Ah,
so you think it's possible Link SFFs Sonic? I suppose it's possible.
I'm not entirely convinced that the overlap causes SFF, but we'll see!

I mentioned this in my writeup! I don't know about "SFF" as that implies a wicked beatdown, but I've never trusted a single Nintendo/Sonic match ever since Mario/Shadow. --- xyzzy |

think Sonic has less Nintendo overlap than Mega Man X, let alone Mega
Man. Couple that with anti-votes and a Sonic 4 re-boost and Sonic may
beat Mario to be the third character to hit 40% on Link. |

got a bandwagon effect after the first day because he ended up getting
semi-close to Sephiroth, but that shouldn't have mattered on the first

right, Snake's bandwagon effect would have been from the Mega Man match
through the final. there was nothing particularly noteworthy about the

the only thing that people could point to and say Snake "collapses"
against Nintendo are Snake/Yoshi, Snake/Samus, and Snake/Pikachu. Two
of those happened in the sprite round, and Samus SFFing Snake is lawl. --- Squall Leonhart is the worst Final Fantasy character ever created. |

said, I don't think Snake is very much Nintendo anymore. at one point
he was front and center, but as Brawl has become less and less
relevant, Snake being in Brawl means less and less. --- xyzzy |

The
'Snake collapses against Nintendo' thing came about when Snake was
expected by nearly everyone to cruise over Samus in the finals of the
2k6 bracket after stomping Sonic and MM, and didn't. People were high up on Snake and the time and really wanted to see him win in the finals (and it looked very possible after his dominance). Plus Samus had had some very underwhelming female bracket performances. Problem with that is that Samus beat Sonic worse than he did in 2k4, and the female bracket ended up being worth crap, so yeah. Shouldn't really have been the favorite, but he was, so people came up with 'Samus sapped his Brawl support'. dunno. If you look at Samus/Sonic 2004 and Snake/Sonic 2006, you get
around what Samus/Snake got. I suppose it's possible 2006 Sonic is
stronger than 2004 Sonic, but I doubt it's by much. People expected
Snake to win after 55% on Mega Man and Sonic as opposed to 55% on
Zelda, but when that happened and we ended up with something that made
no sense (Tifa and Zelda > Sonic, Mega Man, and Crono), I think

2006 is crazy in general, but it's made more crazy by the idea of Samus
beating Snake when, by any reasonable projection, she should have lost

whenever something happens that doesn't make sense, we're all out to
make up some factor to explain it. We're going to end up with some
nonsensical stuff in the stats this year, too, but there isn't gonna be

hey,
I've argued against the Zero Suit Samus thing for years and here we are
today with Tifa doing it again without any good excuse! but I dunno, the Brawl thing makes sense to me. do you remember how huge Brawl was in 2006? its hype alone let it get like 38% on the entire Mario series. I was thinking about this while driving the other day -- is Pokemon now the 4th strongest series on this site? it has to be, right? --- xyzzy |

think Sonic will beat MMX's percentage. Link and Sonic don't generally
share games, genres, systems, design, or history. Sonic 2 wasn't really
SFF'd by SMW, Sonic wasn't bothered much by SMW and/or SMB3, and Sonic
3 bombing against SM/SMK was probably more of Sonic 3 sucking than them
overlapping. Also, if Sonic IS Nintendo-based, I don't feel so bad
about him standing up to Link after MMX did well enough and Sonic beat
both Kirby and Ganondorf with room to spare this contest. Link's clearly above Kirby and Ganon in Nintendo's totem-pole, but if Sonic's even in that category then he's proven once again he can hold his own now that we're back to one-on-one matches. --- Picking Auron > Squall was dumb, but not as dumb as thinking I could beat Leonhart! I
don't think Pokemon's in the top five biggest series. It very well
could be, but there's something worth asking again: is Pokemon RBY
bigger than the rest of the Pokemon series combined? GS got ~47% on MGS
while RBY got ~53% with LoZ:OoT in the poll. DP lost easily to SMG and
I don't think any other Pokemon-game is expected to be strong. Looking
at the Character Battles, every RBY-Pokemon has done well and Red would
probably beat any other Pokemon we've seen thus far too. I know a lot of RBY-fans would support the Pokemon-series, but I don't think a lot of them would against other series with multiple incredibly loved games and I wonder how big the rest of the Pokemon fanbase is. I'm definitely taking the SSB-series and probably the MGS-series over the Pokemon-series. I'd also enjoy a Metroid-rematch, though not even Other M would let the series go 2-0 against Pokemon. --- Picking Auron > Squall was dumb, but not as dumb as thinking I could beat Leonhart! Match CXXI: (1) Link vs. (1) Sonic the Hedgehog Last Round Link – 71.13% Luigi – 28.87% Sonic the Hedgehog – 54.61% Kirby – 45.39% Analysis As much as some people wanted to see a Mario/Sonic match that is not going to happen with Link in the way. An interesting fact is that this is the first contest in which Mario and Sonic are on the same half of the bracket. Anyway this is the match where we’ll see whether it was Sonic rebounding from his terrible performances in previous contests or whether Sonic was lucky in terms of bracket placement in that he didn’t run into a stronger character. Sonic’s 35% against Sephiroth last contest was pretty terrible which suggests that Link has a chance at breaking 70% should Sonic be as weak as he was in the previous contest. After watching Sonic go through this division I do feel that Sonic has rebounded a bit and given that this is a night match which means like against Ganondorf Sonic gets the support of Europe while Asia’s hate weakens Link. Unless some kind of SFF occurs I think Sonic has a great chance at avoiding getting doubled. This contest hating blowouts and Zelda characters not performing up to par probably helps Sonic’s case.
