It's basically the same reason why it took four contests for Vincent and Tifa to see these contests.

FFVII had a lot of competition and caps over the years, Sub-Zero had none of that.

No one expected Kerrigan to be as weak as she was, not after what Starcraft did.

But if they were in the first contest instead of Aerith, at least Vincent would've never missed another contest, and we have a Terrific Ten!

But Kerrigan > Sub-Zero is still the most puzzling NRT result of all time.

Not really Kerrigan was from Starcraft while Sub-Zero was from Mortal Kombat that may or may not be stronger than Scorpion.

Man, I never understood why anyone thought Sub-Zero wouldn't be stronger than Scorpion. That never made sense to me.

But then again, I actually like Mortal Kombat unlike most of the board, so I had an understanding of the HIERARCHY.

And as the NRT originator, I have full rights to determine what the most puzzling result of all time was!

61% for Sub-Zero.

Doesn't seem terribly shocking to me. The arguments SC fans were solid at the time. SC just had an incredible games contest, and Kerrigan is the most well-known, beloved character from that game. She had the loading screen and all that crap, and even if it was primarily a multiplayer game, it seemed foolish to assume most of the fanbase had not at at least played through the campaign mode once. She was an exciting wild card.

Sub-Zero, on the other hand, was probably seen as a Scorpion color swap with identical strength. I always figured Subz would be stronger than Scorpion, but there was nothing particularly exciting about him making the bracket.

Do you think Pokemon would have one three contests if the board didn't like the series?

I'm not sure if it was you, but weren't people saying the exact same thing about a certain fire-breather 24 hours ago? The ASV doesn't just change regions, it also changes demographics. A 15-year-old American voting after school is going to have different tastes than a 22-year-old American voting at work or between college classes. The US percentages will change.

Regardless, US percentage is still a gauge of how well they'll do in the ASV. If Subby is dominating US this much, I can't see a great swing or anything.

Well, the NRT has gradually shifted away from "Get the best potential contest entrants in!" to "Vote for your favorites!" Which it was never meant to be.

The main problem is that best potential contest entrants are gone, all that's left is scraping the bottom of popular series and new characters from new games.

We should try an Oblivion character or maybe even the original Final Fantasy IMO.

SF64 was originally in the bracket -- it was just DKC2 that barely made it in with the drop/add-process. RBY won it, for those who don't know, with SF64 getting runner-up and DKC2 being honorable mention.

Now that it's over and done with, I'll say YOU PEOPLE never should have picked three Nintendo-games for the three slots. S&K, MM2 and MMX, and MGS3 would have been plenty viable options that also won their divisions...! S&K was the only one we didn't see anyway, but I think it would hadone better than some of the other Sonic games...if not the best of them.

Then when NRT guys started not making the contests despite getting NRT support, it kinda fell off.

Of course people are gonna vote for their favorites in the NRT. If the whole point is that the winner gets a spot, people will vote for who they want to get a spot. Those who want strong characters to make the field will vote for them, and those who want their favorites in the field will vote for them. It's up to the tournament organizer to control weak favorite entries in some other way because you can't count on people to vote for the supposed most deserving character over their favorites.
