Just calculated it:

If you assume that Cecil Vs. Knuckles is extended 12 hours and if you assume that the final votals are 110,000 Cecil would need 54% of the remaining vote just to break even.

People think Sonic characters have a great ASV due to having a great morning vote, but that's wrong. It's Europe (UK) that gives Sonic characters such a boost in the morning.

I don't see Cecil winning.

Knuckles's 4-way match trend charts say otherwise.

Time | Knuckles | Rikku | Vaan | Yoshi | Demographic
EBV | 26.81% | 22.43% | 7.54% | 43.22% | (0:00-0:05)
PHV | 27.39% | 26.00% | 7.78% | 38.83% | (0:00-1:00)
FNV | 26.47% | 28.32% | 8.88% | 35.72% | (1:00-6:00)
BSV | 26.84% | 27.74% | 9.95% | 35.47% | (6:00-9:00)
DSV | 28.14% | 25.57% | 9.66% | 36.63% | (9:00-14:30)
ASV | 28.65% | 27.76% | 10.17% | 33.42% | (14:30-22:00)
SNV | 28.57% | 29.50% | 10.25% | 31.68% | (22:00-24:00)

Quite a jump from morning to afternoon there.

Time | Fei | Knuckles | Mario | Zelda | Demographic
EBV | 12.77% | 20.99% | 40.33% | 25.90% | (0:00-0:05)
PHV | 14.04% | 20.08% | 39.73% | 26.16% | (0:00-1:00)
FNV | 16.91% | 20.27% | 37.77% | 25.05% | (1:00-6:00)
BSV | 12.96% | 19.94% | 42.06% | 25.05% | (6:00-9:00)
DSV | 14.65% | 20.21% | 40.15% | 24.99% | (9:00-14:30)
ASV | 12.40% | 22.09% | 41.75% | 23.75% | (14:30-22:00)
SNV | 15.76% | 21.03% | 39.82% | 23.39% | (22:00-24:00)

Heck, the morning vote was Knux's worst timeframe here.

Missingno loses a 24-hour match worse than he loses a day match or night match (and he loses both of those, probably). The 12-hour format is not kind to FFVII characters, who do better in a longer match no matter when it starts. 24-hour match > night match > day match for FFVII characters.

I think you can make an argument for Missingno in a day match in that 3 AM - noon is a really bad time of day for rallying people in North America, which potentially knocks off a few thousand rallied votes. Not too likely to make up a 5000 difference though.

Looking at the trends for the Knuckles/Yoshi/Rikku/Vaan match, I'm 95% sure that must have been a weekend or summer match.

2nd one is surprising though, although Mario characters also do very well in the morning compared to the ASV.

So what do people expect from Missingno in the next contest? There's no way it's not coming back next contest after the run it had this past year and the excitement it caused from the vote-ins to Sephiroth. Is it legit enough to beat Crono again? I like to think the Yoshi-match was its most honest match, but between the Nintendo-overlap and seeing how it did against Crono and Sephiroth, it's hard to say that with much confidence...or at least much counter-evidence to those examples.

More like it was FFVII Euro dominance as usual.

Europe's dominance in this trend chart can certainly show why:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/8-gamefaqs-contests/55224637/610640034

Granted, the continent poll happened on a weekend though, so no ASV. Europe cuts almost 900 votes off North America's lead overnight and didn't lose an update to North America for almost 2 1/2 hours. And the last 6 hours of that poll, since I never posted them:

Time | Africa | Asia | Oceania | Europe | North/South America
19:00 | 0.41% | 1.46% | 1.49% | 12.15% | 79.62% | 4.87%
20:00 | 0.14% | 1.76% | 2.33% | 8.73% | 82.15% | 4.89%
21:00 | 0.46% | 2.07% | 2.84% | 6.56% | 83.23% | 4.84%
22:00 | 0.49% | 2.38% | 2.76% | 4.27% | 85.31% | 4.79%
23:00 | 0.40% | 3.17% | 3.20% | 2.19% | 86.33% | 4.71%
24:00 | 0.33% | 3.31% | 3.72% | 2.13% | 86.42% | 4.09%

In a Missingno/Crono rematch, I'd back Missingno again. He'll probably drop, but I don't think it'll be a significant drop like L-Block, and if he does fall significantly, I'd be quicker to blame a Pokemon drop than it being a joke character. Plus, Crono ain't getting any younger.

All polls up to 7/19/2010 have been inputted into the database. Most of them are re-runs of earlier polls, although I couldn't figure out what will be run on 7/9/2010 and 7/11/2010. Probably original poll ideas.

But on 7/10/2010, there will be a "Which one of the original eight Street Fighter II characters was your favorite?" poll.

What's the opinion on joke characters? Do you think they should be eliminated? (this may have been asked recently, but I'm behind on things) It's really unfortunate that we cannot petition for anything pertaining to GameFAQs contests anymore.

I think they ought to. It was hilarious seeing MissingNo. take out Crono, but I'm getting supersaturated with joke character fun now. If we knew they'd always lose that would be one thing. But continual repeats of joke characters taking out contest forces just doesn't seem right. I think they should be banned altogether; and, if not all, ban the formidable ones like MissingNo, L-Block, Mudkip, and Sandbag.

I would expect MissingNo to beat Crono again, though I wouldn't be confident. I didn't analyze the matches or x-stats really, but didn't MissingNo gain some pretty good momentum? At least, when comparing Yoshi's performance to Sephiroth's. If so, I would expect MissingNo to have a strength somewhere between what it did on Yoshi and what it did on Sephiroth. (but wouldn't as easily gain momentum). Kinda Like L-Block after its championship.

If you showed one of the GameFreak developers or one of the Nintendo programmers what MissingNo. did in the past contest, I wonder what their reaction would be...=p

Joke characters seem to naturally lose the favor of the voters after a contest or two. L-Block and Weighted Companion Cube are defintely much weaker than they used to be. Mudkip and Sandbag aren't that strong. Missingno. and new joke characters are the only ones that may have a lot of strength. I don't think Missingno. will ever be as strong as it was in the 2k10 contest. If Missingno. can still beat Crono, it'll only because Crono also fell a lot.

I really wish we could see Geolocation stats for really old polls. Halo vs Starcraft in Asia would be utter hilarity, perhaps a 90%+ blowout.

The 2007 L-Block matches would be amusing to look at Geolocation results for. Being able to apply Geolocation onto polls older than the first match of the 2008 character battle would simply involve having a record of every IP address associated with every vote submitted in the polls prior to the 2008 character battle. If this data is stored on backups, it should be enough to apply this to older polls.

Well, you know, many schools in states I've lived don't start until after Labor Day, so it would be summer. I remember in MA/NH we'd start after Labor Day about half the time and before about half the time.

What we need is for a poll like this to be re-run again:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=613

There would be a bit of variation across each state, and even between different countries too.

Looks like Chun Li is going to reverse the loss she suffered to Ken in this poll:

If there are any real trends in this poll, Ken needs to rely on them to finish in second place. And there probably won't be any trends here (SFF match).

I doubt any SF Alpha character would do too well outside of Akuma (he's Alpha, right?)...and that's just in context to the original SF-cast. SB definitely needs to do that poll though, because we need some new SF-polls if we're gonna have so many SF-polls.

So, Wikipedia says Gamefaqs was sold for $2.2 million back in 2003. Does anyone know if that is correct and/or whether there were other conditions in the sale (such as only selling 51% of the business, and stuff like that)? $2.2 million seems really really low for a site that had as much traffic as this one did back then (100k votes/day were very common in that year's contest).

Well Gamefaqs is currently around 500 on Alexa, though that's been down in the past few years- used to be top 300 (and yeah, could have been top 200 in 2003).

Either way, $2.2 million seems like a great bargain for CNET, especially as the site was still growing in 2003, and anything less than that even moreso.
