Random and possibly stupid idea here. What about going to specific boards here in gamefaqs, and run contests to see who is the overall favorite in that fanbase.

It should be useful to new franchises that are bound to get tons of new characters in.

Like for example FF XIII. It sounds like a good way of getting some field data to analyze characters before the contest. Extremely boring too, but hey.

Other similar idea is simply doing the "Do you like this character?" thing in various boards across gamefaqs. Does that idea have any merit at all?

It makes more sense that four-ways brings in more votes. The percent of people that come to this site and not vote is probably a lot higher than the people that vote, mostly from people that don't care or don't know either character. In four-ways there is a better chance that the average voter would know at least one of the characters well enough to vote for him/her.

OoT/FFVII was an anomaly caused by people returning to see whether or not an extra poll would be played. The other two bonus polls brought in the votes.

We don't really know as much as the higher ups do, I'd imagine. They likely have all the stats and data that show exact traffic... and who knows, maybe 4ways really does generate more traffic and it may come back, regardless of this poll. So you'd better hope that the site stats don't favor 4ways.

Besides, one year isn't a fair way to evaluate it like this -- we've seen contests' vote totals differ drastically from contest to contest, and 124 of our 127 matches were cut in half (with one of the other three being a SFF-match).

I wonder how much the higher-ups really care what kind of format the contests are anyway. We probably played a decent part in four-ways being thrown out and the contests bring in votes either way.

I don't know. Balthier was awesome too but he suffered from mediocre design (among other things). I would definitely say that Hope and Vanille are more photogenic.
