Ok don't pretend to not know Gyarados. If any pokemon player saw it they would recognize it.

Everyone who played RBY went after the red Gyarados in the lake,

No shinies in RBY.

is actually popular in competitive pokemon (unlike Charizard) and has the same nostalgic value. While Charizard does have more airtime in the show and movies; I think Gyarados has a better design and name. So it would be a toss-up for me, but as a nostalgic pokemon player Gyarados > Charizard personally.

You're putting way too much faith in the very minor competitive scene of Pokemon. RBY and the anime is the biggest factor in determining how strong a Pokemon will be (that's why Pikachu and Charizard are the strongest, and the starters wouldn't be far behind). Gyarados has that badass dragon stigma and a couple of awesome scenes from the anime, but beyond that, he doesn't compete with those guys.

And who in the heck is Gyarados anyway?

As someone who only played RBY, I don't even remember which one that is.

You had to evolve Magikrap (Magikarp, whatever) to get him, which no one enjoys. Gyarados is cool and all, but Curt is slightly overrating the guy. He is right about competitive fights and him being viable enough, but that's a vast minority of people. It's like saying Meta Knight, Marth, Falco, et al *has* to be strong in polls because of being godly in Smash.

I still think Red > Cid by a decent margin.

If X is stronger than Mega Man, this might be true in two cases!

I think he means Red XIII, not PT Red!

Well yeah I remember that part, I was just thinking of how unappealing it would be to have like 10 pokemon in the contest period. On the note of bringing it up, I still think Red > Cid by a decent margin.

People usually just anti-vote the Pokemon until only one or two remain.

You're kidding yourself if you don't think that Gyarados' only competition in the Pokemon hierarchy would be Charizard. I'm 100% sure, and would literally be willing to bet my account on Gyarados doing better than every other pokemon minus maybe Charizard.

No shinies in RBY didn't stop there from being a red Gyarados. Maybe you need to play it again.

Yeah, Gyarados might work.

I fully support the idea of nominating Tyranitar, because GSC is the only generation that has yet to get a representative. RGBY has had, so far, Pikachu, Charizard, Mewtwo, and Missingno.--oh, right, and Nidoran (female) in 2006--and DPP has had Lucario and Bidoof, and RSE had Mudkip.

There's no red Gyarados in RBY, the Red Gyarados is in the lake of rage north of Cianwood and Cianwood in in Jotho. RBY takes place in kanto, the only way a Gyarados can be red in RBY is by playing red version.

That was GSC that had the Red Gyarados, not RBY. And plenty of people never used it because you had to have a Water Pokemon before that anyway.

In Generation II Pokémon games, a red Gyarados at the Lake of Rage is a main part of the plot. After its defeat or capture, a Red Scale is obtained, which can be given to Mr. Pokémon in exchange for an Exp. Share. The red Gyarados is the only Pokémon in the Generation II games that will be shiny without fail.

From wikipedia.

Red Gyarados is from Gen 2, not in RBY.

Also Gyarados has been involved in the main plot of the pokemon show many times, as well as being a part of Lance's team etc. etc.

Gyarados is definitely one of the strongest pokemon. As long as there isn't a gratuitous amount of pokemon in the contest when he gets in I would set him at Charizard level strength easily.

Curt, you're letting fanboyism get in your head again.

Gyarados was featured in a few episodes. He was never the star as much as Pikachu or any of Ash's Pokemon. For as badass as Gyarados is, Charizard was that much more badass, and had everything else in his favor (Star of the TV show, most chosen starter for the biggest Pokemon game, most sought after Pokemon card). Seriously, if Pikachu wasn't so "safe", Charizard would be plastered all over the place. Gyarados is not in his league.

I agree with this. We don't need that many Pokemon in these contests, since we've already seen that they all aren't strong (Nidoran, Lucario, Mudkip, Bidoof). Stick with the first gen starters (Squirtle would be strongest), and maybe Gyarados/Birds/Jigglypuff in later years.

Jigglypuff, too, since Missingno. SFF seems more likely at this point.

Ask them if they like Snorlax.

Tauros.

Nidoking.

Alakazam.

Just because a Pokemon is popular among the fanbase doesn't mean they'll have contest strength. They need relevance. Exposure beyond the games and a few appearances in the anime.

That doesn't mean much when it comes to these contests.

There's no doubt he'd be strong. But he's not on Charizard or Pikachu's level. Both of those guys (and Mewtwo I guess) are far away from the pack.
