XD, 31.91% update for Europe. Looks like my prediction of Europe getting 25-35% updates this hour will come true. At the same time, North America only had a 54.09% update and only a 57 vote gain on Europe.

Europe just ended the last hour by coming within just 2 votes of tieing with North America on an update. I have a feeling that this hour may be the best chance for Europe to win an update.

Well, game over North America. You were outmuscled by Europe finally. When Europe went for its first cut, it went in for the kill. Europe with a 39 vote cut on North America. 49.59% update for Europe, while North America only had a 33.74% update.

Tonight's POTD is amusing. This is our chance to see which continents/states are the biggest joke voters. =P

I'd post stats, but we might as well wait until the end. I'll just say that 0.78% of Arizona voters so far put "South America", while the rest put "North America". Come on guys, don't you known the southern US is NOT South America?!

Some of those votes could be from people vacationing in a different continent from their home.

Though why South Americans would vacation in freaking Arizona of all places, between the controversy there and how incredibly ****ing hot it must be, is a mystery to me.

I just went through each US state to see who were the biggest jokers, the following states answered less than 97.5% North America.

Alaska - 97.44%
California - 97.03%
Hawaii - 84.17%
Virginia - 97.34%
Washington - 97.21%

I was surprised that California was so low, I thought their large population would prevent something like this. Also every single non-North America voter for Alaska went to Africa. Hawaii was a bit screwed by the wording since even though they are part of the US, the islands could be closer to Asia or Oceania in the eyes of the voters.

Also Wyoming currently have 100% in North America, clearly they mean buisness.

Poll results after the first 12 hours:

Africa 0.51% 242
Asia 5.17% 2474
Australia/Oceania 4.56% 2181
Europe 19.08% 9125
North America 68.17% 32603
South America 2.51% 1202
TOTAL VOTES 47827

Those percentages are pretty close (other than Africa) to the distribution of votes that you would have seen in the night matches from the last contest.

Hawaii was a bit screwed by the wording since even though they are part of the US, the islands could be closer to Asia or Oceania in the eyes of the voters.

I think that is the problem with Hawaii. Geographically, it's part of Oceania but most voters are going with North America on the grounds that it's part of a North American country. Asia is doing pretty good in Hawaii, probably as a result of the state's high Asian population.

Trend chart for the first 12 hours so far:

Time | Africa | Asia | Oceania | Europe | North/South America
1:00 | 0.44% | 3.51% | 4.10% | 1.98% | 87.70% | 2.27%
2:00 | 0.34% | 4.80% | 4.16% | 3.24% | 84.95% | 2.51%
3:00 | 0.55% | 5.50% | 6.60% | 8.48% | 76.82% | 2.04%
4:00 | 0.58% | 7.08% | 7.03% | 18.84% | 65.02% | 1.44%
5:00 | 0.57% | 6.90% | 8.08% | 34.65% | 48.56% | 1.24%
6:00 | 0.54% | 8.55% | 6.48% | 47.87% | 35.56% | 1.00%
7:00 | 0.98% | 7.75% | 7.20% | 49.30% | 33.44% | 1.33%
8:00 | 0.72% | 6.96% | 5.71% | 43.70% | 40.41% | 2.50%
9:00 | 0.62% | 5.52% | 3.91% | 32.35% | 54.84% | 2.76%
10:00 | 0.38% | 4.61% | 2.66% | 23.02% | 65.62% | 3.71%
11:00 | 0.39% | 3.64% | 1.38% | 15.13% | 75.39% | 4.08%
12:00 | 0.41% | 2.77% | 1.19% | 12.92% | 78.62% | 4.10%

The end of the Night Vote and early Morning Vote was controlled by Europe. I thought Europe would have what it takes to win some updates against North America, but I never would have expected it to win an entire hour, much less win 3 whole hours against North America. North America got the lead up to 16645 before Europe got its first cut. Once Europe got its first cut at 5:06 AM, it was getting multiple consecutive cuts and didn't lose an update to North America until 7:27 AM. Europe's last cut of the poll came at 7:52 AM.

Hawaii is warm all year round, so it wouldn't really matter what time of the year you visit Hawaii. I'd expect the winter months to have more tourist activity, especially from people from the mainland US or Alaska who are trying to get away from the cold weather for a little while.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that Europe managed to cut the lead from 16645 all the way down to 15774. Couldn't quite cut 1000 votes off that lead. I can't think of any other cases where one option was capable of cutting into a lead larger than the 16645 in today's poll.

I know Solid Snake was able to cut into L-Block's 13000+ vote lead twice near the end of the semifinal match in 2007, although that match had much higher vote totals than this poll.

Only 6 hours left in this poll and Europe has shown no signs of dropping off after being somewhat steady for the past few hours. I imagine Europe will drop off really hard sometime within the next 2 hours as many Europeans go to sleep and European voting grinds to an almost complete halt near the end of the poll. Europe is trying so hard to force in another percentage increase since the 9:42 AM update when it reached its all time high of 20.19%, but it may not be able to pull it off in time.

For the next poll that will arrive soon, I'm expecting this poll to be re-run:

Since that poll was ran on the day after the continent poll was run last year.

Poll updates for yesterday's poll:

http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=tzDbbCvKgxpPAshUwKqF7pA

Also, the completed trend charts can be found there.

The "Extra Info" sheet just includes 2 pieces of information that I didn't include in the sheet with the actual poll updates. They are - each option's vote intake per update and the percentage of the incoming votes received by each option on every update.

The Night Vote and early Morning Vote was the most powerful time period for Europe overall, where it was drawing in over 50% of the votes on some updates. North America sucked during this time, getting less than 30% of the votes on some updates.

@Ulti: You may be disappointed to here that the Manta Ray sections return in the sequel. Well, not really Manta Ray, but, uh, you'll see.

But I don't think either Mario Galaxy game needs to be compatible with a GameCube controller at all. Then again I often feel better using a Wii-mote than I do using a regular controller.

Unfortunately, IE has rebounded since its horrible start. Still nice to see Chrome leeching IE a nice chunk, though. Firefox is the same as ever.

I'd probably switch to Chrome if the ChromeFAQs extension got more of the GameFOX features! Oh, and also its own version of Scrollbar Anywhere.

Do bear in mind that the wording of the poll is "Which web browser do you most often use?" It's possible that someone could vote for a different browser than they are using and be honest. For example, I could vote Firefox on my iPhone using Safari and be truthful because I normally use FF on my desktop computer.

Yeah, the Manta Ray in Galaxy 1 was better, but you eventually get used to both of them after you die enough times.

Although part of me thinks that every game (especially now that Sony and Microsoft are coming out with their own motion controllers) should have the option to be played with a regular controller or with motion controls.

Neither Manta Ray nor Fluzzard sections are really that bad. Though I guess it helped that I had 15+ lives when I was doing the Manta Ray section on my last playthrough.

For what it's worth I can't imagine doing either one without motion controls. Or, at the very least, it would feel like something I've done before.

This, 100% (except if its some glorified tech demo like Wii Sports or Kinectanimals). Its limiting a players enjoyment too much to force them to only be able to play with motion controls, because lets face ; not everyone enjoys motion controls.

Because playing a game by waving your arms around like a fool isn't fun. Most importantly though, playing with an actual controller gives you a lot more precise control over the game. Nothing pisses me off more then trying to play an action game and the damn control wont register my movements.

I don't know.

The kids, are being bought Wiis because it's the most child-friendly. They're experiencing motion control, and they're growing up with it. Now we have the PS3 and 360 both bringing out motion control. I think it might be the future, rightly or wrongly.

From what I've heard the Wii version has support for the GameCube controller (but most critics and gamers say the game works better with remote + nunchuk controls).

There will always be support for the GameCube controller in certain games where the method is tried and true (Smash Bros., Mario Kart), and we don't need it in others.

This generation's the biggest stepping stone to the idea of playing games in virtual reality that we've ever had, and that was what we as gaming kids often dreamed of when we grew up...now kids like we were are making video games with the best technology to date. Between that and the push for interactivity in our technology today, motion controls aren't going anywhere except closer to the idea of virtual reality. I'm certain it will continue to be improved and refined over the years and especially whenever the next systems comes out; it sucks for the people who aren't happy with motion controls right now, but it's not supposed to be the best it can ever be at this point either. The next generation won't be a battle over graphics so much as it is about improving the connections with games.

I still remember a big clash with 2D-fans and 3D-fans about whether or not the industry should continue pushing 3D-experiences; there hadn't been many great games yet at that time we already had over a decade of great 2D-experiences, so why fix an unbroken wheel? I'm glad the industry went the 3D-direction though; (some) 2D-games are still made for the gamers who want them and 3D-games got a lot better over time. I feel like there's something similar here. Rarely have we ever gone without traditional controllers, and now we're facing a time when the entire industry's embracing new ways to play. It'll take a continued push from the industry (certainly happening) and a few great games on each system embracing them (Wii's had some for awhile), but it's going to happen despite resistance.

Haters better hope either they get used to gaming standing up or developers look out for their interests of sitting while playing. I hope for the latter despite being cool with motion controls (though I still vastly prefer controllers at this point)...but it's going to continue this direction for a long long time. Microsoft and Sony tried to hate on the idea until they saw they couldn't go without it...so competition's gonna make it a lot better in the future.

Hang tight, dismayed gamers.

Still much better than Halo 1 levels. Master Chief vs Felix, anyone?

Actually voted for Reach myself. Beta was a blast.

You're comparing those games to Metroid: Other M and Starcraft II?

Heck I would take half of these games over Heavenly Sword

Halo 3 was huge all over here and Master Chief was an absolute beast that year because of it. there's really no debating how much bigger Halo was in 2007 than in 2010.

I just think it's funny that even when there's a legit game Halo fans are excited about, GameFAQs doesn't care. once COD4 came out we dropped Halo and never looked back.

I was kinda surprised to see StarCraft II winning. Further confirmation that this site doesn't care much for the Wii or PSP.

Though if I would've probably voted for SCII if it weren't for newer computer games being erratic to run. Meanwhile the recent gameplay footage of Other M looked sick and has me hooked.
