So we ended up diverging from 2006 trends, but it was by a lot less than I expected before the match, showing that FFVII's day vote hasn't completely tanked, only somewhat.

I completely agree with what creative said in the last topic: Link has a very real chance of losing next year. He looked invincible in 2003 and 2007 also, but unexpected things happen, and this year the Noble Nine has become more closely clustered in strength than in any year since 2002. Clinkeroth domination over the field is gone, and the number of characters worth 40% on Link indirectly has doubled to at least 4- 5 if you think Mario is worth 40% on Link indirectly.

Awww Yeah, first contest to ever make it on the leaderboard and looks like I'll finish in 17th place. I would've some money if I stuck to my Charizard>Sora ultra-upset too!

It was a really fun contest this year. I don't know what the consensus was but I thought having two matches a day/the 12 hr format was really aweseom.

I liked the 12-hour format too. I think ideally, I would want to make the switch to 24-hour matches beginning in round 4 of a 128-character bracket. At that point there are no boring fodder matches left, and it's better to have full matches.

Dr_Football landed the best 127-hit combo on Board 8. I don't know if my health bar will ever replenish.

I'd object to that. I love the quick pace of 12-hour matches and think three 24-hour affairs are just fine. It really speeds up obvious matches, and exciting matches are still exciting.

I had a horrible bracket with dumb upsets like Gordon > Tifa and Zack > MMX and still would have made the leaderboard if I just took the Charizard > Sora upset in the division final like I had originally. Ughh.

Demyx is better than Axel.

But even if Link is beatable, he's really only going to be beatable by one or maybe two people (i.e. in the finals if the bracket is seeded properly). So once a free path to the finals is set, we may as well leave Link out of the bracket until the finals.
While it's true that many characters are guaranteed not to lose in the first round or two (though we would have included Crono in that category, and see how that worked out), there's no one else who we can guarantee (as much as anything in these contests is guaranteed, I agree that it's not 100%) will reach the finals unscathed. Therefore there is no reason to have Link in the bracket until the finals.

24 hours > all. It makes each match more important, and makes the best matches even better. Of course, if you're going to have so many matches in a contest, 12 hours are probably preferable.

Well, my third contest is coming to a close. I can't say it was as good as my first one, when L-Block shocked the world and made the board hilarious for four days straight. But it had its moments. We saw shades of L-Block in Missingno, along with some legit surprises in Charizard and Old School Square. We saw a few epic matches, even if none of them really went down to the wire. For a few characters, we even got to see with certainty that they'd improved or declined. So all in all, CB8 was good, and I'm glad I followed it.

That said, I was hoping for more out of this year. At the end of last year, when Link crushed the bracket so hard the bonus match was between four versions of him, I remember wanting two things out of the next contest: 1) less Link, and 2) a format that would give us better reads on the characters. Well, we got just as much Link, and he did almost as good a job crushing the bracket as last year. We did get a new format, but I don't think it helped much as far as readings go. Even the adjusted x-stats are going to be filled with questions. That's a good thing in terms of unpredictability, but a bad thing if you're interested in where these characters really stand on this site, like I am. So the format change was a wash as far as I'm concerned.

As for next year, I'm not sure what I want this time. I still want Link gone, but it's obvious that others don't, and taking him out might undermine the contest just as much as leaving him in. None of the other options I can think of to spice things up excite me much, though. I could care less about the format at this point, and a different subject (like Fictional Characters or Best Genre Ever) isn't that appealing either. I guess I'll just have to wait and see what Bacon comes up with and go from there. Whatever it is, I hope he listens to the users again, even if they don't end up agreeing with me.

In case I don't post again, it's been real, and see you next year!

I think the top 32 from the X-stats (unadjusted of course, otherwise it wouldn't be fair) should get automatic bids into next years contest and should automatically be the top 4 seeds in each division. That way we won't get too many underseeding issues like Crono and Mega Man usually get (though SFF will mess that up a little) and we won't have ridiculous overseedings like Master Chief either. Unless we want that to mess up the casuals who will look at seedings as a determining factor, but I personally would rather not have debated first-round matches with top characters. Being at the top should be worth something in who you get to face, at least to start.
I don't know. That was my idea, though I think it would give MissingNo. a 1 seed, which might harm him more than help.

When I usually make a mock bracket (assuming it's 128 characters) I start off by automatically including all of the characters that made it to the third round. If you can make it that far you deserve to return. Should it be only a 64 character bracket I use the characters that reached the fourth round.

Just reading through the last tic and seeing people argue against Link's exclusion: I just don't get why.

I mean KP brought up his two defeats and how they've come down to two utterly extraordinary circumstances. The counterargument seemed to be that those extraordinary moments are worth keeping Link in for, that they prove his vulnerability...how exactly? Everything going against him (WW pic/KH) and the entire internet rising against him is vulnerability? Batman or Darth Vader would lose in similar circumstances.

Link can't be kept in these anymore. His dominance is now total and I really don't think he'll lose again. He's the face of a series which keeps churning out games. Snake is as good as done for new stuff now, FF7 can only receive a remake which might not even propel Cloud over him. Mario and Samus will always leech off Link. No new character could appeal to the range of ages Link can (eg, new Zelda players with TP, old ones with OoT and before).

Basically, a bracket where the winner is actually in doubt > waiting an average of four years for a perfect storm or freak internet bandwagon. I don't know about anyone else but I'm tired of seeing Link 50 times on the leaderboard. Cloud would still likely win, but he's vulnerable. Cloud losing only needs a slight tweak of circumstances. Link losing requires something biblical.

The stats topic should collaborate on a mock bracket during the off-season. Not a bracket made by one person like most mock brackets, but one where we all give input on what matches we want to see and set up the most exciting, potentially awesome bracket imaginable.

The stats topic should collaborate on a mock bracket during the off-season. Not a bracket made by one person like most mock brackets, but one where we all give input on what matches we want to see and set up the most exciting, potentially awesome bracket imaginable.

I wouldn't mind having this though maybe we should wait a couple of days just so we can cool off.
