Character Battle VIII - 65/80 - Today's Winners: Mario and Ike

Mario has been the obvious #4 in the contest since 2005.

I think 4-ways have been hiding his strength; Mario does not have the devoted fanbase that Link, FF7, or Snake has, but he thrives on recognizability. As a casual draw, it is easier for him to get SFFed in a 4-way than Link/Cloud/Snake.

While I still think Snake > Sephiroth is a silly pick, I might have been tempted to put Mario > Sephy in a future bracket, with the way FF7 has been sliding lately.

Take Mario > Sephiroth if you dare! Seph's already won that 3 times easily, nothing will change in a 4th.

It's hilarious that in terms of which game/franchise dropped the most, Sonic Team's no longer in contention. What seemed like weak performances may actually be decent, between Tails impressing against Kratos and Shadow losing to Ama, who then beasted on Luigi to make Shadow look decent. Knuckles is a whole other story, and we'll have to wait and see how Sonic does next round.

Hmmm...

Anyway, is this the first time Vivi made it to tyhe third round?

Sephiroth and FF7 has looked worse and worse each contest, plus I think FF7's slide, like Mario's strength, has been masked with 4-ways. FF7 is slowly becoming more and more irrelevant with age, but its heavily devoted fanbase keeps it looking stellar in 4-ways, as nothing, not even other new Square, can SFF FF7.

I don't think that Big Boss is a "4 way creation." (Have we found anyone who is?)

Naked Snake looked just as popular in Round 1. The real aberration here is why Big Boss did so well in Round 2 last year. Everything else matches up well.

Arthas, most likely. Though its probably a combination of Kefka getting stronger and Arthas not being as strong as 4ways.



This has to be one of the most stable first hours ever in terms of percentage. Mario finished only 0.01% off of where he was with the board vote.

Sonic Team is still definitely in contention. There's a very good case for Nintendo/Sonic SFF with Tails and Shadow (they weren't really as pathetic as they looked in 2007/8). Amaterasu did well on Luigi, but not well enough to be redeeming much, although Shadow's performance didn't really need to be redeemed in the first place- didn't most of us consider Shadow/Ammy a toss-up match before the contest? Sonic and above all Knuckles were what made Sonic Team look bad in round 1 in the first place.

MGS looking bad? Aside from Liquid, everyone is looking relatively okay so far. Big Boss could only get 34.8% on Mario in 2007 despite having a very recognizable SS/Naked Snake pic, now he is having 36-37% on Mario with a face picture that has less resemblance from Solid Snake/Naked Snake.

The Boss impressed against Cube and Red/Ocelot did respectably against MMX.

Hmmm...40% update for Big Boss there. Mario's vote intake has been dropping off at a much quicker rate than Big Boss's. Wonder if he can keep this up.

If you are going to expect huge differences in strength between 4-way and 1-on-1 matches, you are going to be disappointed. However, there does exist a difference between the two. Like I was saying earlier, casual draws are going to be slightly weaker in 1-on-1, while characters with devoted fanbases are stronger in 4-ways. Not much, but still a noticeable amount.

Note that how devoted a fanbase is does not have effect on the size of the fanbase. For example, Link has a large, devoted fanbase. Cloud's fanbase is just as devoted, and probably more so, but not as large. Mario has a larger fanbase than Cloud (and maybe even Link), but not nearly as devoted as either. All three of them, though, have fanbases that are both larger and more devoted than you typical mid-carder.

How does that translate into contest strength? Well, how large a fanbase answers the questions "Do you know this character?" and "Do you like this character?" How devoted a fanbase is answers the question "Would you vote for this character over most other characters?"

Thus, Cloud is stronger than Mario, despite the latter having a larger fanbase. More people like Mario, but a lot of Mario fans would abandon their vote for Cloud, while fewer Cloud fans would abandon their vote for Mario.

I agree with you on that one. He, Vincent, and Tifa were wasted here, due to both being underseeded and due to bracket position. Zelda, on the other hand, despite being so underseeded, has such soft bracket placement, and we at least get to see whether Samus will SFF her (because even though she only scored about 55% on her in '06, the consensus seems to be that Samus SFFd Midna in '07 and Ganondorf in '08, so...yeah).

Not only high midcarders on this site, but some of my favorite characters as well.

Don't forget Celes, even though she was in the Female Contest and got <40% on The Boss. It's funny how I always get The Boss matches right.

SFFed Rydia beat Marcus Fenix (hey, if Zack/Cecil SFF is possible, so is Auron/Rydia SFF) and Kain did as well on 2008 MC as Spy did on 2010 MC, though he did kinda stink in the vote-ins (#1 character in his poll not to make it, not that it means much when you lose to Spy and Ridley). Then again, I guess you could blame part of that on Jecht.

At any rate, I'd at least love to see Rydia return. It's not like we have many decently strong female characters!

As for fresh old-school FF characters to get in... It's probably between Fighter (most iconic of the FF1 characters besides maybe Black Mage, which Vivi already has covered), Shadow, Mog (mascot appeal, though I think he's going to be pretty weak now), and Bartz (for a good laugh).
