Gut instinct on Blastoise would be "can beat up fodder, will lose to decently strong entrants". If he gets stuck against an opponent somewhere in between those categories, then there's pretty much nothing to go on, but I'd probably take the opponent. I'd take Squirtle over him by a good margin, too.

really, I'd have though the splinter cell brand name was more of casual bait, while the name street fighter's more for the hardcore and fighters aren't really the top genre.

Splinter Cell's looking much better than it did early last night.

Surprised it's not doing better, though. It's the next big casual release, and those have actually been popular on GameFAQs recently.

Release still isn't big enough and too far away from the next contest to justify bringing back Sam Fisher, though. Then again, the casuals will probably just nom him to a #3 seed anyway and we'll get to watch him get crushed by Meta-Knight or Ama or whoever (though he'll still do much better than in previous contests and might even win a couple of matches if he's in a Big Daddy-level fourpack).

I'd pick Mario Galaxy to beat Metroid Prime out of sheer bias.

Yes, Galaxy and Metroid Prime are the two best received 3D Nintendo titles because they have the least shortcomings (aka "why didn't they put this in"), but that argument loses its power when faced with fanboys. Rate these games in order of strength:

Super Mario Galaxy
Metroid Prime
Half-Life 2
Diablo II
StarCraft
World of Warcraft

Also, Fact or Fiction (or opinion, fine):

World of Warcraft > Fallout 3 > Super Mario Galaxy

Shadow of the Colossus > Portal > Super Metroid

Vice City > BioShock > Metroid Prime

As far as contest-strength goes? Nah, certainly doesn't prove anything. That said, it does show the board is pretty split between them. If Squirtle and Blastoise are rightfully expected to reach the Round Robin, then having them both reach the Round Robin may damage each others' chances. I still think having them face off in a division would probably be the best. If the board really wants to see the loser of that battle, there will be another board rally this year or it will do well in next year's NRT...but if most people would be content with just one of them rather than both of them in a contest like I suspect, then they'll just support the winner a lot and move on to a different Pokemon the next year.

Just saying, nobody's calling for Pichu, Raichu, Charmander, Charmeleon, Nidorino, or whatever evolutions Mudkip, Bidoof, and Lucario have (if they have any) to make a contest. Squirtle and Blastoise have a different relationship, but I think people going water in R/B/Y and FR/LG will generally be pretty happy with either of them. Besides, if there are a lot of Pokemon to make it into the NRT-bracket, then some SFF-matches will be pretty much necessary early on...and that's one of the most reasonable ones you can have.

This is probably just going to sound like a shameless plug, but in the CBVIII NIT contest I'm about to start tomorrow night, both Squirtle and Blastoise were the two most nominated Pokemon, but Squirtle got a few more nominations overall. Both will be competing however, so it remains to be seen what happens in the actual voting.
