Well looking at it this way Yoshi beat Dante, who beat Hayabusa with 65%, and Yoshi roughly = Luigi. Sonic beat Luigi 60 - 40. Therefore Sonic would beat Hayabusa with 75%?

I mean honestly there's not much that can be gleaned from this match. Hayabusa has always been weak in the face of strong characters, and calling this a stellar performance by MM is blind favoritism -- especially when you guys immediately downplayed Sonic's win over Ganondorf. It's crazy how much fanboyism/hate there is in this topic.

I mean, I admit to being a Sonic fanboy -- but this performance in no way is more impressive than what Sonic put up on Ganondorf.

Sonic and MM have had huge potential to increase in power. One reason is they were both pretty absent in the 32/64bit era overall. Introducing them in a positive manner to people who never played their games will obviously be able to boost them nicely.

1) I mostly agree, except I don't think downloadable titles at this time are the way to tap that potential. Both downloadable-GotY winners have failed hard in the overall-GotY polls, Mega Man showed no increase between 2007 and 2008 with MM9, and Tim was a download-only character when he first debuted...and I believe he was dead last in 2008's x-stats. Those were four-ways, but I don't have much faith in one-on-one matches making downloadable titles more of a factor at this time.

2) Samus didn't have much exposure in that era either, but it'll be hard to get her to increase in strength again. Heck, it took awhile before Metroid Prime did anything for her.


I've never really understood the BUT IT'S FREAKING MARIO thing. [...] It almost happened with X, Mega Man > X, and it's a night match. X was leading for most of the first 12 hours.

It's already been covered, but Zelda/Mudkip were in that poll, not to mention that Mario was still able to fend MMX off in polls that featured Luigi and Link. Throw in this good ole'-fashioned poll...

...and it's hard to imagine Mega Man has what it takes to overcome.


I'll be rooting for an upset with all my heart, but we saw what Mario did to his relative platforming equal in Samus when we didn't think SFF would play a part in it. Mega Man's not Nintendo, but he's close to it and it's hard to find an advantage he actually has on Mario outside of this contest's numbers...which are still sketchy to try applying well.

Still, go Mega Man. Here's to hoping it's at least close.

The picture definitely matters, but Megaman > Mario was viable with MM below 65% based on past performances.

Hayabusa folding to all strong competition is a violation of linearity which is a very rare thing in these contests. It's not impossible but unlikely without further evidence for it, while there's ample evidence that he underperforms against Snake regardless of the picture, probably because of character appeal SFF.

Kirby has very little chance of beating Sonic.

Mega Man is strong, but he's not that strong. His performance over Zack and Cid was not more impressive than Mario's performance over Big Boss.

Curt, one problem is we have no concrete evidence that sonic is back to 2k6 yet. Which is what you're using. I have no doubt Sonic will surpass that next year with StH4, but we need to see his performance vs kirby still. Bacondorf/night match is one reason that the match has still left people skeptical of Sonic. Woot if he is at 2k6 level or above.

I'd have taken Zack before the contest. But yeah, it's probably pretty close, and Mario/Megaman will probably be pretty close too barring any SFF out of left field. Think I'd pick 51-49 Mario as a percentage right now.......well that's what actually very close to what I picked last night before seeing Mario fail to stomp Ike with SFF and Megaman pull this incredible performance. So this Megaman > Mario talk is not an overreaction based on a new match, at least from me!
