It's the difference between a day and a night match, and the difference between Crono or Yoshi and Sephiroth. Look at Missingno's vote-in trends that were posted. He goes from 18.5% in the first hour to 15.5% at noon (x-stats wise, that's a 58-42 difference). You've got to assume Sephiroth can gain like 4% during the Power Hour, and on top of that Sephiroth would gain a lot on the 11 characters forming Missingno's competition in the vote-in even after 1 AM.

Alternately, you could just look at Cloud/Falcon. Cloud gained 11% against Falcon from the freeze to the end. Sephiroth can do the same to Missingno here.

And the fact of the matter is, if Missingno doesn't get a big early surge like L-Block got in his 2007 run, he's not going to beat Sephiroth. Bandwagons are not distributed evenly through the day- they impact the beginning of the match much much more.

I'm just saying that it's ridiculous to believe that Sephiroth is going to win should Missingno lead by the end of the hour. His supporters would not let it down. Also you're crazy if you think Sephiroth can match Cloud's swing in a rally match.

MissingNo isn't going to win no matter what percentage it has at the freeze. It could have 100% at the freeze and Sephiroth will still win.

A bandwagon match, much more than a rally match. You'd expect the swing to easily exceed Cloud's if anything.

If Missingno really turns on the rallying, he could win with only 55% at the end of the hour. 53% would be pretty much zero chance.

And the end of the hour is probably a much better marker than the freeze because the freeze is just too volatile. I think OOT actually went up on FFVII the second update last year, IIRC.

In that case, as a Missingno supporter, I want him to have at least 56% at 1 AM. 58% would be nice, and make him the favorite in my eyes.

But if it acts like a joke enough to beat Sephiroth, it's going to get bandwagoned. Cube went from beating Tidus to beating Megaman with Zero in the poll and a ton of rallying- hardly a big jump, and it still won the early vote easily anyway.

Let's rank the most entertaining contest entities!

1. Crono- I know I'm biased, but this is quite legitimate. What character has produced as much excitement over the years as Crono? A miracle run in 2002 that ended in his first duel with Mario, the most infamous match of all time the next year with Mario, and plenty of fun or misery in 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009. 2004 and 2005 were not quite so epic, but even then Crono produced a lot of excitement!

2. Mario- The Dark Lord of the Sith.....er......Master of Close Matches. Cloud and Crono in 2002, Crono in 2003, Zelda 1 in 2009, Mario has made a career out of winning clutch matches. Of course, Mario also has another existence, as a mid-Noble Niner and regular contest figure, a position that makes him quite important and interesting by itself.

3. Starcraft- It was close between SC and Frog, but I went with SC because while it only had 1 worthwhile year, it gave us the greatest run in contest history, a run that has never been matched for excitement since. Frog is good and has given us excitement through many years, but Starcraft operated on a grander scale in its 1 great year and gave us some of the greatest matches in contest history.

4. Frog- The modern day master of close matches. It would be interesting to see Frog and Mario fight it out for the title of best clutch character, though it could never happen due to Mario being way stronger. I think Mario probably wins the clutch battle too- the plumber's got it down to a subtle art where he lifts a finger, gets a +40 update, and wins. Frog's comebacks seem to require a lot more effort on his part.

I'll end my list at 4 for now, because no one really stands out as number 5.

I still think Kirby has a scarily realistic shot. I very much doubt Pika going all crazy last night was exclusively the result of the pic. Pikachu was ****ing crushing the board vote; does anyone think those people would have voted any different in any scenario?

What we saw was essentially Pikachu roiding up despite looking disappointing in the prior round. Kirby already did it last year, and it's just been proven very possible in 1v1s. Puffball is still scaring the crap out of me.

I'm voting Missingno until Cloud. I may vote for Cloud there if he can show any signs that he can beat Link. Otherwise I'm voting Missingno until the final, at which time I'm switching to Link. Basically my goals are:

1. Make Crono look as good as possible.
2. Make Link or Cloud win the contest, with Cloud preferred to Link.

Red Sox, I think this may be the first time since 2007 where Crono/Vincent trends may be reliable, and even relevant (not counting Crono/Vincent 2008). This is like your dream come true.
(Though you've barely been using Crono/Vincent at all this contest, I'm actually curious why.)

Auron's no dud, we knew going into this that Squall and Auron both have been consistently strong. Auron's won some debated matches before -- he killed Tails in his debut and beat Sonic in 2008. He did lose to Ganon in 2005, but that was post-VC Ganon so that's not the same Ganon this contest...lost to Ryu in 2007, but that was with Cloud in the poll...and then there's this match, which, again, was a collision of power-houses anyway. I think that covers any matches of his that had much serious debate.

Okay, beating Sonic is not impressive. Banjo could beat Sonic.

Auron is a lot like Dante. He can put up good numbers against people on a lower level than him but when push comes to stove in a debatable match, he stil can't pull through. I'm looking at this match and his match against Ganondorf. Though I suppose he was the slight underdog in both of those matches. I want to see Auron vs Ganondorf again so Auron can mop the floor with that horrible character

Crono/Vincent trends was probably my way of coping with the pain from that match. Except I don't think constantly reminding yourself of something painful is the best way to cope with it, but it seems to be my first response (this explains why I am a Red Sox fan too).

How come Auron never gets to face fodder? He's always facing mid-carders upper-carders in Round 1. In 2003 he had Tails. In 2004 he had Scorpion then Ness. In 2005 he had Big Boss. In 2006 he had Alucard and then Sub-Zero. In 2007 and 2008 he didn't get any complete fodder-packs (Like Ganon/Dante/Magus did). This year was actually the worst. He had to fight Aeris and then Zero. He's a tough contest warrior, that's for sure.

ToadYoshi | Posted 3/11/2010 4:06:17 PM | message detail
Squall and Auron have a legitimate argument to be the eleventh and twelfth strongest characters in the field respectively. 48% on Squall does not make you a choker. Happening to get paired with characters that are slightly stronger does not in any way influence the inherent strength of characters. (Note: this absolves Dante, Kefka, and Donkey Kong from blame as well).

If we're using the same definitions of 'clutch' and 'choke' (the ability to to better than expected/inability to preform to expectations in close matches) in theory, the only truly 'clutch' and 'choke' characters would be those who inspire rallies and 'rallies' against for or against them during close matches. This would make Frog and Starcraft probably the top two clutch performers, with Mario, Phoenix Wright, and other board favorites close behind them. Choke character would be those who would inspire additional anti-votes in close matches, such as Master Chief and, iroically enough, Sephiroth. I don't doubt this is partially the reason Snake had a great final update against Sephiroth in the 2k5 Battle Royale.

Pokémon is kind of a wild card, I don't know whether it would be clutch or choke (actually it would definitely inspire both rallied votes and anti-votes, the question would be which there are more of). Of course, jokes are always very clutch in this way, meaning that for tonight's match Missingno will have the advantage if it is close; then again, most of us already knew that. The question is if Missingno can even keep it close, which will be difficult during the dead hours.
