What's that? Yes, of course hierarchies was the single worst argument of 2009. Uh......how about I change my argument to Link is awesome.

Well hierarchies do exist it's just that people were using it wrong.

Yeah, I'd be really surprised (and dismayed) if Gamespot was different enough for Mario to beat Link. The Nintendo fanbase just favors Link, and among people who started gaming on the N64 or later it's a massacre.

Yep, what red said. LoZ:OoT killed SM64 here, arguably our #4 game...and SMS doesn't get close to the respect that LoZ:WW gets (and that's one of LoZ's general low-marks of the series). SMG1/2 and NSMBW are making Mario the more important series this generation for the first time since SNES or maybe even NES, but even still it's not showing up here or at that CrispyGamer bracket and it's hard to say how much anywhere else on the internet...plus when the trailer for the new LoZ-game comes out at E3 and people start crying again, Mario owning this generation will be up in question again.

Plus I don't know if any other major website's going to respect the old-school games like GameFAQs does. I feel like we're probably a younger community, but also a more hardcore community. Even if GameSpot loves the old-school much more than us, LoZ and LoZ:LttP can compete with or beat SMB1, SMB3, and SMW.

Mario deserves better. I love Link too, but dammit, it's friggin' Mario !!

I'd also be really surprised if Mario could beat Link on any big gaming site. The Nintendo fanbase went through a massive shift with Ocarina of Time, and nothing since has suggested a shift back in Mario's favor. Mario is unquestionably the biggest traditional Nintendo series this gen with Galaxy 1/2 and NSMBWii, yet Twilight Princess would still smoke all those games. Link's big games are just a much bigger deal, and that keeps him on top. He wallops Mario on GameFAQs and beat him even worse in an IGN mini-contest held a couple years back (it was a tripling, IIRC). I don't see why GameSpot's fanbase would be so different as to change such convincing results.

I missed the last two contests. Completely. Life...wheeee. Hopefully this wall of text isn't TOO huge. I made sure I didn't put too much in.

But I decided to come back and predict the Sp2K9 game contest. I had to carefully find a bracket that would show the matches, but not the results. Then I had to carefully move from poll-to-poll... Oh, and I did the Oracle Challenge, too! =P (did really badly, not surprisingly)

Highlights of the contest for me:
Mario Kart's success, at least in my eyes. Perhaps it was that series contest that lowered my expectations. I really thought Star Fox 64 would edge out MK64, and I didn't think SMK stood a chance against Sonic 3, let alone Super Metroid. How wrong I was. But how much I LOVE the MarioKart series...

Pokemon's success. Great games. When I saw RBY's R1 result I could only imagine how screwed over people's Oracle scores were (I was right on that). It's truly amazing to see Pokemon's progress since 2004. People were crazy shocked in the 2006 series contest when the series almost beat Metroid. But even that day doesn't hold a candle to what the series did in Sp2K9. Of course, the rise of Pokemon was somewhat predictable... we just didn't realize it would be to this extent.

Disappointments IMO:
Old-school Square blowing it. Seriously, FF3/6 couldn't even win against 3 other Nintendo games combined. I was also very disappointed in FF2/4; at least it rSFFed Final Fantasy (the first match I've seen that was -convincingly- rSFF; my memory is rusty, though). Now, some may have been excited that unpredictable things happened. However, when Square and Nintendo are the only companies who dominate amongst old school generations, you would want these two to at least compete. Nope. Nintendo > Square > the rest. Bah.

Kingdom Hearts' strength: sorry, I just don't like the games very much; I can somewhat understand why people like the games so much simply because this is FF-Faqs, but...meh. Well, you can like it if you want. There's a good storyline, I'll give it that. I'm just glad RE4 beat out KH2. Interesting how Sora lost it against Bowser the next year, though. Finally...Random fact: Two of my recent friends have the same name. They decided to distinguish themselves with the names "Bowser" and "Sora"... how interesting when associating it with GameFAQs contest.

Total Nintendo/Square domination in the later rounds...I'm sure people were worshiping MGS4. It's too bad MGS got screwed over with a tough bracket placement. It's arguably a Top Five game now, or close to it.

Both highlight and disappointment:
Zelda: OoT beating FF7. Weird how I didn't see this coming even after the semi-finals. Anyway, it's nice to see that FF7 is beatable, but I almost miss FF7 somewhat losing it's "iconic" status. It's no longer FF7FAQs, but OoTFAQs.... oh, and I like FF7 more.

Well on other sites, among other voters and critics, most or all of the Zelda games would be weaker. At the very least, Ocarina of Time may not be their #1, and even if it is it probably wouldn't be so far ahead of the #3 game on most other sites. Twilight Princess would most certainly not be as strong. It would be in the 15-25 range at absolute most, and that may be fairly generous. Majora's Mask and Wind Waker may actually be stronger at other sites, and Link's Awakening would be a tad bit weaker at least. As for the Mario games, Super Mario 3/World/64 would all be closer to Ocarina's level (rightfully so), Galaxy would of course be stronger (let's not forget even in that CrispyGamer contest Wind Waker lost to Psychonauts, so it's not like LoZ was worth much there), Mario Kart would've likely toasted Super Metroid on a good majority of other sites. Neither Smash game would be nearly as strong, so Mario and Link would probably rely on their own games for strength more so, and be weaker as a result, putting them in range of characters like Snake and Freeman.

Cool to see a post from Haste, and how different your opinion can be when you're not on the board during the contest. Tons of people were going on about OoT beating FF7... I still didn't think it would happen, but if you were around then there was no way you could avoid hearing about it. My attitude is pretty similar to yours on that event, I liked it better when FF7 was on top. Zelda officially dominates everything here after that happened, which is a lot less interesting than when it was Zelda vs FF7.

Ugh, another poll glitch today. That's 2 poll glitches in less than a week.

Oh man, Geolocation is weird. There is only one vote for "I never play games at home" after the first 5 minutes and North America is the only continent to vote for that option. Then by looking at the countries, both the United States and Canada have voted for "I never play games at home". That's not possible for there to be one vote for "I never play games at home", but for the US/Canada to have at least one vote for "I never play games at home".

Cool to see a post from Haste, and how different your opinion can be when you're not on the board during the contest.

Looking at the Guru contest the board predicted pretty much how I expected. I was a bit surprised about Street Fighter II > Sonic being the popular choice (seems the board underestimated Sonic, while I overesimated), and...huh, OoT didn't get that many championship picks despite all the hype. I WAS amused at the number of people that expected another Starcraft run. Just about nobody expected RBY to get that far... simply awesome.

And, for fun, here were my bold Round 1 picks compared to the Guru...
Sonic > SFII
Sonic 3 > Super Metroid
FF6 > Zelda: LA
Goldeneye > RE2 -_-;
FF7 > Star Fox 64 -_-;;
GTA:VC > KH
Halo > GTA3
TP > FF12
SMG > Team Fortress 2 (DOH!!!)

Of all those, I got only two correct. Owowowow. I missed practically every match I considered a toss-up... not good....though I suppose in the long run I did okay, with 515 points in the end, in the top 2%. Had I predicted OoT's championship I would have nearly made the top 50.

I'm not sure if you're saying that MGS or MGS4 is a top 5 game, but you'rd be wrong on both counts. I put them both at very similar strength and around the 11-15 area.

These are not ranked in any order. Mostly.

OoT
FFVII
RBY
LttP
SSBB
FFX
SM64
SMW
SMB3

They're all definitely above both MGS games and while it's impossible to know exactly where SSBM is since it got to lay with FFX with KH and then OoT, I'd be shocked if it wasn't also somewhere in that group. I'd take TP over both as well.
