Because the fight between Soda and Pop continues.

More like Coke and Pop. Like with last time, Pop is trying to build up a lead on Coke, only to blow it overnight.

That's because Coke dominates the rest of the world so badly that people think that's what the drink is called.

Kind of like Band-Aid

I put together the total nom ranks from the last Contest tonight.

http://board8.wikia.com/wiki/Winter_2010_Total_Nominations

The top 98 ranks are based on SB following "proper" seeding so that overall #1 Link would face the weakest #1 first (Sonic), and so on down the line. I'm sure SB made some swap outs here and there, but for the most part I think it turned out pretty good.

Then the noms part ends at 98 (since he told us Ocelot/Jak were the last ones to make the cut) and the final 30 are based on how well they did in their Vote In polls.

Kind of neat to look over, I thought!

Coke was able to manage a few cuts overnight against Soda. First one coming at 5:17 AM, which was the same time Coke got its first cut in the poll from last year. There were only 3 cuts total, all between 5:00 AM and 6:00 AM. Coke managed 7 cuts total in last year's poll.

Ah, so the Europe vote is weakening. Excellent news, this means Crono will be able to average 44% instead of 43% against Vincent during the FFVII Total Domination Zone next year.

Darn it, my Crono/Soda correlation is ruined!

Truthfully, though, this soda/pop/coke debate fascinates me. I know it's the 3rd time in 2 years or something this poll has been run, so I understand the complaints, but if it were the first time, or the first time in a long time, I'd love this poll.

I'd be very interested to know if there were any correlation between using "soda" and voting Democratic outside of just the regional effects. I'd also be interested if soda is correlated with cities (my guess is yes, particularly in regions of the country that use pop or coke predominantly)

Personally....

Coke - This means Coca-cola alone to me. Sounds very odd to mean all soda.....er.....carbonated drinks.
Cola - This is fine. I'm not sure if it's technically or etymologically "correct" or if it only refers to certain types of drinks, but if it does, I don't know what the distinction is other than that Coke and Pepsi are both colas. Not a term I'd typically use though.
Fizzy Drink - This sounds British, and while understandable, I would not want to call something I was drinking that. No need to remind myself of the worst part of carbonated drinks.....the carbonation!
Mineral - I would not understand what this meant. I'd guess mineral water at first.
Pop - I would easily understand what is meant but do not like this word.
Soda - This is most natural to me.
Soda Pop - Uh.......sure. It sounds rather childish, actually.
Soft Drink - This appears to me very standard, even universal........though I don't know if it actually is.
Tonic - This would sound very odd to me.

Trends for the Soda Poll:

http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=te6dPBHP1rD_vNLqsiINjag

I'll be using that page to store various trend charts on polls that I do decide to do trend charts for.

Compared to last year, Soda had a stronger early vote and also handled the Night Vote better this time around. There was only one hour below 30% this year, while Soda had 2 hours below 30% in last year's poll.

The fact there was an ASV this time around meant that Soda had to wait until the ASV to start getting those 40%+ hours again. Last year's poll had no ASV and Soda was getting those 40%+ hours before 12:00 PM (first one was the 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM hour).

Ah, so the Europe vote is weakening. Excellent news, this means Crono will be able to average 44% instead of 43% against Vincent during the FFVII Total Domination Zone next year.

Also, comparison of the first 12 hours for Soda in last year's poll and this year's poll:

Time | 2009 Poll | 2010 Poll
1:00 | 47.83% | 49.79%
2:00 | 47.19% | 47.22%
3:00 | 41.16% | 42.40%
4:00 | 37.51% | 36.94%
5:00 | 33.21% | 33.49%
6:00 | 27.41% | 28.53%
7:00 | 26.42% | 36.01%
8:00 | 31.90% | 34.23%
9:00 | 35.95% | 36.50%
10:00 | 37.88% | 38.83%
11:00 | 38.59% | 38.94%
12:00 | 41.05% | 36.85%

Soda handled that Night Vote a little bit better this year and also recovered much more easily once the Night Vote ended. Of course, last year's poll had no ASV, so Soda was already getting those 40%+ hours even before the first half of the poll ended. This time, Soda had to wait until the ASV to start getting those 40%+ hours again.

Nothing. It's going to be a fantastic game, and it's about time we got two mainline Mario games in one console generation.

NSMBW doesn't hurt either (though I'm not crazy about it). That's another thing weird to me in today's gaming world: Mario's 2D-games aren't really mainline games anymore, or at least they don't feel like it.

I guess because we haven't had a 2d console Mario since what...Yoshi's Island?

But yes, it is great that we get two main Marios to go with the two main Zeldas every generation(although TP is kinda cheating, being a Wii launch title and stuff), and a direct sequel at that. I guess Nintendo realized once you get to exploring the universe, you hit the ceiling in subtitles.

From the Valve blog:

Last week's in-game poll asking who your favorite L4D2 character was resulted in an interesting stat. 360 users were clearly Ellis fans with him winning by a wide margin with 43% of the vote. PC users were split with Nick and Ellis coming in a virtual tie with 33%. Reading the forums, Rochelle surged a bit in popularity after people watched her in "The Passing" teaser. Our internal poll tells us we should make more teasers.

So I guess Ellis really is the best Left 4 Dead has to offer... Sad. I still wonder how Zoey would have done.

Ellis is really as strong as it gets in the L4D series. The character was really well-like across the board when L4D2 came out. If another L4D character gets in, I only see one of the special zombie types (Witch, Smoker, etc.) but they will be absolute fodder.

Eh, I think the L4D1 characters are more iconic. At least, I remember them better than the L4D2 characters.

Of course, choosing one to nominate would be a bit tough, and it probably wouldn't be worth the effort to nominate them anyway compared to someone like, say, G Man.
