~*Say What? Some Common Stat Topic Lingo Defined*~

SFF (Same Fanbase Factor) - Same Fanbase Factor is the theory that, if two contestants share a common fanbase, the weaker of the two options will underperform in a direct matchup. For instance, Link was expected to defeat Ganon with 65% of the vote in 2004, based on their 2003 values. Instead, Link collected near 88% of the vote, because the Zelda fanbase so clearly sided with him. However, take some SFF labels with a grain of salt, as many people will slap it onto any match that doesn't make total sense. This has caused a few SFF jokes, with LordOfDabu's "Some Frivolous Factor" being the funniest of them.

X-Stats - Short form of Extrapolated Statistics, aka the mathematical "strength" of a contestant that can be determined based on their performance in any given matchup. See above for a detailed explanation of the x-stat process.

Noble Nine - Link, Cloud, Sephiroth, Mario, Crono, Solid Snake, Sonic, Samus and Mega Man.

Near-Elite - The Squall, Auron, Tifa, Vincent, Zelda, Kirby, Missingno etc group that has come at, near or even ahead of Noble Nine characters in the past.

The Fodder Line - A final X-Stat value of 15% or below.

Well in this case, the quotes get spammed because the game is *really* good. If you have a PC, 360 or PS3, I highly recommend it. The Orange Box is dirt cheap these days, and Portal really is as groundbreaking as everyone says it is. Plus it's like 2 hours long, so it's not home huge investment to make.

Also that has to be the most common 500th post in stat topic history. TRE, go calculate this.

I wonder when we'll see a gigantic Character Battle blowout again. My dream blowout match was always Tanner vs. Batman, but even if that happens, these voters will probably push Tanner to over 10% at least.

I own Portal because my younger brother wanted it. However, thanks to Steam I cannot install it on my computer, and I have not bothered since. Damn Steam.

I'm sure Ulti knows about Portal being called the 4th best game of the decade on Destructoid's list (since I've hammered it into all of you).

Lol I just looked on Wikipedia and apparently New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Bayonetta, Monster Hunter Tri, and Dragon Quest IX got perfect scores from Famitsu. And yet Demon's Souls got 29/40.

Famitsu sucks. Oh wait, didn't these guys give Final Fantasy VII a 35/40 (found that out somewhere, can't do so anymore) and Soulcalibur a perfect score? Yeah...

Maybe Demon's Souls got so low score because of difficulty?Plus really low percentage for Tifa.I get most people after seeing Freeman on Gamespot though he would beat anyone.

To answer that question, I would like somebody to find out what Mr. Kennedy got (percentage-wise) on Vivi in '07.

I would certainly vote for Sackboy over either of the stupid Assassin's Creed characters though, if only because...SACKBOY IS A VERY UNIQUE CHARACTER.

Also just in case none of you knew, I saw a "best heroes" list a while ago (don't remember where I saw it), and said list ranked Gordon Freeman in the top 15, only being beaten by Mario, Link, and Master Chief among video game characters. I have to think that Freeman being an original design for a hero (just an ordinary scientist who gets into huge trouble and doesn't go insane in the process, also accidentally threatening mankind and then working his hardest to save it...actually wait, that's not too original a design, is it?) is why he is so critically acclaimed, and obviously that's not something that a GameFAQs person would care about. Next contest, we should set up Gordon Freeman vs. Magus/Frog, if only to humiliate the latter. Breaking 38% on a character who has been a prime candidate to break the Noble Nine (well, break it even more now) is no joke, even if it was under somewhat favorable conditions (and isn't Freeman a night character?).

In the end, Freeman's run this contest was very comparable to HL2 in the games contest: pull out a close match against a decent midcarder in round 1 and then get bullied around by high midcarders in round 2. Poor guy deserves better IMO, we should feed him to Tidus or Alucard next contest at worst.

Man, if Mario has the same horrible asia vote as Link, Mega Man will look MIGHTY impressive

Analysis

If jokes were as threatening as they were in four-ways I believe that this match may have had some hype, but after the cube’s performance last round any hype for this match died with it. Unless the people who supported Missingno decide to rally for WCC I think it is likely that Luigi has a great chance at getting a bigger win this round.

Even though Amaterasu performed better than expected I think that it is because of our underestimation of her than Luigi’s weakness. I have no reason to believe that Luigi is any weaker this year relative to previous years. The main question is how strong The Boss is. The last time we saw her she was roughly at around the fodder line, since then it seems that Metal Gear has gone up in strength though that may have been because of Metal Gear Solid 4 in which she was not in.

I don’t expect The Boss to have risen in strength, but it is possible, especially since we haven’t seen her in a fair contest yet. Either way Luigi should have no problem winning and may even push for 60% should The Boss not be as strong as I think she is.

There were 2 Leon/Vivi matches in 2007.

In the round 1 match, Leon got 56.52% on Vivi and then got 60.52% on him in round 2. The round 2 match had Tidus, which hurt Vivi with some LFF. Leon's round 1 performance on Vivi is more legit.

And if you wanted to know how I found that out, all I had to do was this:

40.13 / (40.13 + 30.87) = 0.565211268

When converted to a percentage, it ends up being 56.52% once the last 5 numbers are dropped from the above calculation. 40.13 was Leon's percentage while 30.87 was Vivi's percentage in their round 1 match.

Mario would win the Asia vote over Link. Mario characters are decent in Asia, Zelda does horrible here, and Metroid is bottom of the barrel bad. Samus would lose to Link in Asia.

So... what on EARTH happened in Link/MM 2004? I know Link is supposed to SFF MM, but it's hard to imagine he ends up getting doubled after seeing what X is pulling here.

This also brings up the curious interaction of Mega Man and Mario coming up... do we think the plumber can SFF the Blue Bomber like Link once did? I'm interested to see what the predicted percentages are for that match.

MM = X means a lot of silly things, like Red and Revolver Ocelot beating the stuffing out of Cid Highwind and Zack Fair and Price easily winning over Yuna. Mega Man has clearly shown himself on a higher level this contest.

Just like 4-ways: they just aren't very transitive.

The #1 match I want to see now that will not be in this contest is Gordon Freeman vs. Magus or Frog, just to humiliate the loser. Either GFNW is finally brought back from the dead, or CT embarasses itself even worse.

I'm serious guys, I think votals for the last three rounds will be a very low because less people will be playing video games because of March Madness. My only question is will that hurt any one character more than any other?
I feel like it will destroy anyone's (i.e. MissingNo.'s) chances at a successful rally.
