...And Sephiroth's not even the one with a reputation to win these tournaments. He's not the #1 target for rampant hatred.

I know you've been gone, but trust me, he is. People always complain on the board about how Cloud and Seph always win.

And the vast majority of casual voters do not check the results to see "whether Snake has a chance in hell" of an upset before voting. Voters generally don't have the opportunity to spontaneously reward Snake for a better than expected performance.

That's exactly what happened in 2008.

And yes, this year I think Snake is stronger than Sephiroth but it's only because GameFAQs has decided to get creative with its voting... solely against Final Fantasy VII.

Next year if we get this match again with 24 hour matches(please keep it at 12), I might take Sephiroth.

Sephiroth's from FFVII. Yes, he is.

Sephiroth won all of a villain contest and Cloud won way back in 2K3, before thousands upon thousands of this site's casual voters were likely even involved.
To the vast majority of the GameFAQs viewing public -- i.e., not the hardcore B8 crowd -- Link has just about always won.

I know it's easy to assume B8 is really the summation of GameFAQs and that all 80,000-someodd voters apparently congregate and are represented here, but seriously, we're nowhere near the tip of the iceberg.

You'll take Sephiroth if the match only lasts for one hour! Don't kid yourself!

Snake is no doubt stronger. Sephiroth cannot turn this 5000 vote lead in 12 more hours, all he can do is make the percentage closer, and probably the lead too. And if anti-votes are there, it's part of Sephiroth's inherent strength.

48 hours or longer matches is a fun thing to think about, that's all.

The best part about this result, is that this contest's x-stats are nearly useless. We've seen:

Mario uncharacteristically strong
Link uncharacteristically meh
Sonic characteristically crappy
A completely joke-influencedly unreliable Crono/Yoshi
Mega Man uncharacteristically strong
Cloud/Seph falling off the map
Snake looking really meh, then beating the crap out of Sephiroth
Samus really looking good against Cloud, lining up a potentially great Snake/Samus/Mario triad
Our near elites all with wonky-assed performances that don't make sense meaning our whole non-NN upper tier is up in the air still
Extremely inflated Pikachu/Charizard/Missigno results

If we get another 1v1 next year, it has the potential to be the best bracket yet

That's exactly what happened in 2008.

No, you see, the vast majority of GameFAQs voters realize this is a fictional game contest and really don't think about the results as 10% as important as we do. They just vote for the character they like.

Subsequently, they don't bother checking the results before voting.

They don't give a damn about the strategy of voting or the theoretical importance of voting and how it may shift the paradigm. Even L-Block only happened after it proved strong enough to win a few matches -- the effect picked up after initial results had concluded and everyone collectively realized everyone else liked L-Block enough to make crazy stuff happen.

And that's just the thing: the antivoting or 'joke voting' or bandwagon effect can't start until after a character exceeds expectations at least once of his own accord. The first time's legit. It's every subsequent day and every subsequent vote that's skewered, as everyone's in awe at the results that were reported after their vote was already counted.

Votals are slightly ahead of Samus/Cloud right now, for the record.
