I would also say that Sora definitely would hurt Squall more than Yoshi would hurt Fox. @.@

Samus is the strongest "Smash guy".

Hmm... I admittedly forgot about Samus, but I'm not sure Smash did as much for her as it did for Fox. Super Metroid was pretty damn popular back in the day, and Samus was one of Nintendo's "big three" even before 1999, IIRC. Everyone knew Samus was a big deal!

Which is kinda funny since in terms of Brawl itself he's actually the weakest "Smash guy!"

Ah, but Missingno doesn't gain his One Winged Angel form until he defeats Sephiroth! That form gives him sweeping power over most of the field, enabling him to make them fall down before him merely by hearing a rendition of One Winged Angel, or Sephiroth's Theme, or similar such music, but it also gives him a hard-to-find weakness to 2 contestants in this contest, who may or may not be able to exploit it.

Most of the others are also in more popular games, although I wouldn't be sure about Samus and Kirby.

Fox is probably the face of Smash. Or at least of SSBM, but he has strong presences in the other games too, and SSBM is the pinnacle of Smash, so yeah, Fox could be considered the face of Smash.

Whoops, there you go. Kirby is definitely more of the "Smash guy" than Fox, since Star Fox 64 would probably demolish any Kirby game. It's now between Kirby and Samus!

I think Kirby is more popular for his design, while Fox gets more from his role in SSB/M. I'm not sure if it's fair to distinguish those, as without an audience for his design from Smash, Kirby would probably be pretty weak, but yeah.

Definitely worth bringing back next year

I and a LOT of others had no clue who Samus was before Smash 64. Fox was coming right off Star Fox 64. It unquestionably helped Samus more than Fox.

The face of Smash is Mario. Other characters will benefit from it and all that, but Mario is as close to a main character as that series will have. Like Ryu with Street Fighter. He's not the fan favorite or anything, but he's the face of that series.

Quick, spot the game similar in name to "Super Smash Brothers". It's no accident.

IDK.. I wish logic was usable in these contests. Like Mario suddenly gains 500 votes out of nowhere and then stalls for the rest of the match. I wonder how that happened.

Yeah except Snake beating Sephiroth in 2006.

NOT ONLY did the tactical espionage loser have to rely on Cloud siphoning most of Seph's strength, but he needed a massive surge of cheating as well.

Mario, Kirby, and Fox are the best candidates for being the "face" of the SSB-series, depending on the angle you want to take. I think Mario's the face in general to ensure SSB-games sell, Kirby's the face of casual-play and fun (doesn't hurt HAL Laboratory makes the games, either), and Fox's the face of technical skill and tournament play. They're all from the original SSB, too, so it's hard to beat that. I do think Solid Snake could make an argument for being the face of SSBB though.

Also, people who didn't know Samus before SSB better not call themselves old-school gamers unless they took the Master System/Genesis-route. She had the original spoiler of video games in Metroid and SM was a classic with Nintendo-fans then (though I was on the Genesis at that point). Metroid not having N64-representation was a big controversy within the fanbase too, so she and her series were definitely well-liked and popular back then, even if most people wouldn't put them on the LoZ/SMB-tiers. The "Big Three," as far as I'm concerned, started in the NES-era...though I'm okay if you think it started in the SNES-days to really solidify it.
