Well, he's clearly been the strongest RE rep since 2005. If he only drew strength from RE2, he'd have probably never made a contest and would be weaker than Claire if he had.

About FFVII trends: Before 2008, you'd have been hard pressed to find any characters that did better against them in the second half of the match than the first. Cloud, Sephiroth, and Vincent always ended at their highest percentages of the day. But in 2008, we started seeing first half = second half for FFVII, and in 2009 we actually did see the game lose about 1% with the ASV, showing a 2% decline from the first to second half. So I guess the point is that if you trust the Games Contest, then comparing to old FFVII trends no longer works.

The biggest shift between the morning and ASV that I can think of is Magus/Sandbag. Sandbag only won 1 hour in the morning, and with less than 51% I think, and then he put up ~59% over the ASV.

FF7 doesn't benefit from Kingdom Hearts like Cloud and Sephiroth, so I don't think you can compare the game's trends to the characters perfectly.

Seriously, we ALWAYS seem to get topics that are just "WHY IS MASTER CHIEF LOSING HE WOULD JUST SHOOT SUB-ZERO." Also, if you visit the game's board on a day of a character's match, you get stuff like "WHY IS SHEPARD LOSING PIKACHU ISN'T AS STRONG AS A REAPER" and crap like that.

Random facts: if we rank characters in each half division from 1-8 based on their X-stats on the winner of the division, the lowest ranked such character to win a match was Laharl. He's 7th and Neku's 8th (of course) in the Heart top half. This is unlikely to change with the remaining four divisions.

The highest ranked character to not win a match is Rikku, ranked 2nd in the Chaos bottom half. Crono could conceivably join her if Missingno. beats Sephiroth by an appreciable margin.

The only half division where nobody got screwed (ie, 2nd place is 2nd strongest, 3rd and 4th both won a match) is the Hyrule upper half, and there's a very good chance that Gear upper half will end up this way too.

Ryu is doing good work with the night vote, but these votals are very weak. Both Leon and Ryu may be strong, but they have relatively similar appeal and neither have much to do with Nintendo or Square. Guess that hurts.

Capcom definitely is, yeah. Mega Man, Ryu, Dante, Leon, MMX, Zero, Jill, Amaterasu, and Chris are all pretty good; Akuma, Ken, Wesker, and Phoenix Wright just add the total! They've probably got the third most characters in this thing, too.

Yeah, people will never stop overblowing Big Boss's pic. It might make some difference, but there's no day and night situation. He'll never revert back to, say, what he got on Auron even with a melty pic. He's far too known nowadays for that.

I'd agree with this. Especially when Big Boss keeps getting new games and Leon seems to get all his strength from the awesomeness that was RE4(which, various ports or not, is still a game that came out in 2005).

Analysis

While normally this match would be an easy win for Snake this being the sprite round adds a little spice to the match. Solid Snake won’t lose, but his Solid **** picture is legendary while the last time Pikachu got a sprite was during the fiasco against Dante and Leon. If this was a normal match I would expect Pikachu to perform slightly better than what Fox was able to accomplish last round, but all that is left to do is see how much the picture affects the results.

I never understood the people who used Pikachu’s previous match as a way to show that he is weaker this contest. Sure Shepard performed better than expected, but anyone who thinks that Shepard is anywhere near his previous self is kidding themselves. Mass Effect 2’s advertising campaign was huge, almost similar to Halo 3. If the release of Halo 3 boosted Master Chief from a mid-card to getting 47% against Solid Snake then it is quite possible that Mass Effect 2 could boost Shepard from high fodder to a mid-card.

I can see why some people play down Pikachu though. Pikachu hasn’t had a fair match in which he’s proven that he is a near-elite. Personally I think Pikachu is a step lower than the other Nintendo near-elites, but with the success of Pokemon so far this contest it is possible that the rat has boosted, especially with a hyped Pokemon game coming out in less than a week.

The last time we’ve seen Solid **** Yoshi was able to break 42% in 2006 and Kratos reached 39% in 2007, but that was with L-Block. Since then Solid Snake has likely boosted in terms of strength, but how much of it will be retained with a sprite picture? Solid Snake is likely to break 60%, but it is possible for Pikachu to over perform with the way Pokemon has been looking this contest.

Charizard just got 61% against L in the sprite round too, which if you remember, projected him to 55%+ on Auron and Squall based on HK-47.

There's more recent and viable evidence that suggests Fox > Pika. In 2007, a Pikachu that may have been momentum-fueled managed 43.3% on Luigi in a 4way match. One year later, Fox managed 45% on Yoshi. Not a huge difference, but Fox's performance is still better. Of course, there's also the fact that Fox performed a metric assload better on Captain Falcon than Pikachu did, and yes, there's a limit to how much even CAPTAIN FALCON can increase in one year.

I dunno about Fox/Pikachu. I think I'd go with Pikachu because he looks stronger indirectly and rSFF is a once in a few years kind of thing. A doubling is hard to argue with though.
