Eddie riggs is a turd, no doubt about it, but is he a bigger turd than Magus/Liquid Snake/Sonic/Knuckles, i doubt so.

we at least half expected these guys to not do so well though, jack black was setting standards though, well the fodder of the fodder of round 1 all deserve a group turd, like Layton, Fawful and Sandal for being bad to the point where they make Tanner look good.

Sephiroth may be down hundreds of votes at the freeze... and in dead hours, rallying/stuffing is a lot more effective which benefits joke characters.

Rallying would be more effective in the dead hours, but that comes at the disadvantage that it's harder to rally then because way less people are online.

How much of a lead do you think Missingno needs to withstand the night vote and FFVII total domination zone? Going by L-Block/Snake in round 4 of 2007, L-Block got a 1828 vote lead in about 3 hours and that lead was down to 816 by 12:00 PM, which is when the match would end for Sephiroth/Missingno. Sephiroth will have a stronger night vote than Snake, so I think Missingno needs to get it up to at least 3000 to win.

After thinking about it, Link making a huge comeback with the ASV on Missingno in the final, one in which the Missingno rallies/stuffers are just overwhelmed, would be a better ending to the contest than Missingno winning it all. It would mean that not every joke of the year can beat Link, and Crono would still end up above 49.5% on the winner.

Missingno is going to need a massive lead to hold off Link's ASV. L-Block got a 6695 vote lead overnight on Link and with the morning vote, Link couldn't quite cut 1000 votes off that lead before L-Block took control of the match again. Since there are only 2 characters to deal with, Missingno will need a lead larger than 6695. I guess a 10000 vote lead by morning will make the match a lock for Missingno.

I also noticed that Missingno's last 2 matches of the contest (if he makes it that far) will be on the weekend. That means Cloud will die come morning and Link will start beasting like crazy when the morning starts.

Match LXIV: (2) Gordon Freeman vs. (15) Princess Peach

Information

Name: Gordon Freeman
Game/Series: Half-Life
Previous Contest: 2008
Performance: 3rd in round 3

Name: Princess Peach
Game/Series: Super Mario Bros.
Previous Contest: 2007
Performance: 3rd in round 1

Analysis

Final match of the round, we had a great start to the contest and while it faded a bit later in the round I say that this contest has been a success. We end the round with the winner of the GameSpot contest. Will another site have an effect on GameFAQs or will GFNW resurrect itself from the grave.

Some people believe that Gordon Freeman will get a boost in strength because of his performance in the GameSpot contest. The problem is that while they may be closely connected GameSpot is another site and I’m not even sure if that many people beyond this board actually paid close attention to it. Another problem is that a boost in performance usually only comes from new characters doing well, but Freeman has been a contest staple since 2002. Unless the guy gets another rally I don’t see him boosting.

Of course that doesn’t mean Freeman is weak. Ever since the release of The Orange Box Freeman has looked a lot better in contests and while he doesn’t have a chance next round he should be the massive favourite over Peach. Still the people that think Freeman will break 60% are kind of aiming high though most of those people think Freeman could be a threat to Tifa so it makes sense.

When it comes to apathy Peach has one of the largest groups. She may be one of the most known characters in the bracket, but that doesn’t mean everyone likes her. Her last contest she was stuck against Meta Knight who surprised a lot of people by defeating her, though Brawl hype was huge at the time. While people like to laugh at the female bracket it only got ridiculous in the last few rounds, I feel that Peach’s performances against Jill and Tifa were legit which puts her at around the fodder line to low mid-card.

For Peach to win she would either have to invoke the power of GFNW or hope that her apathy votes pull through which I don’t think it will in this match. I would find it funny if Freeman decides to lose after looking decent over the past two years.

charmander6000’s Bracket: Gordon Freeman > Princess Peach

charmander6000’s Prediction: Gordon wins, 57.47% - 42.53%

I think Peach wins as of now. There's just so much against Freeman that it's not even funny.

Yes Freeman has the mathematical advantage (putting 34% on LFFd Samus last year is probably better than anything Peach can do), the cool advantage, and possibly isn't even hurt that badly by Peach's name factor, but Half-Life always likes to mess around with us in contests. Look for this match to be another Altair > Liquid Snake.

Then again most of us were calling for Half-Life 2's head in the games contest after seeing other FPSs look horrible combined with New Square doing well, and HL2 managed to edge out FFXII quite easily. Then again, there goes more evidence for Half-Life just loving to mess around with us in contests, always making fools of us for either overestimation or underestimation. What's even more stupid is that with Crono losing in the first round, I'm not even worried about Freeman anymore.

Star and Turds of Round 1: Hyrule Division

Star of the Division – Amaterasu
A main question when the format was confirmed was what changes in terms of character strength would there be. One that had a large support was that the Sonic characters were suppose to go up in strength, especially since they are suppose to have shared a fanbase with Nintendo. Another prediction is that Amaterasu was suppose to be weaker in this format because while she performed well in four-ways Okami isn’t popular enough to have enough fans to do well in this format. Well despite all of that Amaterasu was able to take an early lead and ended up winning rather comfortably. Even the bracket markers were caught off-guard causing this match to have one of the lowest prediction percents.

Runner-up – Captain John Price
While he didn’t win the expectations for Price were rather low. A lot of people were comparing him to MacMillan pre-contest which goes to show you how much the board knows about certain games. Price was able to exceed expectations by causing Mega Man X, a character that some people would credit to being as strong as Mega Man to fail to double him. The win was so great that it prompted some people to hype that the site shift was going towards western characters. While that didn’t quite happen it only makes Price’s win all the more impressive.

Turd of the Division – Magus
Pre-contest the first division was shaping up to be one of the best starts to the contest with the second match already being debated heavily. Alucard may have been the favourite, but that was more because people couldn’t bring themselves to go with Magus rather than trusting in Alucard. Well it looks like they were right in that regard, Magus should never be trusted to win a hyped match. Magus did not only lose he lost by more than even the biggest Alucard supporters thought he would lose by. Getting below 42% in this match was another step in his fall from grace from 2003.

Runner-up – Nathan Drake
During the GotY Nathan Drake received a lot of hype because of Uncharted 2’s performance. Uncharted 2 was one of the biggest releases of 2009 which should bode well for Nathan Drake. The hype was so ridiculous that some people even called Nathan losing impossible. After the Game of the Decade poll the hype dropped, but Nathan was still the heavy favourite, The Boss was after all not the strongest character in previous contests. The poll started and Nathan was out of it by the end of the board vote. While he ended his match looking respectful his expectations were a lot higher.

Ridley's showing really scared me, but then again Freeman isn't as anti-voted as Cloud for whatever reason and Peach is less cool than Ridley, so...whatever.

But I don't by Ridley being on Freeman's level at all, so something tells me that Peach is going to...oh well, see you a few hours before the match ends, because I'm gonna have to go to sleep (remember I live in Delhi so the time is 10 and a half hours ahead of the Eastern US where I used to live).

It's funny that I'm awake for the night matches but asleep during the day matches. Oh well.

Yep, I think Peach has this. I mostly picked Freeman to win because he is the star of the site's #1 American game according to the games contest x-stats, and practically everywhere else HL2 is the face of the current gaming generation. Heck, even on this site HL2 probably beats every game from this generation except for those that were heavily hyped and are from a very popular series. But game popularity cannot always translate into character popularity.

Still, now I think Peach is going to win. Also I have to say that if Freeman wins then his run this contest will be exactly like HL2's run in the games contest: there it was able to edge out a decent midcarder in the first round before finishing last against three games with top 20 potential (heck according to the x-stats even GoldenEye and Super Mario Bros. finish last in HL2's place!). This time it'll be Freeman edging out a low midcarder in round 1 before getting beaten by a high midcarder in round 2. Seems that Freeman needs fourways to have interesting contests.
