~*Say What? Common Stats Topic Lingo Defined*~

SFF (Same Fanbase Factor) - Same Fanbase Factor is the theory that, if two contestants share a common fanbase, the weaker of the two options will underperform in a direct matchup. For instance, Link was expected to defeat Ganon with 65% of the vote in 2004, based on their 2003 values. Instead, Link collected near 88% of the vote. This is the best example of SFF we've ever seen. However take some SFF labels with a grain of salt, as many people will slap it onto any match that doesn't make perfect sense.

Extrapolated Standings - The mathematical "strength" of a contestant that's determined based on their performance relative to the rest of the field. This number is typically based on the contest entrant's loss, but adjustments are sometimes made. See above for a watered down explanation for how the stats are calculated.

Noble Nine - Link, Cloud, Solid Snake, Sephiroth, Mario, Crono, Sonic, Samus and Mega Man.

For once I have to agree. The fact that Legend of Zelda is almost doubling Mario is actually a little sickening, moreso than Metroid losing to Smash Bros. and being nearly tripled by Pokemon. The Mario series has 6 games that are all Best Game Ever Material, while the Zelda franchise has like what, 2? With a 3rd just behind?

I mean I liked Twilight Princess more than most people on the board (apparently), but I think it's sickeningly overrated on this site.

Pokemon is winning in Scotland! Oh god, please hold on!

If this happens, I will never play another Zelda game ever again.

At least Nintendo has the good sense not to release the bastard's game over here.

Anyway, I don't see anything coming close to Zelda for a long time. 13 isn't enough to propel Final Fantasy, gamers here aren't huge fans of the recent Mario games despite them being some of the best-reviewed games ever (and just as fun as ever), Metal Gear's hit its stride, and I don't think any amount of rallying or bandwagoning could propel Pokemon on top.

Zelda is simply an unstoppable juggernaut, as is Link. The only way we're taking down Link is if we get Darth Vader in this thing, and even then Link may still win out of pure unadulterated fanboyism.

No, Zelda deserves to be over 50%. In fact, Zelda deserves to be at 100%. There isn't a single legitimate reason to prefer any of these series to Zelda- the only series one can make a valid argument is better than Zelda is Final Fantasy.

But what caused it? You'd think the last 2-3 years were Smash time given Brawl's level of hype. I know Diamond/Pearl sold a lot, but they stunk up the joint in the contest. Outside of a relatively sudden site-wide surge of Pokemon acceptance (I believe this was Turtle's theory), it doesn't make sense.

Exactly. I've been calling this since 2007 (though I never thought it would get this bad.

"Hating" Pokemon to the point of anti-voting is something that you'd expect 14-15 year olds to do, at the age where kids are trying their hardest to act more "mature". Once those kids hit 19-20, retro things from their childhood became awesome again. 2002-2006 was just a period where the majority of the site was in that awkward rebellious phase (and I would argue 2006 is about when it started turning around)

Mario/Cloud - Barring a big announcement for the FF7 crew, I would take Mario over Cloud next contest hands down
Samus/Sephiroth - Ditto for this match
Pikachu/Fox - Pikachu easily. At least 60-40
Bowser/Yoshi - Give me Yoshi here. Galaxy 2 was his first real role in a main Mario game since.... World? That doesn't seem right....
Sora/Aerith - Ugh, give me Sora in a squeaker barring KH3 coming, in which case Sora with 58% or so.
Mario/Sephiroth - Mario easily
Knuckles/Yuna - Yuna, unless you think Cecil would give Yuna a run for her money
Luigi/Yoshi - I'm going to go with Luigi. He's looked damn good the last couple of contests
Frog/Liquid Snake - Frog barring Metal Gear Solid 5
Frog/Master Chief - Frog barring a Halo game actually starring the Chief
Knuckles/Kefka - Kefka, there's no way Kefka doesn't pummel Cecil
Riku/Frog - Frog barring KH3
Auron/Big Boss - Specifically, how close would Big Boss get this time? - Auron 60-40. I still think Big Boss was riding MGS4 and his side games to those impressive showings
Auron/Ganondorf - Auron, he's pretty clearly the number 3 non-NNer behind Vinny/Squall (Tifa is arguable)
Bowser/Ryu - Ryu, he looked damn good last year, and the continued success of SF4 can only help him
Master Chief/DK - MC, he hasn't fallen THAT far yet
Crono/Vincent - Crono in a squeaker. I still think Link was hurting him in those 4 way matches
Vincent/Squall - Squall, he's looked better than Vincent every year since their match in 2005.
Sonic/Mega Man - Mega Man with 55%, unless Sonic 4 manages to be decent and sell well (LOL)
Mega Man/Crono - Mega Man with about 53%, he's clearly above Cronic at this point
Ocelot/Pac-Man - I took Pac-Man the first time, and I'll take him again
Mario/Snake - Mario, Snake has already peaked. He has nowhere to go but down now.
Peach/Jill - Hmmmm, give me Jill in a squeaker
Jill/Hayabusa - Hayabusa with about 52%
Yoshi/Dante - Dante, for some reason I have a feeling that the upper non-NN tier is completely filled with Capcom and Square characters these days, barring possibly Luigi
Kratos/Ryu - Assuming SF Ryu, Ryu by far. Assuming Hayabusa Ryu, give me Kratos
Sonic/Vincent - Vincent in a close, but not contested match
Master Chief/Sub-Zero - Sub Zero. Chief looked like ass last year

Never finished doing this, so here's my predictions:

Mario/Cloud - Cloud wins 56-44.
Samus/Sephiroth - Samus, 50-50.
Pikachu/Fox - Pikachu 55-45.
Bowser/Yoshi - Bowser 56-44 like before, but I have no clue what happens here.
Sora/Aerith - ......Aeris, 50-50. She got 43% on Auron, while Sora looked really bad last contest. Counting on Aeris still getting some (r)SFF here.
Mario/Sephiroth - Sephiroth 52-48
Knuckles/Yuna - .....Knuckles, 51-49. This may seem strange- my reasoning is that Cloud/Sonic would go about the same as 2003 (Cloud probably gets a little less, actually), so Knuckles can still win this rematch.
Luigi/Yoshi - Yoshi, 54-46, just because that happened last time.
Frog/Liquid Snake - Liquid Snake, 55-45. MGS and CT have come a long way since 2004- that was CT's arguably best year, and MGS's worst.
Frog/Master Chief - Frog, 50-50, aw yeah.

Between those and BGE2 (I think we saw D2 look a little better than the other two Blizzard-titles), I'm taking Diablo. I could see them all hurting each other and allow CoD the win though. I don't know if it would necessarily even beat the Warcraft-series, my guess for the bottom of those three...but with the three together, CoD could reign supreme. Then again, Bond's another big FPS-series.

That seems pretty extreme in my opinion. The only way I'm seeing that happening would be if Samus really is stronger than Mario indirectly. Cloud almost reached 53-47 on Samus in a night match, though Cloud could hit 54 in a 24 hour match. In a 24 hour match, I'll take Cloud to win 53-47 over Mario.

True, I was thinking more of before Starcraft 2. It'll boost Starcraft a lot, though I don't think it would be an easy win yet considering it's associated with Activision now and it has its controversies like being three games and the names-on-forums issue before it was retracted. Plus, RTSs just aren't that popular here; Diablo's an action-RPG and more of an American favorite than Starcraft, so...I dunno, it'd be fun.

Personally I'd say, in regards to FF7 vs. Nintendo Acrobats:

Cloud with 51% on Mario
Mario with 54% on Sephiroth
Samus with 52% on Sephiroth

I think I've already said enough about how I refuse to accept Samus > Mario indirectly, and Super Mario Galaxy 2 being so awesome basically cements it.

Too bad for whatever terrible reason GameFAQs doesn't care about SMG 1 and 2.

@charmander6000: Too bad indeed. Oh well, what do I care about this site's tastes? Nowadays anything MGS, LoZ, SSB, FF, or KH is guaranteed to be an elite, while anything else has a much lower chance just out of being something else. It's silly.
