Sorry, but I have to respond to this.

Also, now that I think about it, Squall vs. Auron is just another wishfully close match. There's no chance that Auron has a shot in that match at all, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was 55 - 45 or more. Auron vs. Ganondorf would probably go in Ganondorf's favor.

Ganon only got 54% during his strongest year and before Auron got KH2. Ever since then, Auron's looked golden while Ganon's looked weaker and weaker. I'd definitely take Auron in a rematch.

57% on Aeris puts Auron right where Squall is, for the record.

Why is everyone acting like this is a bad result for Pikachu? Shepard tripled Ellis in his R1 match. Yeah, it's Ellis, but it's not like the L4D characters did terribly in the vote-ins and L4D2 is a recent popular game.

It'll be alright if Pikachu can push it back up to 62% or so, but most people didn't expect Shepard to break 40. Mass Effect was really weak in the games contest, and I think there's a limit as to how much a media hype blitz can do (unless you're Master Chief and have Microsoft spending the equivalent of a small country's GDP to get your name out there). I guess one can argue that ME2 and the media blitz have turned Shep into a very legit guy, and heck, arguing that makes Charizard look better as well (Kratos also has a hype job right now), but I'm not sure I buy it. I think Fox could have easily outdone this.

Also, like Leon said, the only guys who have actually looked good from Pikachu's section of the 2008 bracket are Falcon and Ryu. Falcon was behind major Nintendo SFF for two years, and Ryu's had his biggest year in over a decade. It's possible that entire section is overrated.

They *can* blame LFF. Sticking two L4D characters in the same poll is pretty much the worse case of LFF that I can think of - take one of them out and I wouldn't be surprised if the other received 90% of the votes.

ME2 was a much bigger release than ME1, though. ME2 is to Shepard what Uncharted 2 was for Drake, except Shepard was already much stronger than Drake. Most GameFAQs users didn't play or even know much about ME1, but ME2 has definitely raised awareness here and has made Shepard incredibly more well-known. Plus, even if 2008 is overrated, the other Pokemon have been looking great.

Pikachu isn't beating Snake, but he'll do a bit better than expected (due to the pic factor). Of course, then people will use that to call Snake weak because Pikachu's weak because Shepard's weak because Ellis is weak.

KP already said it, but Alucard looked great this year. Two high midcarder showings, one against Magus, one against Link. Plus I don't think L-Block looked bad this year or that we can really draw much from 60% on Isaac who was essentially an unknown. Pikachu's matches so far are also completely unconvincing as he's faced basically 2 unknowns. Ike looked bad, but not as bad as Ryu and Alucard have looked good for the reason that it's much easier to gauge Ryu and Alucard's opponents than Ike's. Arthas looked undisputably horrible.

Relative to the board it was, but I always thought Charizard was closer to Mewtwo than Pikachu.

Of course GoW3 hype could have boost Kratos a bit.

It's hard to tell since this is the first contest we've seen Pikachu one-on-one without being SFF'd since 2002 and Banjo's hardly a good gauge for strength (especially given his Nintendo-roots), but it's hard to argue ME2 didn't do wonders for Shepard. He got 35% on Magus/Sandbag in 2008, and now he's at 39.58% on Pikachu. Considering how well Pikachu did in 2007 and 2008 and the big numbers he put up last round though, I'm okay saying this is pretty much all ME2 helping Shepard. It doesn't hurt Pikachu's case that Charizard/Missingno's been impressive and Red/Mewtwo did well enough, too.
