Unless the Koreans cheat for it again.

I really wish we could see Geolocation stats for really old polls. Halo vs Starcraft in Asia would be utter hilarity, perhaps a 90%+ blowout.

But yeah, Starcraft should do better in Europe, and Metroid should do better later on since it's pretty big in NA. Who knows if Reach can make a comeback against Kingdom freaking Hearts, though.

And even if Halo's lost a step, it's still much better here than it was before Halo 3. Need I remind you of all the embarrassing things Master Chief has done before he downed some Game Fuel? Not to mention nobody gave a **** about ODST anyway since the only notable thing about it was it having all DLC included for Halo 3's multiplayer. That's certainly the only reason I bothered getting it.

Starcraft is actually really bad in Europe- it's only at 13% in this poll there, and the falloff from the first 3 hours to the deep night against FFVIII was incredible. A lot of it was FFVIII, yeah, but you don't go from 50/50 to getting doubled for a couple hours like that without being really bad in Europe yourself. And it fits well with Starcraft's old matches too- its best time was always the second night vote, 9 PM to 3 AM, when Europe is asleep. Now, SC looked okay with the first night vote (3 AM - 6 AM) back then, but it did not dominate it (against WW and SSBM it was barely staying ahead), and it was up against 4 games who are just horrible with the deep night: Halo, Kingdom Hearts, Wind Waker, and SSBM.

I just checked and Metroid is winning in Europe and South America, while KH is winning in Asia and Oceania.

StarCraft (and probably Blizzard as a whole, though WoW may be an exception) doesn't seem to have all that much worldwide appeal.
charmander6000 | Posted 6/30/2010 7:23:51 AM | message detail
Yeah I use to think that Starcraft was loved in Europe before geolocation came out, but looking at old polls it seems that the game lost the night vote to Kingdom Hearts. The places that really like it are Asia, Oceania and Canada.

For what its worth, Starcraft 2 has actually gained about 40 votes since 3 PM EST. Doubt we'll see much in the form of trends on a summer day, though.

I track trends for polls that are expected to have extreme trend changes (as in that soda poll), because I like seeing extreme trend changes. I also track trends for polls related to contests.

Only reason I didn't bother with tracking trends for yesterday's poll was for the very high number of options (12 options) in the poll.

Anyways, looks like we could be dealing with another series of "Got Console?" polls again this year.

Now that we have geolocation, we need a Gamefaqs presidential election poll in 2012. Bush actually won the popular vote here in 2000......although Nader probably played spoiler in a big way here, getting over 12% of the votes (27% for both Bush and Gore, with Bush narrowly ahead).

Was Nader's platform too similar to Gore's or something?

I guess its kind of like the Liberals, NDP, Bloq (in Quebec) and Green splitting the vote for the left while the Conservatives have the right to themselves. Too bad the Canadian Alliance and Progressive Conservatives merged.

Nader was closer to Gore than Bush (farther left in a lot of areas, really), yes, though I think a significant minority of his voters would have voted for Bush. He only got like 1% or something nationally and in Florida, but Bush only won by 537 votes in Florida, so Nader may have swung that election. He was apparently a lot more popular on Gamefaqs, though!

Totally disagree. Best time would be September/October/November or January/February/March (first months for brackets, of course). It's when the site is busiest. I'm as big a traditionalist as anyone, but doing it in the summer because that's how it used to be makes no sense. It's like saying you should only have sex in the summer.

I agree with Ulti for once, but for a different reason. A lot of the best matches are the ones with the big ASV comebacks, but we don't get them during the summer matches. The trends are always pretty stable in weekend/summer matches compared to school days, so those matches are more entertaining overall for me to watch.

Plus, we already had a contest this year. Its really too soon. I hope we have a contest in the fall though.

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=3711

On the above link, take note of this:

See other results for this poll: 6/30/09 7/3/10

It's listing a link to a poll that isn't even valid. This suggests that all of the "Got Console?" polls have been inputted into the database already, meaning that Bacon has all of the polls set up for now. I took advantage of that to figure out the tentative schedule for the "Got Console?" polls. So we have this:

7/3/2010 - Got PlayStation 3?
7/4/2010 - Got Wii?
7/5/2010 - Got Xbox 360?
7/6/2010 - Got a gaming-quality PC?
7/7/2010 - Got iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad?

And I think that's all there will be this time around.

Summer is definetly the busiest time, or at least it draws in more people to the contests. Both 2004 and 2005 show a drop off in votals once September hit, at least in regards to how well the polls should be doing. Hell, you could make an argument that the last couple of weeks in August do as well.

Plus, match trends are way more unpredictable in a non school-day match.

Eh, trends are probably more interesting on school days- way more variation, whereas there's not much room for comebacks with weekend or summer trends. Actually, the most fun time format we've had is probably a 3 AM start time during the school year. We actually have a second night vote with that format. The problem is that staying up for the start of the match becomes almost impossible for those on the East Coast, so I probably wouldn't want to switch back to that, but as far as the quality of the matches themselves go, that's probably the best we've seen yet.

I would say as a general rule though, that matches where the Day Vote character wins are better to be held on school days, while matches where the non Day Vote character wins are better to be held on non-school days.

For example, DK Vs. Vercetti probably would have been less entertaining on a school day, as Vercetti probably never loses his lead. On the other hand, Snake Vs. Bowser probably would have been more entertaining on a weekend, as Bowser might have come closer to the lead, and would have threatened Snake for a much longer period of time.

Nah, Snake vs. Bowser was made exciting by the ASV. 1500 votes cut off a 2200 lead is much better than a match where Bowser erases a few hundred votes in the morning to tie it up, they stall in the early afternoon, and by evening Snake is pulling away again for an easy win. I agree with your general principle though.

I'm also convinced that pushing forward the start time is more than anything else what killed CT's day vote. Push the time back 3 hours, and a huge number of voters in CT's best time no longer vote there, and instead spread their votes throughout the rest of the day. Even moving to 1 AM would probably help substantially (probably wipes out the majority of East Coast early votes and shifts them to the rest of the day). That's why CT's day vote tanked in 2006- the first year we opened polls at midnight Eastern.

I prefer summer because I have less going on during it (i.e. less TV to watch), but I'm fine participating anytime.

Still wondering how Bacon's going to handle the next contest. Starting the year with a character contest kinda throws a wrench in things, after all.

Which he should, by the way. Best format ever.

On a side note, I thought that most people said that they didn't want a Wii.

Obviously Twilight Princess + Brawl + Skyward Sword are the reasons. Too bad Other M doesn't seem to have much hype on this site (it's my most anticipated game currently, though that's mostly because I don't own any non-Nintendo console yet and getting extremely new PC games to run is going to be problematic).
charmander6000 | Posted 7/4/2010 8:35:12 AM | message detail
Considering twice as many people want a PS3 than a Wii, that may be true, though we have to remember that more people already own a Wii.

Those Wii owners are likely using the console as a Zelda + Smash machine, completely not caring about the system's true best games. Sad but unfortunately true.

I haven't seen any talking about it, but yes looks like this summer has nothing much for GameFAQs users. The #1 anticipated game is a PC-exclusive RTS, the #3 is a PSP game (yeah it's KH, but still), and the #4 is a Halo game. When those three are close together and taking up three of the top four spots (plus that PC-exclusives, PSP-esclusives, and Halo games haven't exactly been associated with majo strength in the past), you know they are weak.

Final "Yes" percentage is 56.40%. PS3 has now taken the lead by 0.1 percentage points. A large part of the cause was the PS3 percentage boosting since the previous poll but the 360 would have kept the lead if it didn't drop by 1.31 percentage points. I think this is probably the first time a current gen console has gone down in percentage.

With the 360's biggest-by-far exclusive series no longer mattering much, that's not too surprising...but it's still weird to see a console lose ground. I feel like we've seen it happen once before though, but even then I don't think it was anything big like 1.31%.
