How does strength make you legit? I thought you meant legit as in terms of characters. Hmm... let me be more clear. Something about Charizard feels like he could come back in the contest next year and the year after and the year after and keep turning out similar strong results. Not like the illegitimate power of MissingNo and even the inconsistency of Pikachu. Of course this is speculation because all of it has yet to been seen but I get that feeling about Charizard. --- KB |

Samus
had 2/3 of the brackets. Don't recall Samus supporters calling Mario
supporters crazy though. It was quite friendly until after the match
when it ripped open a torrent of recriminations about the x-stats and
people's slavish obedience to them. Yeah, aside from EC I don't think many Samus-supporters were super-confident, especially once the contest started. The match would have been little more than an epic match gone haywire if Ulti hadn't only started but parroted "LOL X-STATS" as soon as it happened; that's where it got to where people were more into shaming each other than enjoying the contest and why none of us really like talking about the match anymore. I think all of us had been VERY wrong at least once before (Samus > Mario and SMG > SSBB come to mind for me!)...but for a match so many people wanted to see and weren't certain about, there was an active campaign like we haven't seen since condemning anybody who took the wrong side. And Samus-supporters still had good logic going into the 2005-contest, but I'm not in the mood to argue it. --- Picking Auron > Squall was dumb, but not as dumb as thinking I could beat Leonhart! 4-ways
and a year outside the main bracket made us forget IT'S FRIGGIN' MARIO!
Why did we ever forget about our obvious #4 character and SFF King? I think there's something special about the upset over Mario that we all want to see. We all sort of expect Mario to be in the position that Link is always in. Mario is the king of gaming. And we all want to see, just once, for someone to take over for him. That's part of the reason Mario/Crono was so amazing the first three times. But Crono has fallen ever since he defeated Mario and now we're looking for someone else to step up and take the place he used to have. We all found stats that could put Mega Man there, because we really want to see Mario challenged. We know Link kills him, we know Sephy (and presumably therefore also Cloud) kills him, we just want to see someone come up and challenge Mario for the #4 spot. |

don't think Snake has a shot either. I think the SFF is the exact same
as we always see when someone takes on Mario. Sonic would be
interesting and probably couldn't beat Mario, but he could probably
keep it a lot closer than any of the Nintendo characters. Though if Crono's numbers through MissingNo. and Sephiroth are anywhere near legit, then Mario/Crono V could be epic once again. |

It's
the order in which I think they perform against Mario, beating him or
not. Crono could not beat Mario anymore, but he wouldn't be SFFed as
badly as those other 3 would be. Snake wouldn't be SFFed at all and is
naturally stronger than Crono now. --- :> |

Remember,
a lot of Snake's recent strength increase is from Brawl, and Mario's
SFF makes that boost worthless. So unless you take 2005 Snake > 2010
Crono (which could be legit, but MissingNo. sure made 2010 Crono look
strong against Sephiroth), then you have to switch the two. |

1. Crono has suffered a precipitous drop since 2005. He outperformed Snake against Mario that year by a little under 3.5%. 2. Snake has gotten MGS4 since 2005. His boost is not all SSB; the disparity in his performances between 2k6 and 2k8 validate this. 3. It's impossible to SFF everything from a character. Samus got reamed with the SFF hammer against Mario and still came out with 40% of the vote. Even if SSB was the only thing Snake had to his name, he would still muster votes against Mario. Missingno.
has nothing to do with anything. If it's part of the x-stats this year,
well then it basically immediately inflates Crono and Yoshi higher than
they deserve to be. Joke strength is too unreliable to count on, at
least viewing it from a character to character basis. Like I said a
while ago, the only true thing from Missingno. is Sephiroth > Crono

The
fact that Mr. Snake even managed to get 2nd place in the finals of last
contest with Link as the big man in the match is perhaps the perfect
proof that Snake doesn't get Nintendo SFFd so badly anymore. But then again it might also be proof that bandwagoning resists SFF. |

If
Snake could be boosted greatly based on SSBB/MGS4 trailer/hype in 2006,
Lightning should have no problem benefiting from the FF13 trailer/hype
even when her game wasn't released in most part of the world. As for whether she could hang around with near elites like Squall/Vincent/Auron, we shall see next year. --- Snake's Mission "To make it to the finals for the fourth consecutive times" |
