I'd be for a list of "near elites" to be current, not outdated things. Having WCC on that list would be no better than sticking Magus on it too.

I agree, but with the definition "that has come at, near or even ahead of Noble Nine characters in the past," they need to be included. That's why I'm in favor of changing the wording.

WCC has never been a near-elite- the best he ever did was beat Megaman with Zero in the poll, and it didn't look like this year's Mario-challenging Megaman either.

I'm hesitant to put Missingno into the near-elite category, because who knows how strong it'll be next year?

The current near-elite list would have to consist of Squall, Vincent, Auron, Tifa and Missingno. (I suppose, I guess a strength drop is speculation right now). If Sonic is still the weakest of the Noble Nine, I don't think this performance from Kirby grants him the right to make the list. I'm not sure who else would be worth including beyond those really.

Yeah, I'd wait to see what Missingno does next year before we include it in that list, unless we want to include L-Block.

To me, near-elite means greater than 30% on Link (may have to be revised if Link has taken a drop this year) and not a Noble Niner.

In my opinion, the near elites are (in no particular order):

Squall
Vincent
Auron
Tifa
Maybe Bowser, need to see what he does tomorrow

Near elites being those who would have a realistic shot at beating a Noble Niner, by that definition. If you want to expand it, you could include Ganon, Zelda, Sora, Ryu, Dante, Luigi, and Yoshi, for starters.

Since it's a list that can change, I don't see a problem with putting Missingno. there now. Even if it won't be a near-elite in the future, it certainly is one now (or at least was a few days ago). L-Block and WCC are no longer near-elites so they shouldn't be on the list.

Really, that other list of characters are what I would just call upper midcarders. There's no chance I would take any of them to beat the Big Four or Joke Strength (the umbrella term is better I think). We don't need any near elites listed by those four FF characters and Missingno.

What does this have to do with anything? I think any joke object would have done the same. L-Block dominated polls that weren't head to head, and now it's clearly weak. There's no evidence to suggest Missingno. won't fall off just like WCC did.

I don't think it will collapse as badly as L-Block and WCC. I'm not sure it will stay in the near-elite range, though.

Bowser has to be included. You come within 1200 votes of a Noble Niner in a 24-hour 1v1 match, it takes a lot for you to be dropped below the "near-elite" status. On the same note, Bowser essentially did in that poll what Missingno. did here--solidly win a 12-hour block. Snake's lead peaked at a bit over 2100 just before the 12-hour mark of that poll, and then Bowser tore it apart, getting the lead to around 750 and eventually losing by 1196--in essence, taking the second half of the poll by 913 votes, far better than the 527 that Missingno. beat Crono by. Also, Bowser is among the elite few who have yet to lose to a non-Niner in a 1v1 setting. I believe the only four names on that list with any clout are Vincent, Tifa, Zelda, and Bowser. (Fox is also on that list, but that's more a quirk of bracket placement than anything else--he's been in three 1v1-format contests and has never made it past the second round without running into the NN.)

Yep, my bad, I was just trying to show how times changed.

Haha, Ulti calling a topic instead of just taking it!

Really, what if after the contest ends we just take a vote on the next five major contenders outside of the Noble Nine? Let the most-picked five (or more as long as we don't let every Tom, Dick, and Harry in) be in that group. Besides that, having a next-in-line category allows the likes of Crono/Sonic/Mega Man to definitively stay in the Noble Nine instead of arguing whether or not they would be better grouped with the near-elites at this point -- that way the Noble Nine isn't officially trying to say those guys are inherently still stronger than the next-in-line, it's just that the other guys aren't in this exclusive little club.

HaRRicH | Posted 3/13/2010 12:14:16 PM | message detail
And yeah, Missingno will still be strong next year. It performed historically on Noble Niners in two of its first three matches one-on-one, plus it still beat Yoshi with little/no rallying, and it gave the biggest beating in the vote-in polls despite two other Pokemon and Toad (MMX had a higher percentage, but Missingno beat The Boss worse than MMX beat HK-47 -- their respective second-place opponents in the vote-ins). It shouldn't really do what it did to Crono or Sephiroth again, but it'll probably be at Yoshi's strength or a little below next year with a decent chance of going clutch close matches, and that's still plenty respectable.

In Vincent's case, I'll take 38% on Sephiroth over 45% on Sonic any day of the week, and any SFF is just gravy. Squall, Auron, and Tifa didn't really get the chance to prove themselves this year, I agree, but Kirby's never proven he was on that level except for 2008, which was pretty clearly a fluke at this point.

What's the focus on Lightning in FF13 anyway - is she clearly the star of the show, like a Cloud or Squall, or is it more ensemble cast like FF12, or in between?

Oh, Lightning is definitely the star of the show. She will definitely be the strongest character from that game by far. I'd imagine the FFXIII cast will be like the FFVIII cast: One really strong character and a bunch of pretty weak ones.

Tifa can still prove herself against Sephiroth, and Squall of course still has a very outside chance against Snake. Even if he doesn't best Snake, getting close to Snake when Snake isn't Solid **** would look great on him. Snake is currently, at the very least, 5th in the hierarchy of the Noble Nine. Auron will be able to prove himself indirectly with Squall, so yeah... remains to be seen still.

Closer to in between, with a slight lean toward being the clear star of the show. You spend various chunks of the game without her, but the story puts her squarely in the role of the main character. She should be easily the most popular character in the game with Sazh coming in a ways behind her, but still ahead of everyone else.

Yeah, except for when it's the last post and you hit end page. And he wasn't asking for the "Focus" in terms of what that means in the context of the game. He wants to know how much the game focuses on Lightning.

I'm just curious as to what people are basing Sonic being the weakest of the N9 on?

Also, Sonic is disappointing me a bit, but maybe I underestimated Kirby too. It's hard to say -- but Canada is disappointing me a lot in keeping Kirby afloat. Take out Canada and Sonic would be maybe at 56%? I dunno how many votes Canada accounts for though.

Also what has Snake done to prove that he is at the very least the 5th strongest of the N9? At this point, as much as I dislike Mega Man, he has shown to be stronger than Snake in the very least, as has Sonic. Crono is hard to get a read on (lol joke characters) and 57% on Ganondorf/ 55% on Kirby definitely >>>>> 55% on Pikachu.

I think its pretty obvious he's not THE weakest now... I'd give that to Crono. Sonic has proven himself this contest, easily beating the two characters we thought may take him out, while Crono loses first round.

Remove Canada and Sonic likely breaks 56%. Can't really blame them, this was the place where the SNES thrashed the Genesis and the Nintendo 64 defeated (or was close to) the Playstation.

Also you can blame it on the sprite, but to even look decent that sprite would have to account for a ridiculous amount of percentage -- and it was at night. Snake has looked horrible. I mean, taking 2007 Pikachu (inflated stats from 4 ways lol) and 2006 Sonic...Sonic would be projected to 68% on Pikachu. So you would have to assume a 13% swing from boosting and picture deficit just to make Snake this year = 2006 Sonic.

Come on, Snake supporters, give it up. He had a good couple years because of 4 ways and Brawl/MGS4 hype...but he's done.
