RE got a doubling or thereabouts on SF in favorite Capcom series polls twice, so it's probable that picture in the Series Contest had a huge effect.

I wouldn't say "huge," per se. Noticeable, sure. I think SF would still manage 43-45%~ with a fair picture.

But RE beat Mega Man by a decent margin in those polls and still did worse against FF head-to-head.

I think Sonic has a bigger "respect" factor than Mario Kart does, honestly. I think a lot of people just felt "weird" about voting Mario Kart over Mega Man, even though they might have actually liked Mario Kart more just because, well, it's Mega Man and Mario Kart is "just" a racing game.

I mean, I know I did, and I love Mario Kart and I merely like Mega Man. So that's why I'd be hesitant to say Mario Kart would beat Sonic.

And we don't get another one until 2007. I figure the shift from MM > RE to RE > MM happened with RE4, which happened pre-Games Contest.

FF may have gotten a bit of SFF against RE (and, quite probably on all of the series it faced yesterday).

Well, the Series Contest probably had a ridiculous amount of weirdness, especially when it came to matches involving Mario, Zelda, and FF.

I dunno about that. Going in I expected Zelda and FF to kill everything really badly, much worse than OOT and FFVII kill things, and SMB to kill stuff too to a somewhat lesser but still big extent. I figured the number of strong games in those series would compound their strength.

Well, it was only a 32 entrant contest, and they each had their own division, so really, the only "clean" division would've been Metal Gear's division because there were no powerhouses in it.

Man, vote totals on regular polls have been sucking lately because there it has been a while since the last contest ended. I think the contests help boost vote totals on regular polls, but only for a short period of time after the contest ends. I went through all the regular polls since the contest and made up some quick stats.

First month of polls since the contest ended (30 poll stretch, Poll 3857-3886)

Average Vote Totals per poll - 86864.10
Number of polls above 100000 votes - 5

The 110 poll stretch from Poll 3887-3996

Average Vote Totals per poll - 75928.49

I've noticed lately that if you compare the votals of current polls to the first time they were run, almost all of have noticeably fewer votes.

Hahaha, Pokemon led Zelda for a short period of time in the first minute. By the end of the first minute, Zelda had the lead back and is up in first place now.

Nice job Pokemon. I wonder how much stronger Pokemon will be once BW comes out.

Not very, in the same way that I doubt SMG2 made any difference to SMB or Skyward Sword is going to make a difference to Zelda. They're all series' that are strong off a lot of strong games and lots of nostalgia. I don't think any new game is going to noticably make a difference, unless it hits the level of the top 2.

Smash is still holding up to Mario pretty well- over 37% right now, just 1% lower than what it got in the Series Contest, though it'll probably go down overnight.

Thinking Zelda's going to make a run at the doubling on Mario.....sweet.

Also, Metroid's at 42% on Smash right now, suggesting Metroid/Sonic would be close. Er.....considering how far Sonic has fallen since 2006, Metroid should be the favorite, especially as Zelda/Mario are probably hurting it worse than Smash.

You really shouldn't take much from this poll. Zelda is SFF smashing everything into the dust, which means Pokemon will reap the benefits thanks to its SFF-resilience.

Brawl > RBY > SM64, though I'm always biased toward Smash games being very strong on this site.

It's got a pretty big lead in Europe. Mario's struggling to beat Metroid in Europe.

The percentages will change quite a bit for Europe over the next few hours. Europe did only have 160 votes at the end of the first hour in the continent poll and ended up finishing at 13836 votes by the end of the poll.

RBY could reasonably beat SM64, Charizard beat Bowser before getting 46% on Mario, Missingno beat Yoshi, and BW is more hyped than SMG2 was. The Pokemon-fanbase has a pretty good record against Mario this past year.
