~*Say What? Some Common Stat Topic Lingo Defined*~

SFF (Same Fanbase Factor) - Same Fanbase Factor is the theory that, if two contestants share a common fanbase, the weaker of the two options will underperform in a direct matchup. For instance, Link was expected to defeat Ganon with 65% of the vote in 2004, based on their 2003 values. Instead, Link collected near 88% of the vote, because the Zelda fanbase so clearly sided with him. However, take some SFF labels with a grain of salt, as many people will slap it onto any match that doesn't make total sense. This has caused a few SFF jokes, with LordOfDabu's "Some Frivolous Factor" being the funniest of them.

X-Stats - Short form of Extrapolated Statistics, aka the mathematical "strength" of a contestant that can be determined based on their performance in any given matchup. See above for a detailed explanation of the x-stat process.

Noble Nine - Link, Cloud, Solid Snake, Sephiroth, Mario, Crono, Sonic, Samus and Mega Man.

Near-Elite - The Squall, Auron, Vincent, Kirby, Missingno, Tifa, et al group that has come at, near or even ahead of Noble Nine characters recently.

The Fodder Line - A final X-Stat value of 15% or below.

And you're gonna hate me for saying this, but my younger brother's all excited over getting SotC some day. Then again this is based entirely on watching Cloud8745 play it, and he LOVES the game (favorite on the PS2).

I was trying to play SotC a few weeks ago. "Couldn't be as bad as Ulti says. Besides, he like MP with its LOL-worthy FPS controls".

Dear God was it ****ing terrible. Just an unholy mess of terrible framerate, bland graphics, and God awful controls. I was messing around with that first colossi for about 20 minutes or so, and I was like "**** this, I'm going back to Wind Waker".

And to think that SotC is one of the three games that has been called "Best Game of the Decade" more than once (with Half-Life 2 and World of Warcraft being the two others), considering all these guys saying "dear god, it's horrible."

Well, frame rate and camera issues don't seem to be too much of an issue hopefully. It can't get much worse than the framerate issues of Super Mario World, or the camera in Super Mario 64/Sunshine, right?

And just in case you hate Metroid Prime because of its "LOL-worthy FPS controls" well, the game was originally supposed to be in third person, but Shigeru Miyamoto himself told the developers to make it in first-person. Miyamoto was originally going to make Ocarina of Time in first person, but held off of the idea because he felt that Young Link should be seen on screen, so he just dumped the first person idea into another game instead.

So yeah, it's Miyamoto's fault that Metroid Prime is first person. Also his fault that Wind Waker is cel-shaded, and that the DS and Wii are being sold mostly to casuals ('cuz that was the intention).

So it's Miyamoto's fault that this site has kinda sidetracked off of Nintendo nowadays, huh? Keep in mind that the new Nintendo games that are strong on this site don't have a whole lot of his influence.

I enjoyed the little bit I played and loved watching my brother play it, and I know it's among his favorite games too. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

I love Wind Waker's art style, and it was Miyamoto who wanted to keep Yoshi's Island pastel art direction, so I can't hate on that. But yeah, I hated MP's controls, that was some "Goldeneye 64" level of fail there :/

I still can't get over that D-Toid top 10 of the decade. I'm looking down the list and I'm thinking "Yes, RE4! Yes, someone realized GoW2 as the classic it is! Aw **** son SMG, BG&E, and Portal? Half-Life 2 as #2? Best list ever!"

Shadow of the Colossus is pretty frustrating until you get the hang of it. I wouldn't give up after just one Colossus because they get a lot better.

Different tastes indeed. Okay, how about...on Gamesblog's 50 Best Games of the Decade list, there were only 4 Japanese games in the top 20 (lol different tastes), and they are, in ascending order, Shadow of the Colossus at 18th, Ico at 17th, Super Mario Galaxy at 15th, and Resident Evil 4 at 7th.

On Pastemagazine's list, 5 Japanese games were present, which were Final Fantasy XII at 20th, Metal Gear Solid 2 at 16th, Super Mario Galaxy at 13th, Resident Evil 4 at 5th, and "that silly erratic framerate thingy" at 4th. Of course, Ulti will be very glad to hear that the #1 choice on the list was...Portal!

On the other hand, here's how our best games of the decade likely goes:

That SotC thing sounds like how the 2d Mario games are kinda frustrating to me until I get the hang of it. Then again, Super Mario World felt MUCH easier on the Virtual Console then it felt on the GBA for some reason, so who knows?
