Considering Drake only went from bottom feeder to basically high fodder... not all that much of an improvement honestly.

oh so it keeps a huge chunk of LBP's stuff and adds something that has even more potential, that's a pretty sweet deal i guess, It's like buying a million games for the price of one.

So if Tanner got into a match with Phoenix Wright and beat him, you wouldn't think that was an incredible improvement?

It certainly wouldn't mean he's particularly strong, no. It's a huge improvement for him, but it's not like it means much because he's still losing to most characters in the bracket.

Semantics though, so whatever. Huge personal gain, but still just a blip on the radar as far as contest relevance goes.

Drake still lost both times and it's really hard to say how much stronger he was this time around, since lol 4ways and such.

Wouldn't it be better to compare Sackboy to Shepard than to Drake anyway? Shepard did triple a character, turbofodder he may have been, and pulled a solid performance on Pikachu. Hell, Sackboy this contest would probably beat the tar out of 2008 Shepard, and if LBP2 really gets some hype and hits the level of Uncharted 2 or Mass Effect 2 on this site, well, Sackboy could become a serious contender on this site.

On the other hand, LBP1 is bigger here than Uncharted 1 or ME1 ever were, so Sackboy probably doesn't have as much room to boost as Drake or Shepard did. Still, it could be enough to make him a midcarder. Wouldn't it be nice to actually have some new midcarders for a change?

Shepard definitely scored a massive boost. He's in the low midcarder range now I believe, and if it isn't all HYPEHYPEHYPE he pretty much has a return ticker guaranteed for quite a few years. The problem is that Sackboy won't have the ridiculously amazing hype campaign Shepard had for LBP2 AFAIK, so...he's got his work cut out to reach that level.

I don't know, if Uncharted 2 could get a ton of hype, why not LBP2?

Of course, LBP was plenty hyped as is, and then kinda fell off the face of the earth after release, but if Sony could amp up the hype for LBP2, Sackboy could become a legitimate midcarder.

Really, arguably the most revolutionary games of the past decade aren't that big here. WoW, GTA3, Halo, Wii Sports...none of them mean much here. RE4's probably the most meaningful game this generation that's made much of an impact here, and surely part of it is because it was released on three different systems and originally hit hard in a dead-year.

I genuinely believe MMOs have huge potential beyond simply being grindfests centred around killing monsters. Puzzle Pirates circa 2004 tapped into some of them: having an economy where the means of production can be controlled by players (shops making ships/swords/cloth/etc.) in groups forming flags. But to own shops required taking over an island, and that allow other groups to launch attacks on it at the weekend (with 24 hour notice). Large scale blockade battles with hundreds of jobbers chosing who to go with based on pay and their opinion of the people in the flag! Combat, crucially, was based around lots of different puzzles, from a tetris-style swordfighting game to a chess-style battle navigation board. Players would learn from each other how to become better at them, and the best players would be hugely important allies. Add a load of sandbox elements to this basis (from inn games, to going on pillages, to becoming the best at a particular puzzle, to running events) and you have one hell of an online experience. It never quite worked out like that, but what if it had done...

It was pretty funny with GTA, people were so stubborn that Metroid Prime was not weak that they overestimated the rest of the series. Yes San Andreas flopped, though seeing how Oblivion performed it wasn't that bad, but people called GTA3 a flop when almost no one had it advancing.

You're laughably wrong on both counts. Halo is a joke compared to actual good shooters, like Doom 3, Left 4 Dead, Call of Duty 4, Tribes, Team Fortress 2, Half-Life 2, Unreal Tournament, Counter-Strike, and a ton of quasi-shooters like Oblivion, Fallout 3, BioShock and a host of others. Then there's good old shooters, like Doom, Quake, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark and all the rest.

Sandbox gaming in general is terrible and overdone.

I'll quote someone smarter than I for this one:

Single player Halo: fun at first. Then you realize there are only four enemy types and that each endless-seeming level consists of "walk around, enter room/clearing full of the same enemies you just killed, kill them again, walk around some more, etc." I was having a pretty okay time playing through Campaign mode, but then arrived at this stage where I walked into the exact same featureless, nondescript room about a dozen times in a row, with the same group of enemies waiting in ambush every time. Talk about tedious. And yeah, I know about the Flood and how you get to fight them as well, but I got too bored with Halo to make the effort to progress to that point. When taking out bad guys in an FPS becomes a chore instead of a thrill, it's time to move on. I hate playing Halo alone.

Multiplayer Halo: I guess co-op might be fun, but I've never gotten the chance to do it with anyone extensively. But I have played a few deathmatches, and I think I loathe them. Every time, I get shot in the back of the head 24 times in a row, and I'm barely able to even graze my opponent. When I tell him that his fortunes would be vastly different were we playing Guilty Gear X2 #Reload, like real men, he laughs and sticks me with a blue grenade, killing me a final time and winning. Then he calls me Cortanna while sodomizing me in front of his Halo buddies. I really hate playing Halo with other people.

Redeeming Qualities: It can be sort of fun - until you realize that you're living on a planet with an XBox port of Half-Life 2.
Nails in the coffin: Halo 2 and 3.

Note that I've played all 3 games to completion, with a LOT of multiplayer in between (my friends and I love shooter multiplayer), and we've all more or less agreed Halo blows and should never be touched again.

@Ulti: You do realize that the "worst game ever" is a decent midcarder here, right? Unless you want to believe that RE4/KH2/TP/MGS3/SSBB/MGS4 are all really so weak.

Even Vice City was arguably a bit of a joke in the games contest IMO. It's funny that we're all saying that Metroid Prime is weak just because it narrowly lost to a game that would've likely toasted it at some other sites, and would've at least put up a good fight at other places.

Unless they're being ironic, which I'm not buying based on the rest of the post. So I'm calling someone bitter over getting their ass kicked in a game they've barely played by someone easily more experienced with them, which is a ridiculous thing to whine about.
