Why would Ratchet boost this year and not every other year he's been in the contests? Do you think the site is suddenly shifting towards platformer characters? His new game is somehow much, much more popular than all of his other new games that came out in previous years? He's a 12 hour contest god or something?

That's your problem. Ratchet was bottom-feeder trash for years until this contest, and the PS3 resurgence paired with that amazing commercial clearly helped him a lot. Phoenix and Jecht are not at all weak.

Oh, and I'd like to point out that if you assume that Eddie Riggs = Raz (Eddie is probably a bit stronger, but whatever), then Ratchet is on Crash's level. The same Crash who just put up 39% on Ryu Hayabusa.

The main problem of western companies is that there are no large scale series, a company makes a game, maybe a sequel then moves on to another style of game.

You can probably make an argument for that. Series like Mario, Zelda, Final Fantasy, Sonic, Mega Man have been going on for decades now, and they make the top tier of the contest. The one exception to the rule being Chrono Trigger, and we see how well that's been going for Crono/Frog/Magus.

Meanwhile, most of the Western characters seem to fall into two groups:
1) They've only been in a couple of games/finite trilogy(Kratos, Shepard, Big Daddy, Ezio/Altair, Sackboy)

2) They're FPS/shooter characters :/ (Gordon, Master Choke, Marcus Fenix, Captain Price/Soap)

The big exception seem to be Sub-Zero(who's from the long-running Mortal Kombat series) and, to a lesser extent, Vault Boy(from the long-running Fallout series).

There's a huge difference. That match was probably an underperformance (Prince got like 37% against Kirby the year before), and using 2008 Prince is like...ZSS-level. Looks worse and the new game got mixed reviews and not as many people played it.
