You know, I wish Bacon would've given us one of those "Which game is your current GOTY so far?" polls back in June just to give us a decent idea of how FFXIII will do here. We haven't seen a single poll about the game since its release, not even a "Got FFXIII?" poll, and we got one for Galaxy 2, for cryin' out loud.

CoD4 was still the fourth-strongest game this gen at the time of the last games contest, having some decent strength to it, and it's not like Fallout 3's that weak either. Plus MW2 did fine in the GotD poll. It's not like it was supposed to be the next FF7 or anything, it did solid for what it was.

I do think FF13 won't be as strong here as people expected, and I honestly wouldn't be surprised if it loses GotY here to Mass Effect 2 or Fallout: New Vegas (though I feel it's still the favorite). Still, it's not another FF12, and I think it'll be around the level of FF8 or so. Lightning I'd peg to be a level under the likes of Vincent and Squall, which I guess means she'd be hanging with the likes of Bowser and Ryu, maybe a bit more powerful. Sazh should be a decent midcarder.

I'm still pissed we never got a "Favorite FF13 character?" poll. I'd be curious to see how horrible Hope does (and I'm actually one of his few fans).

Pretty sure FF8 would beat 13 1v1. I like 13 and all, but it's a game that'll take a few years of hate dying down before it gets strong here.

I should also point out that in every year since the GOTY format was roughly formalized (2003) a Western game has never beaten an Eastern game in the final round. The only two times a Western game has won, the finals have been all Western games.

Albeit, Metroid Prime and Vice City would have beaten Kingdom Hearts had a similar format existed that year.

FF13 is the easy GotY favorite, but it's not a lock to win considering it's got a mixed (though mostly positive here) reception and how it's got a bit of competition in Mass Effect 2, Galaxy 2 (hey, Galaxy won GotY, so maybe Mario games overperform in GotY's), and potentially Fallout NV.

FF14 comes out this year for PC, right? If so, I could see it beating either Starcraft 2 and maybe Diablo 3 (is it still coming out this year?) in the PC category or WoW in the MMORPG category (more unlikely). In either case, we'll likely see FF13 and 14 in the first ultimate GotY poll, which will be pretty funny.

Ikon is a horrible user.

I think part of the reason Galaxy did so well back in 2007 was because the game came out less than a month before the GOTY polls. Galaxy 2 was released back in May.

Of course, FFXIII was released back in March, but I think being recent helps a lot.

NSMBWii has no excuses for doing as badly as it did in that GOTY poll, and it still did. Galaxy 2 is more this site's type of Mario game than that one is, but I still don't think it has any chance of beating FFXIII.

I think Zero has tumbled quite a bit from where he was a few years ago. Barret could possibly beat Leon, I'm not sure. It really depends on how long Leon retains his strength as the #1 RE character without any new games. Barret has stronger last potential I think.

Squirtle I'm not sure about, you can never really be sure about Pokemon in this thing. He won't beat Sora if Kingdom Hearts 3 is announced a decent amount of time before the contest hits. Sora will win this 4 pack if he gets KH3 announcement, I think.

Tails didn't look bad last year, but maybe it was just Kratos sucking. I still think Seifer takes this pack.

Axel will slide down in strength indefinitely at this point. Otacon should be fresh enough off MGS4 still (and it helps his father is in Peace Walker). He could make appearances in Rising too. Balthier is eternal fodder and I don't think Ness has anything left to offer.

Morrigan is fodder. It might be lol Arthas, but Arthas can hang with low midcarders and Morrigan is not a low midcarder. Nathan should be a little better as he's continuing to establish himself in the gaming world.

Eh, I can't see Pokemon "dominating" the next time either. The only realistic contender left is Blastoise, and he certainly didn't dominate.

But then again, I don't really know what strong contenders will be available. I guess it depends on who from this NRT field doesn't make the contest.

I don't think we'd even considered a 4-way contest before it was revealed to us. Well, outside of an almost universally panned Tag-Team contest. We'd also never considered a 12-hour contest either. And I think that's a good thing, all the twists have been things we genuinely didn't see coming which to be honest is how I like it.

The Battle Royale was interesting and I'm all for having the 12-hour first few rounds become a staple that never leaves. Sure, the male/female split was bad and 4-ways will always have their detractors but by and large the formats have always been solid and I'm happy for Bacon to keep choosing hw they run.

...man, guess I don't believe in the NRT-winners for close matches this time. Hmmm.


Pokemon doesn't have much left that the board would gladly rally for; Pokemon just had its best year and Squirtle/Blastoise was expected to be the easy favorite, but Barret beat him without much of a problem despite Charizard smashing Cid last year. Bulbasaur, Jigglypuff, and maybe a fan-favorite or two like Gyrados or Kadabra could do well enough to (re)consider, but otherwise that well's going pretty dry and we won't have another Charizard on our hands.

We'll see how the coming year's games look for characters and which ones from the NRT this year do and don't make it...but Red XIII's bound to be a front-runner next time, and if Epona and/or Dark Link don't make it into this contest, I expect either of them to have an even more open field next time (especially with the LoZ:OoT-remake and LoZ:SS out). Who really knows after that?

Man, if Red XIII won next time, people would probably complain something crazy. FFVII character #10? Are you serious?!

But darn it, if FFVII can have 10 strong characters, why not.

Probably the same with Pokemon. If Squirtle gets in, that would be Pokemon character #7.

Sazh and some other FF13-characters can probably do well enough. If Otacon does well here or Psycho Mantis does well at GameSpot, he'll be strong in the next NRT. If Seifer does well, look for Zell next. If Chocobo does well, Goomba's gonna rock faces in the next one...

...then, uh, there are whatever new characters we can hope to see by the next NRT. I suspect Portal 2 will give the board some lovable little orb to get behind, for example, and hopefully we can get more serious contenders than that in a year.

Didn't people say that about Cid being #8? Not many people said it about Berret being #9 though, and he won the whole thing. If Barret flops, that'll put Red XIII in jeopardy...but then people will look at the old FF7-poll and say Barret flopping was expected. Besides, how many games do you get to see ten characters from in these contests? At that point, it'll be a selling point.

Pokemon's future in the NRT likely depends on what Squirtle does next contest. If he ends up being a low midcard or worse a lot of people are going to stop wanting more Pokemon. The only one that may get support would be Jigglypuff and that would be because of the whole, let's finish the SSB roster thing.

Same with Red XIII for FFVII and another FFVIII character.

I have a feeling Board 8 still wouldn't support Seymour if both of those things happened.

But hopefully we can get Rinoa in KHIII (since it's pretty much widely assumed that she sent the letter to Squall at the end of KHII), and Board 8 still won't support her because they hate her, but oh well!

Maybe not, but I think it would be a pretty convincing case. Jecht was pretty good all things considered. Seymour is more prominent in FFX by far, and if he was also in KH3 that'd almost confirm he'd be a pretty solid entrant.
