DMC: Sells a lot
DMC2: DMC was great, so must this! Sells even more
DMC3: DMC2 sucked, I'm skeptical. Sells less

Also, to use another example: FFVII --> FFVIII --> FFIX

FFVIII outsold FFVII for a while, if I'm not mistaken, though FFVII eventually overtook it, and FFIX's sales tanked. Of course, there are reasons for FFIX's sales not to be as good other than that, but I don't deny it was a contributing factor due to the widespread feeling that FFVIII was a disappointment.

Those games sell more because of their predecessors (same thing happened with MGS2). It's the next game in the series that will suffer (like MGS3).

That reminds me of the PoP trilogy. The first one is super special awesome, and the second one was just aaaargh. It like that girlfriend you think is funny and cute and witty, but when your friend sees her she's drunk and throwing up on his shirt. So by the time the third game comes, they're gunshy. "No wait!" you yell "She's really cool, I'm serious!" to no avail.

Well from what I remember, 2 was released in the middle of a lull while 3 was released in 2004. 2k4 had San Andreas, Halo 2, Metroid Prime 2...yeah. MGS3 got a little lost in the shuffle.

I haven't done the numbers, but I highly doubt this. Falcon didn't beat Riku by much, and he did it in a favorable timeframe.

Also, kinda interesting that Cloud's doing less than 1% worse in the U.S. Usually FFVII does noticeably worse in the U.S. compared to everywhere else.

I said this before, but I think it's possible Ryu has gone down since the contest began. Tatsunoko vs Capcom was the top Wii game for awhile I think, and it came out near the beginning of the contest. Now it is number 8 among Wii games and almost out of the top 100. It was once #6 overall. He does still have the SSFIV games to keep him a little bit boosted/

Maybe I'm just a huge Dante fanboy, but I would take Dante if that match were held today. It's impressive he was even close considering he's had nothing in the past 2 years, not even news about a new game. I think Ryu might even be confortably below Dante in the same situation.

I'm a big Squall fan, but I don't see any reason for this match to go differently from the 2k6 one. You've got Brawl and MGS4 against...Dissidia and FFXIII visitors? Random weirdness like the two Samus/Zelda matches is about all there is to rely on I think.

KrahenProphet and Nintendo cleaned me out in the Guru Contest.

The problem is that FFVIII is a game that has massive longevity, nostalgia, and he has KH appearances to go with Dissidia and KH3 looming I would guess.

Snake peaked in 2006, and he benefited by the 4 way style because he's got a more hardcore fanbase. 12 hours might also benefit him -- but I wouldn't be surprised if he came out of this looking weak. I mean honestly, picture or not, he only got 55% on Pikachu.

Pretty excited for tonight's match; we have not only two awesome characters but this basically represents Snake's shot to impress after pretty much everyone has written him off next round. The fact that he's got such a tall order only makes it more worthy of anticipation.

As for me, I'm looking for three things tonight in order to be convinced that the upset is happening (yes, even I can be dissuaded with appropriate evidence... believe aside):

1. Snake exceeding his 12 hour 2k6 percentage on Squall (58.04%). It's anti-BlowoutFAQs, but if Snake is significantly stronger he should still be able to surpass his old mark. Much less would be like a death knell; while 60%+ puts him in freakin' great shape.
2. Snake's board vote. Snake/Squall 2k6 was pretty much Snake running out of the gates and falling not only all day, but all through the night as well. That's how ridiculously powerful his board vote used to be. Seph's antivotes are not enough; Snake needs to still demonstrate enough die hard loyalty in his own right to really rack up the score. If he can't bring the early pain this time against Squall, there's little reason he'll have enough juice for Sephy.
3. How hyped and riled people get over the result in general. We're running out of upset opportunities, and if Cloud beats Samus as expected Snake is the last chance. People have to be determined to not let this become another Seph/Mario II.

...hmm, that actually seems like much more of a tall order when explicitly put into words. Oh well. An hour and a half left!

I think Snake will beat his 2006 mark, but merely beating the 58% he got then is not good enough. Snake was stronger in 2008 than 2006, and even that Snake looked a fair amount weaker than Sephiroth (since Cloud got 56% on him in their most fair match). I believe that Cloud and Sephiroth have fallen off a bit this year, and the 12-hour format helps Snake (not the day match, but the match being only 12 hours). Nonetheless, Snake really needs to be at his 2008 level to have a chance.

I don't think 2k8 Snake would be able to go *too* much higher than 58%. I'm serious about the anti-blowout thing. 58% on Squall today is worth more comparatively than 58% on Squall four years ago imho, especially since the guy seems to age like wine in terms of contest strength.

Squall hasn't impressed me this contest. I'm of the opinion that all the characters who benefitted a lot from KH2 in 2006 may have regressed a bit since then. I'm not really sold on Anti-BlowoutFAQS, at least not in this kind of match- 60/40 is not a blowout except by Ulti standards.

But yeah, seriously, I'm just detailing what Snake needs for his loyal devotee to keep the faith (and if he doesn't have that then the miracle never happen, truly). I gave him passes ahead of time for Protoman, Fox, and Pikachu (obviously), putting all my faith into this match giving him a chance to impress. No more excuses! Like Mario/DK, Mega Man/Yoshi*, and so many other matches beforehand that got their victors back into the game, it's time to leave all excuses behind!
