So, let me just ask this: why is there a debate about whether Squrtle or Blastoise is more popular? This is surprisingly unclear to me despite our arguing and playing through Fire Red. Where are the pros and cons for each of them?

Squirtle love should be because he had massive appeal as one of Ash's pokemon, Blastoise got billed as the Zard's rival with the whole pokemon Red/Blue thing.

I know that Bowser is on a tier with high carders like Sora/Dante/MMX etc. Lloyd is fodder. There is a HUGE gap between those two tiers. Bowser is closer to Mario then he is to Lloyd easily. Hell, he's most likely closer to Mario then he is to Kratos Aurion as well.

Numbers are numbers are numbers. Would you prefer I put it this way:

Bowser beats Lloyd with about 73% probably.
Before SFF Mario beats Bowser with about 63% probably.

Big difference but not as big as you'd think. Closer to halfway than not.

Well, first of all Bowser's more like 2/3s of the way to Mario from Lloyd so this is kinda distracting from my original point.

Would take Charizard to get about 61% on Mewtwo pre-sff and would take Mewtwo to get around 67% on Lloyd.
If you've got Blastoise as a bit weaker than Mewtwo I wouldn't see it as much a stretch for Charizard to get 65% on him and Blastoise to get 60% on Lloyd for instance.
