Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 897

Didn't know there were music game fans on the board. I actually like music games, though I don't own any. Maybe I should get Guitar Hero 2 once I get my PS2 sometime? Nah, save up for Rock Band 2 when I own a PS3, that's probably the better idea, right?

Trying to construct GameFAQs' Best Games of the Decade:

1) Super Smash Bros. Brawl
2) Super Smash Bros. Melee
3) The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
4) Final Fantasy X
5) Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
6) Kingdom Hearts
7) Resident Evil 4
8) Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
9) Kingdom Hearts 2
10) Pokemon Gold/Silver
11) Final Fantasy IX
12) Half-Life 2
13) The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
14) Fallout 3
15) World of Warcraft

Okay, after #15 I couldn't quite think of what else, and even then the order here may be a bit fuzzy.

Oh, you've got LMS on your ignore list, huh?

As well he should if he's going to start posting useless lists from magazines no one cares about or asked for. A normal functioning person stops doing something if 50+ people yell at him about it.

We should be getting back to actual contest discussion though, and not some talk about which game is overrated or not, followed by me spitting out tons of random lists at you. Of course, it's quite clear now that most GameFAQs users don't really care for the truly next-gen stuff, but whatever. I had some questions to ask:

1) How do you nominate characters? And what priority should I give to nominating characters? FYI I would personally prefer nominating characters who got screwed over in this contest (e.g. Vincent).

2) Ngamer64 was talking about rumors of a games contest coming soon, except using the new format (128 1vs1). What is the general favorite for contest champion in such a situation? I'm assuming it's Pokemon RBY, but I'd personally just back Brawl...I'd probably pick Mario 64 over Melee now (if only because of personal favorites...plus Melee apparently got hammered almost as badly by Ocarina's SFF despite having less reason to do so).
red sox 777 | Posted 3/25/2010 10:12:51 AM | message detail
The favorite would naturally be Ocarina of Time, the defending champion.

Although Marcus Fenix is clearly inferior to the awesomeness of Cole Train.

LMS wasn't that bad during the contest, even if he is a little too list-happy today. Then again, he's still pretty young. I like the guy.

I'll post the last list tomorrow. So far it sounds like I did a good job predicting who should stay and go in the next bracket since there's been nobody against my rankings otherwise besides keeping Marcus Fenix around for a potential Gears 3 boost.

The next list is gonna be a bit tricky to decide which characters stay and go, so good to get the easy stuff out of the way at least!

Well I went to sleep. I'm back, I guess.

Fact or Fiction:

Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning would be weaker than any game that made the bottom quarter of the games contest's bracket.

We should've seen StarCraft's bomb in the games contest coming from a mile away, because not only was it stuck behind the overrated half division in '04 but going by lists, its critical acclaim was falling like a rock (same true for Metroid Prime and slightly true for Half-Life. Though those same lists also had a resurgence of GTA games...).

Diddy Kong should be considered a Western character because he originates from a game whose development was spearheaded by British guys.

One more thing to say:

If you hate the whole "artsy action adventures" trend, guess which game started it.

Hint: Said game is widely called the best game ever (in fact winning this site's contest), and the trend of starting "artsy action adventures" is one of the reasons why.

Online, I downloaded it to my system 13.69% 332
Online, I had a boxed game shipped to me 15.38% 373
At a game store (GameSpot) 43.59% 1057
At an electronics store (Best Buy) 10.76% 261
At a department store (Wal-Mart) 9.81% 238
Other 6.76% 164
TOTAL VOTES 2425

LOL, SBAllen misspelled "GameStop". Doesn't seem to be hurting GameStop's performance here based on this:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=3126

GameStop is doing a little worse this time, mostly at the expense of downloadable games gaining more popularity and buying online is doing better. GameStop should die overnight.

Also, I noticed this:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=3861&region=EUR
http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=3861&region=ASI
http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=3861&region=OCE

LOL, I wonder if GameStop stores exist in some countries in Europe, Asia, and Oceania. If GameStop doesn't exist outside of North America, it could be that the GameSpot misspelling is helping out GameStop with doing better in those regions.

It would be funny to see MGS4 triple Warhammer Online, just to go and say "lol Gamespy!"

Because on their 10 best games of 2008 feature, MGS4 was 9th and Warhammer Online was 2nd (and SSBB didn't even make it, and Fallout 3 was #1).

Speaking of which, has anybody here played Warhammer Online?

Wait, so there are people who don't have LMS ignored? He is one of the lucky few to grace my ignore list, for his asperger-inspired, contentless posts.

You're clearly only influenced by the New England Journal of Medicine's recent Aspergers study. It's something like the #2 most common childhood mental disorder behind ADD now and tending upward fast.

ADD vs Aspergers, 12 hour day match, who wins?

Okay, so the consensus is that anti-voted characters do worse in 128 1vs1 12-hour polls contests, which is funny considering how they benefit from 4-ways. Meaning that Sephiroth is likely still stronger than Snake and that Snake was just bandwagoned, plus that MASTER CHIEF IS NOW A LOW MIDCARDER AT BEST!!!

Aspergers is more popular to have, though. You now see kids all over the internet claim to have Aspergers as an excuse for having ****ty social lives rather than taking the blame for their poor personalities, their lack of effort, or whatever the hell is really at fault. I'd probably still take ADD because of the casuals, but I wouldn't be surprised if Aspergers gave it a good fight. At the very least, I expect it to dominate the board vote!

And I buy most of my games online these days. Let's face it, online just has better deals. Even though Amazon's video game Gold Box deals usually suck ass, their regular prices are usually great, they have good pre-order bonuses for big games ($20 certificate for video games for pre-ordering Galaxy 2, aw yeah), and they're pretty quick if you make use of Prime trials (though $90/year for regular Prime is a bit extreme). It's a shame my Prime trial is about to run out.

Anyway, for the last mock bracket list, I'm keeping Fenix and ditching the rest. Here's the last group, and the most iffy of the bunch. Tell me which you want to see return and which you want to get booted.

A lot of those depend on the situation (how many from the series are already in, how much room is left). Personally I would rather build a list of 200+ characters then start eliminating from there.

Juggling 200+ names at once would be a pain, though I'd probably just divide them based on company and debate then, like take all the possible Nintendo characters and argue who should be in the bracket, then all the Square-Enix characters, and so on.

But I like this idea of just splitting up the bracket, remove the stinkers, and then decide who to plug in.

I don't buy online due to being paranoid. I've ordered 2 games online in my life, 1 from ebay, and 1 from an import store. Neither I ever got. So I know stuff like Amazon is more secure, but I've been burned so I'm scared of doing it again.

In the UK the group continues to trade on the high street as both GAME and Gamestation. The company plans to maintain and grow Gamestation as a separate brand[15], as its image is that of a store for "gamers".[16].

From wiki. GAME = Gamestation. I've had a load of annoying experiences with them in the past, the worst being when I bought a used Wii and they hadn't taken the parental lock off of it. They thought it was me who was making some mistake so I had to argue for ages till they eventually apologised. The Wii works fine now, at least. I purchase from a local independent store when I buy RL... I know the people there fairly well (they're a bit Zelda mad; they have a huge metal model of Link in the front window >.>).
