For one thing, Board 8 probably wouldn't be such tight-asses about joke characters.

For another, Board 8 probably wouldn't have been so obsessed with CATS and he wouldn't have made the 2003 contest, which I definitely have no problem with.

Missingno gets wrecked in 2002. Tifa's pushing 77% as we near the end of the power hour. 81.04% is probably out of reach but I will keep hoping.

I think pokemon overperforms in the sprite round. 2007 Pikachu, 2008 Pikachu and Mewtwo, it's not conclusive but it's a pattern.

Bacon's fanboyism is what permitted Cecil to boost to compete with Knuckles in a day vote. Half was the Dissidia boost contributes 5% to all FF characters in it. The other half was Bacon's fanboyism contributed the other 5%. Sonic falling is what contributed the last 10% half of the match

After thinking about it, Link making a huge comeback with the ASV on Missingno in the final, one in which the Missingno rallies/stuffers are just overwhelmed, would be a better ending to the contest than Missingno winning it all. It would mean that not every joke of the year can beat Link, and Crono would still end up above 49.5% on the winner.

Mushroom Division Grades!

Mario - Hey, at least someone broke 80% in this contest, even if he needed SFF to do it! That's worth something!

Grade: B

Falco Lombardi - I wonder if he would've done better against Cloud or Sephy than Ridley or Marth did? Who knows or cares?

Grade: F

Big Boss - I think some people were surprised with how badly Big Boss beat Edgeworth, but this was about what I expected for two reasons: 1. I firmly believe that Big Boss is up there with the rest of the near elites (with the likes of Sora, Ganondorf, etc. though I don't know how many of those guys I'd take him over), and 2. Edgeworth isn't anywhere near as strong as Phoenix. Hoping Big Boss can confirm this with a solid round 2 showing against Mario!

Grade: A-

Miles Edgeworth - Hey, Big Boss/Edgeworth was one of the best match pics of the contest (the other featuring that other guy from Ace Attorney)! That has to count for something, right? Well, at least he'd beat Guybrush.

Grade: F

Zidane Tribal - Pretty underwhelming performance for Zidane against Claptrap. Maybe Claptrap is just stronger than we thought, but I doubt it's by a whole lot. Zidane's just lucky that Ike laid an even bigger egg than he did, but he's probably still the underdog going into round 2. I'm giving him a shot at him, at least, which is more than I was giving him pre-contest.

Grade: C-

Claptrap - Still not sure if the match was Zidane being weak or Claptrap just being actually decent fodder. It's hard to say. It's hard to give any sort of conclusive grade with someone like this.

Grade: D

Ike - Ike would have needed a pretty bad performance after what Zidane did to cause anyone to doubt his chances of winning next round. Well, guess what? He delivered! Only 62.5% on Prinny? A relatively tame ASV after having such a strong one the last two years? At least he finally got past the first round, but this was a sorry performance.

Grade: D+

Prinny - Well, at least Prinny made me feel like the Guru nomination wasn't wasted. I don't know many people who expected him to do this well. He did so well that we're left wondering if he could beat Laharl! Well done, Prinny!

Grade: C+

Mega Man - It's been a while since Mega Man's put up a performance that's really impressed me, but he did it here. Nearly doubling Cid after one hour? That was one of the most surprising moments of the contest so far for me, to be honest. I really thought Cid was going to turn out to be pretty strong and break 40% on the Blue Bomber with ease, and even after a strong FFVII night vote, he was still nowhere close. Good job, Mega Man.

Grade: A+

Cid Highwind - I hate it when NRT guys don't do well because I take a lot of pride in being the host of this thing and feeling like I'm trying to do a good job of getting fresh blood in here. Don't get me wrong or anything. Cid's still a decent midcarder, but this was a pretty underwhelming performance out of him. I thought he'd be stronger than this.

Grade: D

Zack Fair - This was a good match for Zack. He proved last year's run was legit and not just a result of bandwagons, flukes, or what have you. He managed to do better on Yuna than Zelda did in 2006, which is pretty impressive. He's firmly established himself as the #5 FFVII guy and worthy of being a regular in these contests. I don't know if he's quite a near elite, but he's close.

Grade: B+

Yuna - This was a match where both sides come out looking pretty good. Zack proved his strength was legit, and Yuna proved that she's a pretty solid midcarder herself. She managed to avoid getting SFF'd and stayed above 40%. Yes, I did have her winning, but that was a long shot. I'm still glad she did as well as she did.

Grade: C

"Why must we always choose between certain death and probable death?"
"I'm in an epic battle to the death, FIGURE IT OUT YOURSELF!"
LeonhartFour | Posted 2/15/2010 10:43:15 PM | message detail
Ryu Hayabusa - Man, try to give a guy who's got Hayabusa > Chief next round some confidence about his pick, why don't ya? Crash is higher on the fodder chain than a lot of people are willing to give him credit for, but this was still a pretty sorry performance, not to mention this match getting the lowest vote totals of the contest so far. I've always wondered if Hayabusa was just a 4-way creation, and this match did nothing to quell those doubts.

Grade: D

Crash Bandicoot - This guy's probably never going to win anything again, but he sure finds a way to embarrass people. I remember him winning several match updates in 2007 against Magus, Bomberman, and Phoenix Wright. Now he makes Hayabusa look pretty bad. You know what they say: Misery loves company, and Crash is out to make everyone miserable. Don't let that stupid smile deceive you.

Grade: C

Master Chief - It's like this division was full of, "Hey, you thought YOUR performance was bad? Look at THIS!" matches. First we had Ike trying to show up (or show down, maybe?) Zidane, and now Master Chief does his best to make Hayabusa look better against Spy. Even MC's traditional ASV power didn't show up. Some people want to blame that on Spy rallying, and there's probably some credibility in that, but it shouldn't have neutralized his ASV completely. It should have just lessened its effectiveness. After we've seen several other western characters fail to take advantage of the ASV, I'd be somewhat concerned about Chief next round. After all, the fact that he had a day match with Hayabusa next round was supposed to be the deal breaker there, and now...

Grade: D

Spy - A good show from Spy here, though making Master Chief look bad isn't exactly the most difficult task. Heck, even CATS was able to do it. Still, this is supposed to be the strongest we've ever seen Chief in a 1-on-1 setting (though I don't exactly buy that). At the very least, Spy proved himself to be high fodder/maybe low midcard with this match, and maybe he could win one next year if he can manage to get a good seed.

Grade: C+
