Given how much Cloud is crushing with the day vote against someone much stronger than Snake, Sephiroth should be fine. Seph gets the full benefit of the FF7 day vote and MGS being bad at night.

I wouldn't bet on Galaxy 2 having a whole lot of hype here. It's currently Gametrailers' 2nd most anticipated game, but that was a list that had Final Fantasy XIII at 10th. Lol.

Personally this match proves to me that Mario is stronger than Cloud now, because I don't believe the jibber-jabber about Samus being stronger than Mario indirectly. I think Mario should be a good deal stronger actually.

I'd definetely pick Snake over Samus and Cloud over Sephiroth. Snake > Sephiroth is looking better and better...

About that thing with Kojima saying that Snake's story is done, well, I believe Super Metroid was meant to be the last Metroid game, no?

I'll be gone for some time in a few minutes to study for tomorrow's exam. Shame I can't get to Snake/Sephy until about 3 hours before it's over then.

Yeah, Snake's story is over. Kojima has said it more than once.

Probably. But no matter how strong you are, you need new games. Not spinoffs, not cameos. Games. At this point Snake's next boost would probably be Smash 4, and that's years away.

Look at Chrono Trigger and FF7. They've lost a step, a huge one in CT's case.

Yeah, FFVII's been slowly falling since 2003. So slowly that between any 2 given years, we could usually dismiss it as imperceptible and say they stayed the same, but it's there, and since 2008 it may have accelerated.

Yeah, that was meant for LMS. Metroid can technically go on forever because it's not even close to being story driven.

I put Snake on the bottom rung of gaining any more strength because without any new games (and he's the only one of the NN that's pretty much confirmed to not get any), he must rely on Smash Bros. He's not exactly a "lock" for the next game either since this time was a cameo appearance and he's not really a Nintendo character. I wouldn't be shocked if he wasn't in Smash 4 at all.

The FF7 crew still have the FF7 Compilation to help them. There's obviously always the chance we see a remake as well, or a sequel. Crono can hold on to those dim hopes Square revives the Chrono series as well. Outside of Smash, Snake will need remakes of his old Metal Gear games (or upgraded ports) to have any chance of getting stronger than 2008.

N9 being broken, Ryu finally lost his 40% streak, character from other series breaking 60% on FF7 character, etc.

Clinkeroth being untouchable and unbeatable in 1vs1 since 2003 is another traditional thing that might be broken today, sad but true.

There's actually something I've been pondering in general about the VG world. What exactly will happen to older games with huge fanbases (see FFVII)? It's obvious that the technology of today can produce effects lightyears ahead of what was possible even in the late nineties, and presumably it will only become easier in future generations to reach them. Does that mean, then, that we can expect lots of remakes of early 3D (or, possibly, earlier) games that sold well in their day in the next 20-30 years? Presumably they would be a near surefire bet to sell well, both amongst the nostalgic older crowd and those who'd never gone back to them.

But then again, and this is a much more GameFAQs specific question, why is it taking so long for games released not just ~12 years old as with OoT and FFVII, but over 15 years old in the case of CT and LTTP (I'll ignore the 2D Marios since they're played by near-everyone on this site anyway) to properly decline in popularity? It can't be purely franchise voting, since, for example, Wind Waker and <insert FF here> don't have close to the popularity of OoT/FFVII. Do games today just not leave the same connection with the player as they used to? Are gamers today just more critical of what they play? Are games today just not getting enough of a playership to acquire the mass popularity of those gone before? Or are games just worse? It puzzles me. :D

I think the console-race breaking into three systems and there being two handheld-systems instead of one probably affects just how much a game can mean around here anymore. It's great for gaming in general, but Mario now isn't the same as Mario in the N64-era...and that one wasn't the same as Mario in the NES-era.

This match is suggesting that Samus would be on Sephiroth's level at the very least, and I don't believe that she is indirectly stronger than Mario at all. Then again, I know that Samus draws most of her power from a source which I consider to be overrated on this site (though somewhat underrated most everywhere else), while Mario has to take a considerable amount of strength from older games.

So yeah, Mario > Sephiroth, better set that up next contest.

It's a combination of a lot of things you said, I think. But also, remember that the majority (a big majority the last time the poll was held) started gaming on the SNES/Genesis or earlier. On the other hand, the percentage of voters who started on the PS2/Xbox/GC or later is still very very small. The N64/PS1 generation has now become the "power" generation on Gamefaqs, with regards to contests, since it can put up huge margins for its games against older games, whereas older generations have also played N64/PS1 games and will vote for them too.

So Cloud won't break 53%, and considering Cloud should be 3+ points ahead of Sephiroth and Snake~=Samus, Sephiroth is already looking in trouble even without any bandwagoning whatsoever. And Missingno and Tifa are looking legit.

I'd still favor Sephiroth. However...considering the fact that if this match is in any way close at the end, Snake should have no problems at all getting 500+ votes if he needs it. And that's a lot in a 12 hour match. It's actually tough not to favor Snake here.

Mario? Beat Sephiroth? Not a chance. Sephiroth is like Mario's worst nightmare, contest-wise.

Why? Mario should have an even easier time rallying against Sephiroth than Snake. And by next contest Sephiroth will have dropped off another marginal amount most likely. Depending on what happens today Mario could be the favorite.

Also if Snake rallies to beat Sephiroth, man, that's going to be just like the Battle Royal all over again.

Yeah, I'm getting a Mario/Seph 2005 and a Samus/Snake 2006 feeling (no coincidence that a lot of us favored Snake both times after a bad performance against Tifa by the other!).
