Some Common Stat Topic Lingo Defined*~ SFF (Same Fanbase Factor) - Same Fanbase Factor is the theory that, if two contestants share a common fanbase, the weaker of the two options will underperform in a direct matchup. For instance, Link was expected to defeat Ganon with 65% of the vote in 2004, based on their 2003 values. Instead, Link collected near 88% of the vote, because the Zelda fanbase so clearly sided with him. However, take some SFF labels with a grain of salt, as many people will slap it onto any match that doesn't make total sense. This has caused a few SFF jokes, with LordOfDabu's "Some Frivolous Factor" being the funniest of them. X-Stats - Short form of Extrapolated Statistics, aka the mathematical "strength" of a contestant that can be determined based on their performance in any given matchup. See above for a detailed explanation of the x-stat process. Noble Nine - Link, Cloud, Sephiroth, Mario, Crono, Solid Snake, Sonic, Samus and Mega Man. Near-Elite - The Squall, Auron, Tifa, Vincent, Zelda, Kirby, etc group that has come at, near or even ahead of Noble Nine characters in the past. The Fodder Line - A final X-Stat value of 15% or below. For other information, surf the contest sites a bit. Heart Division Grades! Sora - I heard a lot of people saying they were disappointed with Sora's performance here, but he did about what I expected. Midna's not as bad as people think she is. Still, nothing too impressive. Just average. Grade: C Midna - Not much to say about this match. It was pretty boring. I think Midna did well enough to confirm that her match against Mewtwo last year wasn't a total fluke, which is good enough for me. Grade: C Laharl - Congratulations, you won a match after six years of trying. Grade: B Neku Sakuraba - Congratulations, you lost to Laharl. Now wait for another 5-6 years and you'll get to win one, too! Grade: F Kefka - He pulled one of the bigger shockers of round 1 by not only beating Arthas, but by absolutely demolishing him. Ike's underwhelming performance should have been a bit of a clue for us, but still, this is Kefka we're talking about, right? Then DISSIDIA happened, or something. I'm curious to see how well he does against Bowser next round to see if this was Kefka getting stronger or Arthas just being awful, but still, this was only Kefka's 2nd good performance ever (The other being Kefka/Wesker, of course). Grade: A Arthas Menethil - I'm still confused as to how Arthas managed to lose this one, and not just lose, but not even break 40% on Kefka. Easily in the top (or bottom) 5 worst performances of the round. Grade: F Bowser - Like Sora, Bowser did just about what I expected him to (My Oracle was only .02% off!). 63% on Frog certainly isn't as impressive as it used to be, especially as we've seen Chrono Trigger bomb left and right in recent years. He did what he needed to going into that showdown with Sora, but he's still the underdog. The match against Kefka should be pretty telling, I think. Grade: C Frog - Is it an accomplishment when you put up the least embarrassing Chrono Trigger performance? It's a bit of a disappointment when we see Frog have a contest appearance where he doesn't have a close match. I guess my expectations are too high! Grade - C L-Block - Well, the Cube and GlaDOS beating bottom feeding fodder was one thing, but HK-47, while not particularly strong, was another thing. How would the Block do? Well, it did just fine, thanks for asking! 64% on HK-47 isn't particularly great (Less than 2004 Sora got and he probably did that on a stronger HK-47 than L-Block faced), but it proved that it's a solid midcarder and not just a total 4-way wonder. Grade: B+ HK-47 - He was never competitive in this match against L-Block, but I'm not sure why anyone actually expected him to be. He's just not known enough to beat something virtually everyone knows. The apathy votes will go to L-Block, and after seeing Missingno, the anti-joke vote doesn't seem to be much of a factor. Grade: D Isaac - Isaac did a good job of dismantling a bottom feeding fodder character, but he doesn't have a chance of beating L-Block next round. He's in the same position HK-47 was. He's just not known enough. At least he got a win though! Grade: B Professor Layton - Critical thinking is not the key to contest success. Grade: F Charizard - Charizard won the NRT, and he proved that Board 8 made the right decision with a completely dominant performance of the Duke (IN AMERICA). I wasn't entirely convinced that Charizard would be the strongest Pokemon (Of course, this was when I was assuming Pikachu was the strongest, and so Charizard probably still isn't the strongest indirectly, I guess!), but at the very least, he proved he's probably on Pikachu's level, if not above. I'm still somewhat skeptical of the Duke's strength at this point, but it's hard to take anything away from how good the 'Zard looked. Grade: A --- "The great GF...Bahamut." "...GF? I...? Using my powers...It is you humans...I fear..." |
LeonhartFour | Posted 2/16/2010 2:47:09 PM | message detail |
Duke
Nukem - This was a pretty sad performance from the Duke, but I'm not
entirely surprised, despite my low Oracle prediction for Charizard.
There was a part of me that questioned the Duke's 4-way strength and
wondered if he wasn't just a product of 4-ways. I know a lot of people
doubt the format making a whole lot of difference, but there are a
couple of characters who make me wonder (Hayabusa and Arthas are two
others). Either way, this wasn't a good showing for Duke unless
Charizard turns out to be a world beater. Grade: F Kratos - Speaking of characters who feel like 4-way wonders, we have Kratos. Only 61% on Tails? After how bad Sonic, Knuckles, and Shadow looked, and how bad Tails looked last year? Suddenly, Kratos goes from being a decent favorite against Charizard to an overwhelming underdog with this performance, coupled with Charizard's dominance of Duke Nukem. That's how bad this match was. I won't give him an F though, because at least he won. Grade: D- Miles "Tails" Prower - Like with Frog and Chrono Trigger, is having the least embarrassing performance for Sonic Team something to be proud of? Most people expected Tails to get doubled, and instead, he nearly broke 40% here. Not bad. Grade: B Stars of the Division: Kefka and Charizard Turds of the Division: Arthas Menethil and Kratos --- "The great GF...Bahamut." "...GF? I...? Using my powers...It is you humans...I fear..." |

Star and Turds of Round 1: Midgar Division Star of the Division – Vault Boy In a division of few stars Vault Boy takes the award. While few people thought he was terrible fodder very few didn’t expect him to be much stronger than regular fodder. Instead Vault Boy surprises even his biggest fans by breaking 39% on a well respected character. As finding new good characters has become more of a chore it is refreshing when one of them pans out decently. I’m sure that I’m not alone in that Vault Boy is a great addition to the contest family. Runner-up – Sackboy A lot of people were cautious about Sackboy; in most of his previous polls he has looked pretty bad even when you consider that he has been give worst case scenarios as opponents. A lot of people who went with him were riding on the fact that having his game released would make him at least stronger than high fodder and it looks like they were right. Sackboy quite easily won over Kratos Aurion and while a lot of people like to blame the opponent I feel that it was Sackboy that won this match. Turd of the Division – Cloud Strife Blowouts at this point were a thing of the past, but this was Cloud, the second strongest character of the bracket against a fairly weak opponent. So what does the guy do? He fails to double Ridley for 40 minutes and comes nowhere close to the high 70s prediction which was deflated after so few blowouts. Was it people recognizing Ridley because he has a Smash Bros. picture or has Cloud developed even more anti-votes. Runner-up – Riku This was expected to have been an easy win for Riku, Ramza was after all as weak as Laharl, as weak as Laharl should not get you above 37.5% on Riku. Had Captain Falcon not look so hot in his match as well I think a lot of people would have switched sides in that second round match. Riku has taken quite the fall from grace since the release of Kingdom Hearts 2; I guess most people haven’t noticed since he still manages to do what people expected of him though with a less than convincing win. --- Board 8 BOP: http://www.freewebs.com/charmander6000/CB8%20BOP.xls Character Battle VIII - 51/62 - Today's Winners: Tifa and Gordon Freeman |

Varia Division Grades Samus Aran - Scored one of the biggest blowouts of the round and put up one of the more impressive performances from a Noble Niner in the first round. I doubt Samus does quite that well against PoP with his Sands of Time pic, but strong showing. Grade: A Prince of Persia - Yikes, what an abysmal picture and an abysmal performance. Not much more to say than that. Grade: F Niko Bellic - I had a bad feeling. This is the way! Grade: F Jill Valentine - Shut up, yoblazer. Grade: A+ Roxas - He did a good job of beating Heavy despite some early rallying and put up nearly 57% by the time it was all said and done. He seems to be stronger than ever after 358/2 Days, but it's probably not enough to beat Sub-Zero. Grade: B- Heavy - LOL ExTha picked you to win. Grade for Heavy: C Grade for ExTha: LOL Tidus - Bah, another year, another early loss. I was hoping he would at least be competitive against Sub-Zero, but alas, it was not meant to be. At least he didn't get blown out. One of these days! Grade: C- Sub-Zero - He continues to prove year in and year out that he's a solid midcarder in these things. The guy never seems to have a bad performance, and he beat Tidus pretty easily. I'll be interested to see what he can do against Samus. Grade: A- Phoenix Wright - I was pretty impressed with how close Phoenix was able to keep this match. He prevented Jecht from pulling away too easily, though the fact that he got to avoid the day vote probably helped him in that regard. In a 24 hour match, he probably only gets 45% or so, but in a 12 hour night match, Wrighto is probably a decent low midcarder. Grade: C+ Jecht - He withstood and overcame the early Phoenix Wright board vote and slowly pulled away the rest of the match. I kinda thought he'd do better than this, but like I said with PW, in a full 24 hour match or in a day match, he'd probably get 55%+, so this isn't too bad. He wasn't going to be as strong as Tidus, Yuna, or Rikku, but he showed he wasn't total fodder, at least. Grade: B- Ratchet - Friendly reminder: If you haven't played a Ratchet & Clank game yet, you should. Preferably immediately and in sequential order. Oh, and Ratchet finally won a match after 7 years. This is a bigger surprise than Laharl being put in a winnable match, by the way. Grade: A Ratchet & Clank Series Grade: A+++ (Play it now) Eddie Riggs - Have you ever wondered how bad someone would have to be to get doubled by Ratchet? Well, now we know! We'll probably never see Eddie Riggs again either. Grade: F Travis Touchdown - He did a lot better than I thought he would against Zelda. I was pretty confident that she'd at least triple him with ease, and he nearly got 30% here. It's hard to chalk that up entirely to NMH2 considering it only sold 30,000 copies that first week, but who knows? Grade: B Princess Zelda - Pretty underwhelming performance by Zelda here, to be honest. If her path weren't completely set in stone, I'd be worried, but since it is, it doesn't really matter. Grade: C- Ezio Auditore da Firenze - Not even 60% on Simon Belmont? Gross. As much damage control as Curt has tried to lay on this match, there's no getting around how bad this performance was. You'd think AC2 being better received and Ezio looking just like Altair would have helped him out more, but I guess not. Just drop the "da Firenze" from his name next round because that's a ridiculously long title. Grade: D- Simon Belmont - Well, he looked pretty decent in the vote-in poll, and apparently, it wasn't a total fluke. Not entirely sure what to make of this match though. Grade: B --- "Hold on a minute! That testimony stinks!" "Witness! You can't just say 'Hello' and expect us to get anywhere! I want you to testify!" |
