

And thanks for that one person who reminded me that I should nominate Peggle.

MK64 was awesome for all the reasons already said. I also liked it because the tracks were much longer; many tracks since then (and before) could be done in under 2.5 minutes while in the N64 version you have longer tracks (besides Moo Moo Farm) on average ending with Rainbow Road which can last over 5 minutes IIRC.

man, SMK is the game that actually relied on player skill. MK64 was just as big a step in the party game direction as DD or MKWii, it just hasn't leaped four miles over the line like the later games did.

that said, I still take MK64 to beat SSB. don't have much respect for the original, it just came too late in the console's life.
