So basically what you're saying is that the Driver series would do better in North America than it would in the rest of the world.

So If Tanner gets a day match, he'll win for sure!

I'm not sure how recent it is, but it actually only amounts to about 3 hours of TV a day, so it's not as much as it seems. Kids are only in school half the days of the year, and not at all before kindergarten typically.

Poll of the Day: Brought to you by Yahoo!

http://image.com.com/gamefaqs/images/promo/poll_yahoo.gif

That image is covering the poll question and you can't really see it unless you use Adblock Plus on it or you highlight the question. But it's weird that the ad says "Brought to you by Yahoo!" when I don't see Yahoo hosting the poll question on their site to let site visitors to vote in the poll directly from Yahoo.

Yahoo doesn't have to host the contest matches on their site. I would be okay with them hosting regular polls, but not contest matches.

Can't wait to see how the ad will affect vote totals on the next poll (if the ad is present on the upcoming poll) since the ad is purple and makes it hard to see the poll question.

I think Link would have a very good shot at taking down Mario even on Yahoo. The way I see it, the Nintendo fanbase is going to favor Link overwhelmingly everywhere, so it'll be up to people who aren't Nintendo fans to turn it around for Mario. There's plenty of people who aren't Nintendo fans of course, but among gamers, they're probably not going to split much better than 50/50 for Mario. Among non-gamers Mario probably wins fairly big, but the problem is that most non-gamers are simply not going to vote in such a poll. They know who Mario is, don't know who Link is, and don't really care about either.

Mario would probably be the favorite, but I'll take Link as an upset.

No thanks to Yahoo hosting Gamefaqs polls- that would mean Crono would no longer be elite or anywhere near elite.

The only benefit to Yahoo hosting GameFAQs polls is a huge boost in vote totals, which I mentioned earlier. We are in a time where vote totals on regular polls are sucking. The last time a poll broke 80000 votes was Poll 3993. Poll 3956 is the last poll to break 90000 votes and Poll 3934 is the last one to break 100000 votes. Since Poll 3993, the average vote total for all the polls from 3994 to 4015 is 68579.14. Ideally, 80000 should be around the average vote total per poll and it's way below that based on the last 3 weeks alone.

Unless Yahoo or another high traffic site starts hosting GameFAQs polls (contest matches are excluded from this), vote totals will likely continue to suck badly.
Contest matches wouldn't need to be hosted on other websites because they already get much higher vote totals than regular polls. I expect that once a new generation of consoles are released, the increased site traffic resulting from that will help out vote totals on regular polls. And that won't be happening until at least 2012 or later.

Mario did better against Freeman at Gamespot than Link did, though that probably isn't such a good indication.

And why is Link more popular within the Nintendo fanbase? Doesn't the Mario series (even just limiting it to platformers) have more, uh, "killer quality games"?

IMO the Mario series has 6 games that could are Best Game Ever material (then another if you want to include spin-offs), whereas the Zelda franchise has only 2, and a third one just behind.
red sox 777 | Posted 8/28/2010 12:08:31 PM | message detail
Who knows why? Probably because Link is just a more appealing character than Mario.

Are you more interested in the fluff polls than you are contest stuff or something?

I think it's more traffic slowing down here right now because there haven't been any major releases in the past few months. Wait until Fallout: New Vegas pops up and we should see a boost in poll numbers then.

When is no contest going on at the moment, then I take interest in the regular polls (if there are any interesting ones). But I do care about the contests as well.

I think it's more traffic slowing down here right now because there haven't been any major releases in the past few months. Wait until Fallout: New Vegas pops up and we should see a boost in poll numbers then.

I know vote totals are generally caused by the amount of traffic this site receives each day. Fallout: New Vegas isn't going to be released until October 19th and until then, Metroid: Other M is the only other game release that could be big enough to boost vote totals.

So far I still like her voice (in fact I've been trying to impersonate Samus for the last few weeks in preparation for playing through Zero Mission and Super Metroid before starting up Other M), though it look like she speaks too much, plus the voice may be monotonous but I don't remember it being so. Seeing a section of cutscene where a young Samus is yelling at Adam and somebody else (in Gametrailers' review) gives me nightmares though. I may have to get the game just to see what that's all about.

I probably shouldn't talk about Other M again until I actually get the game.

Final results of said ULTIMATE 2D PLATFORMER SHOWDOWN over on LL.

Which game is better?
Super Mario Bros. 3 41.50% 896
Super Mario World 49.42% 1067
Neither are good games. 9.08% 196
TOTAL VOTES 2159

It was the result I expected based on SMW's big gains from 2004 to 2009, but still thought 3 would be able to keep it closer than that.
