This should be a 64 game contest at least, we almost had that many games in the last game contest. 128 games may make the bracket a bit fodderific though.

I made a bracket.

I took the fifty-four that was in BGE2, the two that were Add/Remove'd and are still eligible for this contest, the three from BGE1 that wasn't in BGE2, and added five more (see if you can spot them!). I put them roughly in order of my guess of their strengths, then did a simple S-curve to them...I barely touched it up. Pretty simple, really. If you want an idea of what to expect this contest, take a look below:

FFX/TP/RE4/MGS4 are the big 4 contenders here. I'm going to have to go against Melee and Brawl. Melee died down a lot as shown in the last contest. Brawl was pretty solid last year and died to some SFF but I think a lot of Brawl's votebase has died down. However if I had to pick a few more, I'd probably say Wind Waker, Metroid Prime, and Brawl in that order.

However if I had to pick a few more, I'd probably say Wind Waker, Metroid Prime, and Brawl in that order.

Prime got destroyed by Kingdom Hearts last time. Even if you give all of Paper Mario's votes to Prime, it still loses (GTA: VC is the other one in the poll.)

Meanwhile, with Wind Waker, it was in the same poll as Melee from the start, and Round 1 Melee nearly doubled it (Fire Emblem and Disgaea the other 2 there.)

Neither of those two have any shot unless something really strange was going on in that contest.

Could someone please work SB over in feedback tickets until we're able to confirm the following things:

* 1v1 bracket?
* 64 entrants, or a crazy 128?
* 12 hour matches?
* someone please, please convince him to seed it purely on nominations and not include any further restrictions
(as in "this is the Nintendo 64 division!" or "this is the 2008-2009 division!")


And yes, I realize he said he'd give more details in the coming weeks, but the 64 vs 128 part at least would be extremely helpful to know up front, in terms being able to tell what would actually be worth rallying for.

That's a bad idea. Last contest had a 128 character bracket, with 112 characters automatically in with 16 others decided through the Vote-In polls. If this were a 64 game bracket, it would make sense to have 56 games automatically in, with 8 decided through Vote-In polls.

fun contest. I suggested this to Bacon a while ago, so I like to think I had something to do with its creation! granted I actually had nothing to do with it but hey.

one conclusion can be drawn: if there are 128 games this is going to be absolutely ridiculously unpredictable. I support a 12 hour 128 game contest just because of how silly it could be.

I just looked at the Game of the Decade poll again, and found something interesting. There were 4 Nintendo games in the poll (Metroid Prime, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, and Brawl), and 2 Square games (Final Fantasy X and Chrono Cross). The Nintendo games' percentages add up to 30.9%, while the Square games' percentages add up to 30.25%.

That's surprisingly good for Square- you've got to think TP, WW, and MP combine to add a lot more to Team Nintendo than CC adds to Team Square. And if that poll is accurate, then, FFX looks good against Brawl.

Gah, I did forget that SMG was in that poll. Still, it only got 4.36%, so that only brings Team Nintendo to 35.26%- and now it's got support from 5 games instead of 4. If you give Brawl 100% of the TP, WW, MP, and SMG votes in that poll, and you give FFX 100% of CC's votes, Brawl wins with 53.81%.

Brawl had 2 very different looking matches against MGS4 last contest. It looked like a legit top 3 contender in round 3 and then lost due to LFF in round 4. The truth should be between those, but it's hard to say where. Oh, and for what it's worth, FFX did better on MGS4 than Brawl did on it in its 1v1 match for GOTY.

That's what I like about this contest. Not only are we unsure about the winner, but the gap between "title contender" and "fodder" isn't nearly as great, especially for the really new games. We won't be seeing many 80/20s in this one.

It's long been held Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid have some sort of overlap. I think it's a lot more plausible than Brawl having any overlap with MGS4.

I'd like to take FFX because it would be a welcomed change of pace around here. The game has aged well, and who knows, it seems like this site has drifted even further away from Nintendo in the last 1.5 years. But it's probably a bad idea. I think the stats topic often partakes in some mental gymnastics to fool themselves into thinking that the non-Nintendo entrants have a better chance than they do, and we usually get burned for it. Wii hate or not, Nintendo still rocked some serious face in the last two contests, and I think the biggest obstacle in the way of a Melee/Brawl win is voter backlash because both of them are so strong. If Brawl had never been made, Melee cruises to this title so easily.

Yeah, I think FFX's best chance is to be the only non-Nintendo game left in the last 4/8, with Melee and Brawl looking very good. Might see some backlash then.

I'd like to see Melee win, and will almost definitely pick it to win. I think Brawl's strength is rather nebulous- we never got a good read on it last contest. Of course I've been arguing against both FFX and Brawl for long enough that I almost have to take Melee (or GSC perhaps). I'm planning to go against Zelda games and KH games in close debatable matches this year based on their characters' performances in the last character battle.

I'd take Twilight Princess, while I'd think my chances there are over 50% for being right, I would not feel very confident at all.

I'd love to see TP/RE4/MGS4 get into at least one, preferably two, 1v1 matches against one another in any form.

yeah, I don't trust FFX enough to take it over Smash. the only thing that points the other way is that KH/FFX/SSBM match. game of the decade poll means next to nothing, especially in a 1v1 setting (which isn't confirmed).

The biggest problem I have with taking a non-Smash title to win is that both Melee and Brawl looked so absurdly strong before hitting Zelda, and even in a poll with both a high-tier Zelda and a game that made it's mark on the GameCube (say what you will, but there's a reason ToS is the only game worth anything close to damn, despite Tales of... being Namco's favorite series on the site by a huge margin), Brawl almost beat a game that came within 2400 votes of taking down FFX. And consider that with what Nintendo's revealed, it should be stronger than what it was last time around.

And in TP/MGS4....I don't know. I want to take MGS4 because if freaking TP is stronger than the most likely 2nd strongest non-Nintendo entrant, then Brawl/Melee wins the contest without a real fight from anyone other than themselves.

I would have taken TP over MGS4 after the last contest. After seeing Link, Ganon, and Zelda all flop while Snake was golden again, I'll go with MGS4.

I learned my lesson last contest to not bet against Nintendo. if I have a tossup situation I'll be siding with them.

sorry, FFX! you're the only thing that scares me, to be perfectly honest. one would think MGS4 would be stronger given how the PS3 has grown in the last year plus, but I dunno, I think it's weaker now. I'll take TP.
