Oh man, I just remembered that Squall has a picture disadvantage.

I suppose that has to do with characters like Cloud and Squall not being known to their fans as sprites first?

And once again, we really need to have the #1 seeds get day matches next contest.
Nah, today was classic board early overreaction. Snake wins this easily in the day too. He may end up well above 55% if he keeps this up. Pika's doing well in America though, so maybe the morning vote brings him back down a little. Still, I think 55% is a minimum here, which means he still easily wins the day. Besides, MM/Mario will be so much more awesome for being at night.
LeonhartFour | Posted 3/10/2010 10:53:39 PM | message detail
I don't think the pic is that much of a difference maker. I don't see it disproportionately favoring Auron.

Two 12-hour normal polls wouldn't be that weird. Plus it'd shake things up a bit. Imagine Samus/Cloud or Snake/Pikachu in the day! As is, all #1 seeds are stuck at night, which is when the weaker ones excluding Sora do best!

If we want real upsets, #1 seeds getting day matches is the way to go.

It's not a horrible disadvantage or anything, but I can see it swaying the result in a match where both characters are already close and when most voters probably like both guys.

I think Auron is the favorite all of a sudden.

No, no, the later generations were better because they actually had a story. Of course, the originals were fun because they were so buggy. So I guess...

DPP >= RB (Y?) > RSE > GSC > FRLG

...Actually, you almost have to separate Platinum from Diamond and Pearl. Yeah, I think this looks better:

Pt > RB > RSE => DP > GSC > FRLG

From what I hear, though, HGSS should rank ahead of GSC, and possibly ahead of RSE/DP.

54.41% hour for Snake there, and he should start doing even better now. I think 56% is still potentially within reach, at least at some point in the match, even if he doesn't finish with it.

Yeah, that was a compliment. I get the impression you're one of the most respected and liked guys in the stats topic, probably right after Red Sox.
New idea bound to cause much arguing and mayhem: Rank the stats topic guys as you think the board feels about them!

Fact or Fiction: Auron/Squall finally ends up deposing Frog/Liquid as the closest wire-to-wire match of all time.

If it's close after the first three hours -- and there's no reason why it shouldn't be -- it's got a real shot at it. It's an SFF-match in a format with diluted trends, and it's not like they have greatly varying trends anyway. If only it was a weekend-match, too, but even then some places are on spring break this week...!

Eh...actually, now that I'm thinking about it, GSC was, like, one of the better ones to begin with. And I'm probably ranking RB too high because Missingno. mania is sweeping the board. Okay, let's try this again:

Pt > RSE > GSC > DP > RBY

There, that looks pretty good. And no, I don't understand where all the hatred for Generation III is coming from; Generation III kicked ass. The berries that you could plant yourself? A Generation III innovation. Abilities? Also a Generation III innovation. Contests? Generation III, and also, they were actually good, unlike that crap in Generation IV where there are no more combos and the first two segments are this random dress-up **** and this random dancing ****. Villains? Team Magma and Team Aqua were a lot better than Team Rocket ever was, and Team Galactic didn't come to the head of the list until Platinum, when we all realized just what a madman Cyrus really was. Starters? Fairly awesome. Generation I's will always be the best, but Generation III's are probably the second-best trio--although Torterra and Empoleon are both awesome, I give the fourth generation points off for Infernape, dorkier-looking intermediate forms than usual, and the fact that the anime is pushing Piplup as the new Pikachu. Reasons to keep coming back? Uh, Mirage Island, anyone? For that gamer that just has to do everything that can possibly be done, finding Mirage Island is the ultimate test of endurance--and frustration. Sure, Generation III took away the night/day feature, which was really sucky, but overall, it was one of the better entries, in my opinion.

Pretty much everything is on the line for me in the next match, and I've been anticipating it ever since I saw it on the bracket. If Auron wins, I can potentially win a prize (provided the 'Zard and Seph pull through in their matches...though I may still be able to win one with Bowser).

Nothing like going all-in on one of your favorite characters.

GO AURON!

Ranking the regs was not at all meant to be taken seriously. I just meant that it would be 1000 times worse than earlier tonight if people tried. I mentioned Red Sox and Leon, and I don't wanna say anything else so no one gets left out or insulted.
Wow. Now if people rank the regulars I'll be blamed for destroying board 8. Oops.

Actually relating to the contest, Snake looks well on his way to getting a 55% hour and that should go up as we get through the night. Also his NA %age is rising decently quickly. I think 56% is doable?
So what do we think this is non-sprite? Even if we assume this made a 4% difference, then 40% on Snake is approaching a near elite. He's right around Bowser level and only a few point off Squall. Do we think the pic makes more of a difference than that?

Solid, as always, is suffering from Solid **** and it doesn't help that his sprite keeps aging worse than the year before. We've also seen Pikachu kick ass with sprites before (though 2008 shouldn't count, really -- only one of his five pics was a sprite). Combine the two, and holy moly.

Even still, Pikachu's doing better on post-SSBB/MGS4 Solid **** in a night-match than Yoshi did on a pre-SSBB/MGS2 Solid **** in a full match, and Yoshi's sprite is pretty universally known and liked...and is doing so with nearly 4% to spare. Pikachu's looking good.

Didn't Snake have a different sprite in that Yoshi match - one that was even worse? Also, how did Snake NOT underperform with that abomination he got against Zelda in 2005??

And Snake may have underperformed against Zelda, but at least he still looked like a human being somewhat.

Tiger Woods might top the list though.

In 06, they did do a good job of putting a recognizable background picture behind the characters in the sprite round. Snake's was especially smaller, so it showed a lot of the background picture. Although, this one might be showing a lot too.

This isn't really all that awful for Snake. He should finish around 55-56%, so if you allow 2-3% for the sprite he'd have put in a reasonable performance.

Pikachu vs. Ryu, who's your pick?

Yeah, Sephiroth/Missingno does indeed look kinda scary now. Missingno being Joke/Pokemon should absolutely dominate Sephiroth with the board vote and beside that, it is much easier to rally against a hated FF7 character.

Super Pokemon/Joke craze, people craving for huge upset, FF7 anti-votes and the fact that Sephiroth looks kinda of awful with that pic are all indications to look out for. If Sephiroth does fall, i think Snake(my favorite VG character of all time) would succumb to Missingno too.

Joke characters have strength the first time they are in the contest.Missingno first match beat a NN,then beat Yoshi worst that it beat Crono so it is legit I think. The only drawback is that it fights Sephiroth an a night match while night is strong for FF 7 and weak for Pokemon. But if Pika can keep Snake under 55% then...

Well, i support the idea that Jokes are only strong in their first contest appearance. Missingno looked mighty impressive in all of its rounds so far compared to fallen joke characters like L-block/WCC, btw Missingno isn't just getting joke votes, it is getting the crazy Pokemon / anti-FF7 votes too.

Great performance by the rat today. Too bad this is not a day match. I agree with the sentiment that next contest, 1 seeds should get day matches. If only to see how that shifts the trends.

Not too optimistic about Missingno's chances against Sephiroth. Pika fell pretty good during the night, which also happens to be Sephiroth's best time. The fact that Missingno had day matches and went even with Crono and Yoshi does not draw much confidence in a night match against a stronger character whose best time is the dead hours. The glitch needs a bandwagon, but if there is any character to bandwagon against, Sephy would be the one.

Even though I voted against him the previous two rounds, I will be supporting Missingno from here on out. I hope that the first match I vote for Missingno is not the one he loses in.
