IDK. I think people need to also consider the idea that Tifa is legitimately strong, and that she just isn't a big blowout machine.

Fine, but why did she only manage 38% and 33% against Sephiroth last year? You'd think she could have TRIED to match this performance, at least in the meaningless first round with no competition. I find it almost impossible that Seph could have legitimately suffered a drop in raw strength (like, say, the Kingdom Hearts guys have) while Tifa escapes smelling like roses. How does that make sense? He's getting anti-voted.

You do realize a good portion of Cloud and Sephiroth's strength comes from the Kingdom Hearts boost?

Seph has been getting anti-voted all contest. So have Link and Cloud. There's clearly some backlash here.

The only shocker is that Missigno didn't beat him. I thought for sure he was going to get to Snake when he beat Crono in the first round.

Seph is pretty much the 'face' of the anti-vote sentiment so far. He's nearly universally disliked.

For a guy who's universally disliked, he sure is awful... liked.

Yoblazer you are talking about a 4 way poll where Tifa isn't a fan of casuals and she has to compete with Seph. Obviously she isn't going to do as well there as in a 1v1 situation. Especially where some people that would prefer Tifa to Sephiroth have other choices in the poll.

How ironic would it be if Missingno supporters took this contest more seriously than anyone else?

I think this was already fairly obvious. Most people just vote for their favorite, they don't become angry that Link and Cloud always win and try to find someone who can dethrone them. Further, most people don't rally.

I wouldn't say dismiss them entirely, but a 1 on 1 poll will be far more mathematically accurate when comparing two characters. You don't need a doctorate in mathematics to figure out 1 + 1 = 2 is easier than 2 + 2x = y. Too many variables in 4ways to translate into 1v1 results transitively.

Well technically speaking, our most commonly used 4-way extrapolation method produces inconsistent result within the same match. Like, Duke got 39.5% on Zack, but if you extrapolate them through Link in the very same match, Duke only gets like 36% or something.

And there's the other problem. 4ways aren't consistent from day to day, let alone year to year.

I think Link has suffered a minor drop this year due to favorite anti-votes, but I think Cloud and Sephiroth are not only getting more anti-votes than ever, but that FF7 is just getting too old. They're slowly declining in strength, and I think will continue to do so. If they don't get upset this year, they'll be ripe to get upset by Mario/Samus/Snake/Joke next contest.

Btw on 4-way stats, they've been pretty accurate a number of times if you have a clue as to what you're doing and actually use logic. I have no idea Ulti why you're so obsessed with bashing them. No one treats them like gospel or anything, pretty much everyone uses them with a grain of salt - but they have been useful. Far more useful than I think any of us expected, especially early in the contest. Pretty much none of the real stats regs gave them credit pre-contest, and most of us were taken aback when they proved surprisingly accurate time and again.

From: charmander6000 | #1959
Didn't they thrash GameSpot when Bub & Bob lost?

They laugh because people care so much yet it seems that they are the ones that care the most.

This has always been the case. No one works harder to support their guys than joke people. The stuffing/rallying takes effort - something very few characters inspire.

I agree with this. Characters as strong as Sephiroth don't just fall off the face of the Earth like that, and certainly not without Tifa falling too.

If it is anti-votes directed against an obvious winner, as in the Villains Contest, the nice thing for Sephiroth is that anti-votes are worth less and less as you get closer to an even match. The reason is that the vast majority of people who would anti-vote Sephiroth against Snake would vote Snake over Sephiroth anyway, whereas a lot of people who are anti-voting Seph today may be indifferent between him and Tifa normally (i.e. they hate everything from FFVII) or even favor Sephiroth (i.e. there are characters they'd vote Sephiroth over but not Tifa normally, but because they know Seph will win they vote for Tifa to make it closer).

Sephiroth/Snake is big. I can still see Sephiroth doing to Snake here what he did to Mario in 2005, though I'll probably predict more like 52% and Snake has a great chance at winning.

This exactly.

I'm gonna give Snake a chance - I wasn't before - after this. I didn't expect Missingno backlash to be quite so extreme, either that or this is a hefty case of rSFF. But I can still see Seph pulling out a 55-45 job far more than I can see Snake doing the same thing to him. Seph is almost certainly intrinsically stronger, but like in 2008 there might just be a perfect storm for Snakey to do something shocking. Cloud/Samus taking place immediately before might even affect things.

This is just shaping up to be like Snake/MM from 2006. MM was the heavy favorite and most people were like "Man, this upset has 0% of happening, remember how MM trashed Snake the last time they met" Snake then went on to do well in most of his matches while MM/Sephy looked kinda unimpressive and controversial in their matches. Next we have people trying to convince everyone that MM/Sephy weren't unimpressive, KH2 Sora/ Tifa might just be hanging around Snake's strength.

Then Snake/MM happened, and i guess you already know what happened then. IMHO, Sephiroth is still the slight favorite going into the match but i would be very surprised if Snake doesn't give him one hell of a fight with the massive bandwagon/rally/momentum and Missingno backlash.

Okay I'm not a math major, so someone like you or Guy or Dabu needs to explain this to me.

Transitivity: Mathematics: noting a relation in which one element in relation to a second element and the second in relation to a third element implies the first element is in relation to the third element, as the relation “less than or equal to.”
Linearity: Mathematics: a. consisting of, involving, or describable by terms of the first degree. b. having the same effect on a sum as on each of the summands: a linear operation.

These look exactly the same to me -- that is, they suggest an A > B > C relationship in math.

Transivity means A>B>C. Non-transitive Missingno for instance would imply Yoshi beats Sephiroth.

The only opportunity for something to be non-transitive would be two back to back very close matches where minor fluctuations could alter things - say Starcraft, if the matches were even closer. Or, some day/night very close match scenario where the time of day affected things; but I don't know if that scenario would really "count", because it's not a fair comparison.

Linearity is just the multiplication we use. x-stats. A gets 60% on B, B got 60% on C, so A gets 68% on C.
