Crono beat Mario at one point. Mario beat Cloud and Cloud is a higher tier as well. Sonic was stronger than Crono at one point but that doesn't seem to be true anymore.

His placement of Sonic is defintely on the high side, but it isn't that unreasonable.

Even in 2006 before the Sonic Team freefall, he could barely manage 45% on Snake. He doesn't deserve to be in that same tier. At best, he's on Crono's tier.

And you have to throw Auron into that tier with Sonic, Snake, Samus, Mega Man, and Mario if you want to keep Sonic up there.

And if Squall beats him, then you have to bring Squall up there, too.

So Crono and Vincent can just be two lonely losers on a tier all their own.

I think currently the characters strengths are not really conducive to tiermaking. It's hard to put Link and Sephiroth on the same tier, when the gap between them is probably wider than between Sephiroth and Snake. Again, the gap between Snake and Mario is probably larger than between Mario and whoever is in front in the Megaman/Crono/Missingno/Vincent/Squall group, so it's hard to isolate the Snake/Samus/Mario group as a tier.

Looking at round 2, I really hope Gordon/Peach will be a good match. The first good match in second round looks like it will be Vivi/Altair, the 8th match of the second round.

If Sonic could give Mario a match, it would be due to some sort of Mario vs Sonic rivalry factory not because Sonic is actually close to Mario in strength.

So now that we've seen all of the N9 in action (no I don't care about dumb controversy, I'm going to keep calling them the N9), rank their performances based on your expectations

Mega Man- Impressed for the first time in, what, 5 years? He's still got some left in the tank!
Samus- Complete blowout of a once-decent character. Even with a big pic advantage, it was impressive.
Mario- SFF beatdown is still a beatdown in a contest with very few of them.
Solid Snake- Just looked 'okay'. People expected a bit higher, but we haven't seen Proto Man in a while and Mega Man as a whole seems to be on the rise for whatever reason.
Link- A bit disappointing, especially after Arthas flopped.
Sephiroth- Basically did what Cloud did, but he was expected to do a bit worse. And it's Sephiroth, who knows what he's gonna do.
Cloud- Awful performance. Even if it was just anti-votes, doesn't spell good things for later on.
Sonic- Just looked like crap. You don't let a character without a game, even a hyped game, get 34% on you.
Crono- Yeah.

Although honestly, the only reason I put Sonic above Crono is because Sonic at least gets to move on. I would still take Crono to beat Sonic fairly easily. >_>

I picked Geno for this match and I honestly can't remember why. Logic says Ness wins. My gut said...well, nothing, really. And I don't give a damn about either one of them anymore. So why? What made me do it?

Whatever it was, it cost me my third match in a row. Which means my first automatic loss in Round 2. No hoping for miracle wins from Roxas or Yoshi this time!

Pretty sure I'm going to look back on this contest as The Year Of WTF Was I Thinking.

Good tier:
Samus - Most impressive beatdown among the top characters by a lot.
Mega Man - I really thought Cid would make it close. Very impressive, especially after Auron/Aerith.
Mario - Biggest win of the round and perhaps the contest.

Meh tier:
Link - Link and Snake were both mildly disappointing, but my Oracle for Link was slightly better and he had the disadvantage of a night match.
Snake - See Link.
Sephiroth - Marth only did a little better than I would have expected pre-contest.

Bad tier:
Sonic - That performance on Lightning was pretty pitiful, but he goes over Cloud by virtue of the night disadvantage.
Cloud - Awful. I'm not sure who the strongest Ninty character that people would have taken to get 28% on Cloud but I bet some would have bitten on Luigi/Bowser/Yoshi.

Remember how close Shadow got to Mario?

It's just like in sports: in rivalry games, you throw the stats out the window. Not that I'd take Sonic to win the match, but I do think his strength against Mario would be different than it would be against any other character.

Gordon would have to get 90-10'd to beat Crono for that title.

Solid looks wonderful compared to Cloud but not particularly impressive against Sephiroth.


Also, about Mario/Sonic -- not only have they never faced off in a character battle, they've never even been in the same half of the bracket! They've been on opposite sides every year except 2006...where Mario was reserved for the Battle Royale. We were close to seeing SMB/Sonic in the Series Contest though, and we've seen some Mario-games face Sonic games.

I'm not sure what to think of Mario vs. Sonic, which is another reason we should see it. On the one hand, the old rivalry should help Sonic keep it close, but on the other hand, I get the feeling a big portion of Sonic's fans these days are younger Nintendo gamers who have only a vague notion of what the rivalry was and are firmly on Nintendo's side of it in any case.
