I made that Sephiroth picture in 2008 before the sprite round was canceled and submitted it well before Crono lost this year. I honestly didn't give MissingNo a chance at making it this far at the time. Not sure if it's ideal, but definitely not sabotage (it's my second Zolom cameo pic!)

It's hard to realistically and intentionally sabotage a character. SB -- while not always picking the best pictures available -- doesn't often pick the worst of pictures either. We've only seen a few pictures ever really matter anyway. If people are getting Solid **** in non-sprite rounds or Werehog into pics, that'll be sabotage. Otherwise...eh, bad pics get through sometimes and sprite-rounds have traditionally been pretty bad for them.

I'm satisfied with the Ganondorf picture. Going by Luigi, Zelda 1 Ganon is worth 46.46% on normal Ganondorf. I think LttP Ganon is a pretty sizeable step up from Zelda 1 Ganon - if LttP isn't the surefire third strongest game on the site like we thought it might be it's at least in the discussion. And LttP is certainly the most popular game released before 1996.

So Ganondorf's not going to be at full strength, but I think he's got enough leeway that the match doesn't switch unless it's pretty close - like, 52% Sonic or so.

I honestly think Sonic could shoot for 60%, but I'm trying not to voice that opinion too seriously because of the implications that sprite round pics always carry for my #1 character in these contests. Pika is one of those characters that does not seem to want to go quietly into that good night, either.

Sonic gave Luigi one hell of a sprite round flogging years ago. Luigi might not be quite as strong as Ganon, but his sprite looks better. Granted, this ain't 2006 Sonic, but I wouldn't be surprised if won this with extreme ease and made the Ganon backers look kind of silly.

That would look horrible for Kirby's chances against Sonic, what with the day match advantage and all. Of course, it's not like Kirby looked incredible before beating Sonic last year, either. He just sorta did it. That's what scares me most about Kirby; there is already precedent for him looking merely alright during the early stages of a contest and then beating Sonic outta ****ing nowhere. There is PRECEDENT, man.

Ganon should by all means break 45%. I feel pretty good about Sonic at this point, but Ganon will make him sweat unless he's dropped bad or Sonic's a beast.

Sonic very nearly lost to Squall with Sora in the sprite round. I don't think it's any sort of boost to him.

I just really don't have any respect for Sonic. 60% on Magus/Sandbag, 47% on Auron, 36% on Sephiroth in 2008 (to say nothing of Kirby). 55% on Sub-Zero, 51% on Squall, 43% on Snake in 2007. 64% on Lightning this year. There's just not much to be proud of.

I don't feel particularly good about Ganondorf but if there's anyone who can lose this match it's Sonic.

I don't think beating a member of Noble Nine who is from a rather niche game had anything to do with Missingno not getting a bandwagon. In the past, I do not know of any cases of a character getting a bandwagon as early as round 2. Bandwagons generally occur later in the contest. It's harder to get a bandwagon early in the contest than it is later on.

Going back to the 2007 L-Block run, L-Block did not really start to show signs of bandwagoning until round 4 of the contest and the bandwagon really took off in round 5.

Kirby showed signs of bandwagoning in round 4 last year and Snake showed signs of bandwagoning in round 5. Kirby got a full bandwagon in round 5, while Snake got it in the final.

And for the Starcraft run, wasn't Starcraft's round 3 match with Wind Waker the first time it started getting bandwagoned?

I don't think Starcraft ever had a visible bandwagon. It was strong at the start of all of it's matches, since it was a 3am start time back then. Nothing at all like the L-Block/Kirby/Snake bandwagons where the early voters caused them to drop the whole match.

Analysis

Before Missingno this match was considered to be the biggest threat to the Noble Nine’s winning streak. The Noble Nine may be broken, but the upset is still here and along with Sora Sonic is one of the most likely 1 seeds to lose before the quarterfinals. The Sonic Team may have had a rough start to the beginning of the contest, but a lot of things have shifted towards Sonic`s favour.

The beginning of the first round was a terrible start to the crew, Shadow lost to Amaterasu, Sonic let a character whose game wasn`t out in North America look decent and Knuckles almost lost to Cecil. The first week of the contest almost made Sonic`s chances against future opponents almost non-existent. However things began to turn around for the Hedgehog, Tails` performance on Kratos and his performance on Charizard was decent, Amaterasu put a great effort on Luigi and Old Final Fantasy seems to be stronger in this contest. The board predicted that Sonic and crew would rebound in the change of formats and maybe they have.

A large debate of the reason why Ganondorf would lose is because of his picture in the sprite round and as different as it is I think people are overrating the effect of that picture. First while pictures may have a large effect as seen with Solid Snake those are examples of anomalies, not the trend. The last time we had sprite Ganondorf Luigi went from a 48% loss to a 51% win, not much of a change, but big enough if you feel that this match will be close.

If Sonic does win by a small amount I would likely blame that on the fact that this is a night match than the picture. With Asia’s hatred for Zelda and Europe’s, mostly United Kingdom’s love for Sonic I see Sonic performing well at night and during the morning which is Europe’s ASV. I feel that Sonic won’t be in danger of losing, but at the same time Ganondorf will keep the match close.
