Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 898

Nominations aren't everything. Even if it goes against nomination counts, I think it would be better if different fans got to see a character they like than seeing the contest catering to the same small fanbase over and over again.

So basically, you want to make it a communist regime instead of a democracy where the people choose their elected characters.

If Edgeworth gets a second investigation game then I think he stands out enough on his own to earn a place.
But honestly, I'd like the western guys to give us something more substantial.
Shephard/Altair gave us hope, but in the end they didn't really impress that much.

Big Daddy woooooooo, but yeah Niko Bellic, you suck.

Nothing wrong with communism, in theory.

Though yeah, if Guybrush can reach the top 80 most nominated than he should get in the bracket.

Then again CJayC once told us that he took the top 32, no questions asked and picked a chosed the rest.

Honestly though, once you start refusing to count Guybrush noms, then thats a slippery slope. Why should Bacon feel the need to count noms of any character he doesn't like?

Really, its best just to give it to the characters with the most noms.

I wouldn't like either extreme. I thinking more along the lines of a Benevolent Dictatorship. SBAllen would mostly follow public opinion but can make changes wherever he wants if it would make a better contest.

Well it is his contest.

Also if we're just going to take the top 128 then what was the point of the vote-in?

To let the people have their opinion heard. Its better to use a larger base of gamefaq users to decide the final 32 or so instead of just nominations. since thats a much smaller sample size.

Nothing, and I'd be fine with that; though if going by last contests noms, Guybrush would still be locked into the contest even with 48. He was a 9 seed, right?

Guybrush has a fanbase that is hardly affected by SFF with most of the characters we got in these contests. And Guybrush fans have proven to be very hardcore, getting him in year after year. I don't see why 10% is out of the question at all.

In the game contest, Monkey Island only fell from 9.73% to 8.09% when SimCity and Tecmo Bowl were replaced with Sonic and Street Fighter II. Also, Guybrush has almost no characters that could LFF him in vote-in polls.

Yeah, so? This is a contest, not a society. I would be thrilled if Marina Lightyears could make it in "only" every couple of contests.

I don't see why 10% is out of the question at all.

If a static percentage exists for Guybrush, it sure as hell ain't 10%. This theory has been proven wrong time and time again.

We're talking about a super obscure japanese only release visual novel.

I'd take Driver 3 to beat it due to people hearing of it before vs. wtf Fate/Stay Night is.

MI went from 11.37% to 14.25% against SMB3 not very impressive considering SMB3 dropped OVER 25% between rounds.

The point is that everyone who's ever played Fate/Stay Night on the site probably voted for Archer. Monkey Island has a significantly higher play base then 5% on Gamefaqs. At least 13-15% I'd say. So using that as a reason why hardcore fanbases don't work is silly.

Again, I ask. How does a joke character who is from a decade old meme thats not funny anymore have a "hardcore fanbase"? I'd consider hardcore fanbases people who love a game or character, and will vote for them over nearly anyone. A joke character is not something that someone would vote for over anyone. A character that represents an entire genre and a character that is as loveable as Guybrush represents something that has a hardcore fanbase.

You do know that you probably only need less than 500 nominations to get a 9 seed, that won't exactly save you. Guybrush probably does have a hardcore fanbase, but it isn't anywhere close to the 10% that you think. Heck you'd think the game would have done better if that was the case.

All I'm saying is that Guybrush is always about 15-18k votes in every single match he's had. Thats about as static of a hardcore fanbase as you can get. Lets say he gets only 10k in a vote in... Thats over 10% due to most of those polls having under 100k votes. If theres anyone who has a static vote base in these contests, its him.

If Monkey Island itself was able to get 9k votes against big name franchises like Sonic, Mario and Street Fighter, I don't think 10k is too much to ask for with the lesser names you'd get in a vote in poll.
