It's
the first time a Pokemon's gotten to the Elite 8, but that's a little

That
was the first contest, though. It kinda isn't the same since they were
there straight from the beginning and EVERYONE was a newcomer.
Newcomers going to the Elite-8 nowadays is much more impressive since

Well,
Vincent and Charizard managed to get into the Elite Eight in divisions
without Noble Niners in them, so in a sense, they got lucky, too. --- Squall Leonhart is the worst Final Fantasy character ever created. |

After seeing Balthier, she could very well be a low-midcarder, for all we know (I think she'll be an upper-midcarder though). Not to mention, she has to avoid being in the same divsion as Link, Mario, Samus, and especially Cloud and Sephiroth. If she isn't a near-elite (doubt she will be), you can add 10 other characters to that mix (Sonic, MM, MMX, Squall, Auron, Vincent, Tifa, Charizard, Crono, the joke character of 2011). Basically, her division next year needs to be like the Heart Division. It helps if she's a 1-seed too to avoid the (near-)elites early on. --- The Gamer In Me My Signature's broken, just like your front door. |

Eh,
it's not the same to me. Pikachu, L-Block, Zack, MMX, and Cube got to
the quarterfinals while not even finishing 1st in every match, so that

Lightning
being about this years strength is he absolute floor... her peak is
about Squall/Vincent level. I think she'll be closer to the latter

It's
too early to tell how Lightning'll do next year, I think. FF13's pretty
popular right now, but there's also a huge backlash brewing against it.
If the backlash holds out, Lightning could easily slip to sub-Balthier
levels. If it dies down, she could be the next Squall. |

Lightning
has an awesome design, is from a hugely popular game, and is generally

success. I've seen plenty of FFXIII rants from all over the web, not just this board. Check the low end of Metacritic, for starters. |

Yeah,
but even with the hype, I really, really, really doubt Lightning could
drop down to Balthier levels. FFXIII is the kind of game that's up this

be able to reach the Square near-elite level. She's the protagonist of
FFXIII, a very big game, and she has a great, appealing, character

The
backlash seems confined to outside of gamefaqs borders though, inside
the mainland territory, even those who say a few negative things
clearly like the game enough to power through it as fast as possible. Lightning is a midcarder at the very least. --- Also Lightning's hair>that ass witch's. |

Yeah
on all accounts FFXIII is pretty much a worldwide success. Plus it's on
X-Box 360. Lightning might become even more popular than Squall and co.

FFX cast started off pretty decently with barely what, a year's worth
of nostalgia, nine years down the road sure they might have stronger

being
on 360 doesn't inspire confidence at all, look at how strong other
multiplatformers are, sure she might be stronger than Altair, but right
now that isn't worth much after the beating Vivi dished out. Heck now that it turns out that Kratos is pretty darn strong you might think it helps to be exclusive because it could make your fanbase that much more hardcore, they care more about the fact that your only available on their platform. --- Shakes Fist! |

She's already at Rikku's level. There's no reason to believe now that she actually has a game that she won't increase. She'll increase a bit, but her game will be a year old by the time the next contest rolls around. Unless it's a completely ground-breaking game, she won't be as strong as you guys are predicting her. A character is always strongest when they're getting a new game shortly or the game has just came out. She'd be stronger today because of the game being new, but in a year she'd either be forgotten (if the game becomes hated like FF12) or she'll just stick around in the middle of the pack. --- Good Times, Great Memories |

which opened them up to a new audience (a kiddy audience, if you will). That's a good point for Squall, but Auron didn't have Kingdom Hearts until 2006. And Lightning could always show up in KH3! |

did boost a lot from KH2 though. That's part of the reason he lost so
