GameFAQs Contests

Well, I've been gone because of basketball, but unless there was some serious rallying going on my theory of March Madness trumping this contests was bunk. Which I think says very good things for GameFAQs.
I also realized we probably left two characters off of our list of Star Wars near-elites or higher: Mace Windu and Obi-wan Kenobi.

Also seems Sonic will end up behind quite a lot of people.

And his sntire division will look like crap as well.

It's not really Sonic's fault, IMO. He never lost his strength mainly because of the Link voters and the night vote Link was having.

Eh. Shadow would have looked a lot worse if it wasn't a day match, and Zidane would have looked a little better against Ike. Plus I think Shadow just gets too many anti-votes to beat anyone remotely noteworthy.

I'd rather see Link and Cloud "for old times sake". Snake isn't going to win, Cloud isn't going to win. So like I said, for old time's sake I'd rather see the Link and Cloud showdown again.

Link lost .02% at what would have been a new match freeze zone, but at the next update he gained .04%! Just like Link, even when the match has been going for 12 hours.

I think the answer is that people really don't care about the same character winning, they just want Link to win. If Cloud wins even once, it outrages them, because they want Link to win every year.

Won't happen. People were shocked when a match wasn't put up even though on the front page it tells you these matches are 24 hours now. Not only to the majority have selective memory, but they can't be bothered to read either.

I dunno where this FF7 hate is coming from. As I said, I watched somebody play it on YouTube and it looked deserving of its praise. If it's overrated then Ocarina of Time is overrated, and Mario 64 is overrated...yeah, you get the point. Maybe people just regard it as being "that old RPG that hasn't aged well."

Just FYI At the Video Game Madness Tournaments held at Rotten Tomatoes, FF7 is effectively their equivalent of Halo on our site, for example, because "it's too strong on GameFAQs!" and "it hasn't aged well." Even Metal Gear Solid and GoldenEye go that way in their tourneys. And they're still very Nintendo heavy (heck, the Zelda series is the only series that so far houses more than one champion there), and they still don't like Halo and GTA as much as the outside world (on the other hand, they are definetely not as SSB-heavy as us. SSBM nearly lost to Silent Hill 2 once and lost to Mario Kart 64 in the first round the year afterwards, and SSBB lost cleanly to Counter-Strike in its debut). Their fan favorites are probably Psychonauts, Dragon Quest VIII, and Alpha Centauri, among others (SotN and Deus Ex to a bit of a lesser extent).

That is a lot different.But I think the problem is that people think that all FF VII characters do good.Cloud/Sephiroth are top 5 okay.Vincent/Tifa are near elite yeah.Cid/Aeris are mid-carders at best.So there are 6 characters.However from LOZ series there are only 3,1 of them is the strongest of all the other 2 are mid-carders.So people say< FF VII has many strong characters,LOZ has only 1 strong character so I vote for Link!>

Probably not too much, but this also out first 24 hour match we've had this contest and the only one on a weekday so it would have been nice if we had the update at the end of every hour.

Hypothetical: Zelda Wii is unveiled and is nearing release by the next contest. It looks great, there is loads of hype, Zelda has a great design, and it's confirmed that she'll be a very significant figure in the game.

Fact. Link has progressively improved on Cloud in every contest:

Granted, Crono was in the last poll...but considering how poorly he did and how FF7/CT have never shown very much overlap, it's hard to say how much he was really affected there. That's 7.73% and probably growing...which is over a percent worse than the difference between FF7/LoZ:OoT in BGE1 and BGE2 (6.51%), though Crono might be responsible for some of that difference. Somebody recently posted these polls too, which correlate with the above trends:

Outside of that, Cloud and Sephiroth have been underwhelming for most of the contest...and we've seen it coming but were too conformed to the notion of Clinkeroth being untouchable to give it serious thought for several rounds. Cloud got ~53% on Samus and Solid got ~53% on Sephiroth despite FF7 hitting the PSN, Dissidia helping several characters, and the recent release of FF13 -- GameFAQs's most hyped game since SSBB. The rest of new-Square hasn't looked that well, either, especially the KH-series...and remember that Cloud and Sephiroth were major selling points for KH1 and they boosted big-time from it in 2003.


If Cloud manages to shut down Solid's bandwagon tomorrow, Link is going to kill him, especially if this bandwagon is supposed to be anti-FF7 more than pro-MGS. Solid might impress and would probably lead Link for awhile as well...but Link will win his easiest championship yet if Cloud is the one who reaches the championship this year.

I still think Cloud has a very good shot of breaking 45% in the final. This performance on Mario is nice, but Link has no chance of matching what he got in the semifinal on Mario last year, and unless he gets a very good ASV, he won't match his performance in round 4 either. Both of those were either fair matches or slanted towards Mario (especially the round 4 match, since Mario was fighting for his life with Zack). Link losing a step this year still looks very reasonable, even likely- of course Cloud and Sephiroth lost a bigger step, but it's mitigated by Link not looking entirely on his game.

Again, I'm not sure why people expected Mario to do so well when he's had 7 matches against Link before and never broken 38% on him, and when the most recent matches (2008) had him below 35%. For that matter, I don't believe Mario has been at the level of Samus and Snake indirectly, either, since 2008. 54% on Charizard, even HG/SS Charizard (i.e. Mario is worth 58% on Bowser), doesn't indicate Samus or especially Snake levels of strength to me.

Link is a ****ing beast. His closest competition is now nowhere close to him.

The only thing I can see taking Link down is another huge joke rally for an already strong character like Missingno, and even then I don't think Missingno would've pulled it off if he tried it this year. In a four-way environment, sure, but not in 1v1.

Frankly, the only way Link doesn't win the next few contests is if he's not actually in them. And considering how Nintendo mascots will always be relevant while characters like Cloud, Sephiroth, and even Snake will slowly fade away, I don't think Link will ever again be challenged by anyone.
