Eh, I think the casual bracketmaker is pretty familiar with the finals/semis in contests if not much else. They're also familiar with matches that attract a lot of attention (Mario/Cloud, Mario/Crono, etc.)

Star and Turds of Round 1: Chaos Division

Star of the Division – Altair
Altair/Liquid was quite the hyped match pre-contest though Liquid was a pretty big favourite based on his previous contest also a lot of people didn’t expect Altair to get a boost from Assassin’s Creed II since he wasn’t even in the game. Altair went into the match and exceeded even his supporters’ expectations. Even if you were to bring Liquid down to his 2007 performance the boost that Altair must have gotten from that game is amazing. This puts Altair in a great position to take on Vivi in the next round.

Runner-up – Lightning
Final Fantasy XIII may be GameFAQs’ most hyped game, but people weren’t expecting much out of Lightning due to her game not being out in North America. In a match where Sonic needed to look good quickly turned to Lightning giving us a great preview of what is to be expected next contest. As long as the game doesn’t end up becoming a total flop it seems like she’ll be at least a high mid-card.

Turd of the Division – Knuckles the Echidna
While he doesn’t look as bad now as he did back then there isn’t really anyone that could have surpassed the terrible performance that Knuckles did. This was supposed to be an easy win for the echidna on route to being killed by Sonic in round 2. When the poll started Knuckles may have started in the lead, but he was nowhere near the percent that he should have been. At one point it looked as if Cecil would take the lead, but Knuckles was able to pull through preventing the embarrassment of his life. It seems that the Sonic team was as weak as ever and while it doesn’t look as bad now it isn’t good.

Runner-up – Ken
Like Knuckles Ken doesn’t look as bad now as he did earlier this round, but there isn’t anyone in this division that could have filled his spot and it still doesn’t quite undo what we thought of him back then. Despite never making a contest since 2003 Ken was expected to easily win over Wesker, instead we were treated to one of the best matches of the round where it took the ASV of the west coast before Ken pulled through with a narrow win. Ken may have looked better after seeing the Resident Evil 5 boost, but at the time it was pretty bad.

Freeman losing to Pre Brawl Ike was before Orange Box. The second round after Orange Box came out was where he destroyed Duke.

Demyx is better than Axel.

Gordon's ASV won't be terrible like Jill's, plus this format's been diluting the ASV to some degree and weather has probably canceled a lot of schools today. With issues like that, overcoming almost 1,100 votes should be pretty difficult.

BTW, it's absolutely AMAZING how incredibly linear those vote-in polls have turned out to be. I was definitely in the boat of "multi-way polls with no pics, they can't be all that linear, people should only use them as a vague indicator" camp.

But they've ended up being way more than that - they're just about linear as hell, LFF aside (e.g. Aerith/Cid). It's ridiculous.

That's true. If there's anything to take from this contest so far, it's that it doesn't really matter how many characters are in the poll- characters still behave the same way. (Sorry Ulti, although the point about variance being higher in 4-ways stands, so LOL 4WAYS still has some use)

That's part of the reason why Megaman/Yoshi was so funny- because MM got almost as much as the entire Mario cast did on Yoshi. It's not really the same thing though (massive SFF and, it's a different question, who is your favorite Mario character and which character do you want to win this poll)

For what it's worth about the vote-ins, it's rare if ever we get contest-polls asking us to support characters in the contest so close to the contest. Yes, we've had polls like "Which upset would you most like to see" and "Who do you think will win," but the vote-ins were asking you for who you would most like to see in the contest which implies favoritism for the individual character you vote for more than the others. The vote-ins were just a month old compared to 2008's matches being over a year old, too.

When you look past the LFF and accept it's a huge multi-way poll that can't be taken for complete accuracy, it can surprise you with how accurate it really is.

For the record, KP, I believe your R3 pic really helped RBY last year. Had it gotten the same percentage against OOT the next round, it would have been about dead even with FFX despite FF8 being replaced with Melee (which is a point for MGS > FFX, since there was an extra Nintendo game in FFX's poll).

Star and Turds of Round 1: Mushroom Division

Star of the Division – Zack Fair
There were a lot of questions surrounding Zack at the beginning of the contest, would he be as strong as he showed in four-ways. It took all of five seconds to answer that with a confident yes. Yuna is by no means a weak entrant and here Zack was able to defeat her with little trouble. The numbers that he put on her suggest that he is just a step below the near elites which is pretty good considering he’s rarely in Final Fantasy VII and only has a PSP game.

Runner-up – Mega Man
After Crono and Sonic it was Mega Man that looked the most vulnerable over the past few contests. While Cid wasn’t supposed to defeat him many people had him doing fairly well on the Blue Bomber. Mega Man on the other hand decided to go above a lot of people’s expectations and pull in a nice performance. Very few people thought he could lose in the next round, but after that performance even less think that right now.

Turd of the Division – Ryu Hayabusa
Hayabusa was expected to have a good chance against Master Chief in the following round. Instead he has a worse performance against Crash than KOS-MOS did in 2003, of course over the past two years it seems that Crash has gone up in strength, but nevertheless Hayabusa should have won by a lot more. If it wasn’t for Master Chief not looking the greatest either I think the hype for that match would be totally dead.

Runner-up – Ike
This was going to have been Ike’s post-Brawl match with no Nintendo characters to show off his strength, but in the end Ike fell flat on his face. Prinny, a character that got in solely on board support was able to put up a rather decent performance. I would have trouble not calling Ike a flop even if this was Laharl in the match. This however has caused some hype next round with Zidane around the corner.
