Star and Turds of Round 1: Gear Division

Star of the Division – Commander Shepard
It was expected that Shepard would get a boost from the release of Mass Effect 2, but the amount he defeated Ellis was impressive. Sure Ellis is weak, but Shepard managed to triple the guy scoring one of the biggest wins of the contest. Had his round 2 opponent been a lot weaker I think people would be hyping for the upset. Still after looking terrible last year I think the new look suits Shepard a lot better.

Runner-up – Pikachu
While Pokemon looked as strong as ever there was still a group of people that think Pikachu suffers from anti-votes. Tripling Banjo quickly put an end to that. Pikachu continues to show that he should be one of the most feared characters of the bracket. Too bad he’s been given one of the most predictable paths in the bracket, though considering how well Pokemon has done in this contest Snake better watch out.

Turd of the Division – Darth Revan
This award goes more to his fans than to Darth Revan. Some people expected way too much of him and it pretty much ended up backfiring majorly. Expecting to double HK-47 before SFF was pretty ridiculous, especially when L-Block failed to do so earlier in the round. Those people also ignored the fact that Old Final Fantasy was looking pretty good so far and even stated that Terra had no chance in that match. Revan’s expectations were just too high to live up to and losing to Terra was the end result.

Runner-up – Lloyd Irving
After Kratos Aurion lost to Sackboy a lot of people lowered their expectations for Lloyd. Despite that Lloyd still managed to not live up to those expectations. Fox may be a decent competitor, but he shouldn’t have put a performance that good on high fodder. Even after Tales of Symphonia’s surprising win in the games contest it looks like the characters are beginning to fade away.

Star and Turds of Round 1: Jenova Division

Star of the Division – Missingno
I may be in the minority here, but while everyone is smashing Crono for losing I think this was more about Missingno looking awesome than it was Crono failing. Before the match very few people gave Missingno any kind of chance against him. Missingno jumped to the early lead and was able to hold on long enough for rallying at the end to give it the push it needed to win. I don’t know why some people automatically think Crono dropped to a mid-card because of this loss; I see no reason to believe that Crono is not among characters like Vincent and Squall, which makes this performance very impressive for the glitch.

Runner-up – Big Daddy
In the previous contest Big Daddy lost to Balthier in his only match. With Bioshock 2 just released about a week ago Big Daddy was just a couple of percent off from performing as well as Mega Man X did on Price. While Price is probably stronger than Soap it is still a good performance nevertheless. It at least puts him as the favourite to win over Ness in the second round who also looked pretty good this round.

Turd of the Division – Crono
While my stance on Crono is well known causing the fall of the noble nine and the lack of competition gives Crono the turd of the division award. When we first created the noble nine in 2003 I don’t think anyone envisioned it lasting this long, heck some people were calling the fall of the group in the next contest. Most people expected Sonic to break the group later this contest and while Crono isn’t in a much better position his path was pretty calm. Still the fall of a long tradition was a bit much for some people to take. The Noble Nine will still be remembered and used for years, but now it is only a title.

Runner-up – Gordon Freeman
After his win in GameSpot Freeman received some hype that he could challenge Tifa in the second round. Instead Freeman not only showed that he won’t be in contention against Tifa, but he also showed signs of struggle against Peach at the beginning of the match. Even if we ignore the Tifa hype this performance falls well below Freeman’s performance in four-ways, it’s almost as if The Orange Box has started to age.

Anyone who follows these contests and thought Gordon would be strong because he managed to narrowly avoid getting doubled by Samus with Ganondorf in the poll is a either an idiot or a fanboy.

What do you guys think of doing a contest after this for characters in video games that didn't originate there. Like a 64 man contest with noms and everything, and then the top 32 of that contest square off against the final 32 of this contest.

Like the contest is exclusive to characters that didn't originate in video games, but were placed in video games afterwards. (Batman, Simba, Neo, etc.)

I think it would definitely put an interesting spin on future contests to have these characters eligible, but in their own contest (then squaring off against the elite of the original character contest). It would totally throw things for a spin and people looking for that 'freshness' would get it, while we would also get to see some awesome matches going down.

Simba vs. Bowser?
Batman vs. Samus?
Neo (The One) vs. Crono?
Juggernaut vs. Ganondorf?
Superman vs. Link/Cloud?
John Maclean vs. Mega Man?
Judge Dredd vs. Vincent?

I mean these all have potential to be awesome matches, and those are just a few characters that could be involved. There would be limitless potential (I mean those are just characters off the top of my head) and it would make the contest fun again without having to bandwagon on stupidity like MissingNo and L-Block.

This could be called to Bacon's attention if we got enough gusto behind it. But that would require you guys not treating me like crap just for suggesting it. I'm just trying to be constructive.

I am so on board on with having a Fictional Character Contest. Still don't think that it should be mixed with our VG characters though.

We're probably getting one later this year anyway. We wouldn't be having the contest so early if Bacon didn't have something up his sleeve and it's probably something as big/bigger than the current contest. We're not gonna see another Games Contest so soon, since games probably aren't that transitive between years, so what else would it be?
