Yeah I have to agree that Sephiroth should get his own game sometime. Bowser should as well (oh wait, hasn't he already? I lost track).

Pity vote? More like voting for the 2010 champion in the most glorious upset in contest history!

And I love these pics because half of them are Toon Link! I'm now predicting Mario to quadruple Link rather than merely triple him!

Analysis

With the introduction of the semi-finals matches now last 24 hours instead of 12 hours. Last round we had Link laughing at Sonic’s rebound while Mario looked shaky against a Charizard that had everything going for him. As much as the board wants to see an upset the only thing that I want to see in this match is how high the vote totals will reach.

Despite looking a little slow at the beginning Link quickly showed why he is the most dominant force in the contest and with how Cloud and Sephiroth taking a drop Link may remain unchallenged for years to come or until another character gets a perfect storm. Some people are hyping that Mario has a chance at breaking 40%, but unless people start to anti-vote Link en masses I don’t think that is going to happen.

Link SFF Mario would be pretty sad, but the possibility is there. It feels weird that I only have to write one analysis today, but I guess the slower paced 24 hour matches will have to do. With the way the contest is shaping up the x-stats are going to be more useless than the four-ways or so many people think. Just because some results don’t go the way we expected doesn’t mean that the stats will be terrible in the next contest, just as long as we exclude SFF and stuff.

Sephiroth is doing pretty well now. In a 24-hour match (i.e. the poll was held open until noon tomorrow) he might reach 49%. Make it a 48 hour match, and he probably wins.

Well, Sephiroth has gone from getting 45% early in the match to going even now. As the night goes on, you figure he would continue improving, and he'd get 55%+ in the FFVII Total Domination Zone. Tomorrow morning Snake would have trouble doing better than he's doing now, that is, adding ot the lead, same with the DSV. Sephiroth probably continues the cuts with the ASV, making more headway than with the dead zone due to more votes, and then he gets another night vote to continue cutting.

It's fun to think about. I think as late as 2007, Cloud might have had a chance at beating Link in a 1-week long poll.

Sephiroth is going to have a hard time flipping Snake's percent in Europe, even if he does comeback it doesn't mean much when North America is giving Snake such an easy win.

Also Metal Gear is liked in Europe unlike Samus.

Ah, you know it's funny, these people, they go to sleep. They think everything's fine, everything's good... They wake up the next day and they're on fire.

It hasn't been that way though. Cloud and Sephiroth were always closer to Link than they were to the rest of the pack, until this contest has shown otherwise.

Also, to all those yammering about how Sephiroth "would have won this match if not for the damned antivotes / anger over Samus losing / whatevs."

The margin is over five thousand votes now.

That means that you'd have to believe 2501 people who voted for Snake would have voted for Sephiroth if not for some blind seething anti-FFVII or pro-Samus rage. And that's just for Sephiroth to win by a 50.01% margin against he character most expected him to easily garner 52% against.

...And Sephiroth's not even the one with a reputation to win these tournaments. He's not the #1 target for rampant hatred.

And the vast majority of casual voters do not check the results to see "whether Snake has a chance in hell" of an upset before voting. Voters generally don't have the opportunity to spontaneously reward Snake for a better than expected performance.

...Give it up, already. My contention is Snake is legitimately stronger than Sephiroth now, and insofar as antivoting or whatever you want to accuse may have been a factor, it didn't influence the match enough to stop Snake from winning. Sure, you could argue Snake might have won by a narrower 3000 vote margin instead of 5000 or something. But that doesn't change the fact that Snake's win has wiped out your precious Clinkeroth.

You know, I think some people are going to think this is Link's first match tomorrow since this is the first time he'll be seen after 12 P.M. this year.

Snake is actually doing less than half a percent better in North America than Europe. Surprising, definitely, and noteworthy in itself. It has little bearing on what would happen in a 24 or 48 hour match though. Sephiroth would make that closer by increasing his percentage everywhere, not by weighting certain areas more.
