As somebody mentioned, he's doing better than Kerrigan did in 05. So I would take him over her.

Eh, this site is different now, for whatever the reason. Vincent probably couldn't get 79% on Kerrigan now himself.

Hey I want to ask if Missigno beats Crono will be a 1)upset,2)huge upset,3)massive upset and how likely it is to happen?I know that no-one knows the power of this joke character but are there any speculations?

It'd be a pretty massive upset if Missingno won. It'd basically have to be the strongest Pokemon to beat Crono, and I don't think it's got that kind of power.

As much as Missingno > Crono has been tossed around, I always assumed we were joking. Missingno > Crono would be one of the biggest upsets in contest history, imho.

Holy crap, 2 full topics of people debating fodder.

Who cares as long as deserving or interesting characters don't get snubbed? Except for Tales characters. They really are the bottom of the barrel and there will never be any strength from that stagnant, boring series of crap games.

L-Block 2007 will always be at the top of most improbable contest runs ever. Only StarCraft is even in the same league with that. Unless Missingno goes on to win the contest, it'd still be a big upset, but not #1.

And since we're discussing returning characters and we were discussing the NRT earlier, I was wondering who you guys think is most likely to win the Returners Tournament next year. I don't think there's any clear favorite like there have been in previous years, with Raiden, Fox, and Ken all managing to get in now.

Looking at last year's bracket, here are all the characters who seemed to do well:

Chun-Li
Morrigan Aensland
M. Bison
Master Hand
Felix

And here are the characters who will be eligible for the next Returners Tournament who weren't eligible last year (You have to have missed the last two contests in order to be eligible for the Returners Tournament):

Diablo
Midgar Zolom
Toad
Bomberman
Bidoof
Sam Fisher
Little Mac

Out of all those, I figure Diablo might be the favorite, but with Arthas stinkin' up the joint this year, that might reflect badly on him. Speaking of which, do you guys take Kefka > Diablo now?

Vote-ins were awesome, and I 100% support making them a regular part of the contest. This is the best batch of 13-16s we've had, and a good number of them probably miss the contest otherwise. Heck, I would even support making more spots require a vote-in. Maybe 11-seed and down?

Or at the very least, have the biggest seeding differential from one contest to the next?

Although I would like maybe a rule where if you won your play-in last time around in it that if you qualify for the play-in you get automatically in rather than have to earn your way in again, and it helps give higher 13s a better seed.

Missingno winning this contest would top L-Block, because it would come in a relevant format.

Not only that, but how long did L-Block get to hang around and build up the bandwagon before it reached the upper echelon of characters?

L-Block didn't reach the Noble Nine until Round 3, and placed in second to Snake there (and in fact placed in second to Kirby and Kratos in the preceding rounds). L-Block didn't even place first in a match until the Quarterfinals (Round 4).

Missingno winning would require it to outright and officially break the Noble Nine in Round 1. And then defeat Sephiroth in Round 3 en route to facing Link in the finals. In Round 1 L-Block was losing to Kirby and in Round 3 L-Block was losing to Snake.

It's just on another level, even before the format is accounted for.

Is Vincent not hated by the board or something?

I have a few theories for this; this is the first FFVII match that hasn't started in the dead zone for Europe. The night matches start around 5am here which explains their steady rise as Europe wakes up and America goes to sleep. So the US is the main voting demographic in the early hours of night matches and we all know how the US hates FF7 in comparison to Europe. Day matches; Europe is now wide awake and makes sure FFVII doesn't get it's horrible early vote. I think this factor could be crucial in Seph/Snake's day battle as well. I doubt Snake will be able to hold the lead for long.

I also think it's related to how this is the first FFVII match I can remember where it's getting a higher percentage in the US than the international average. The US always undershoots FFVII by 2-4% depending on what it's up against. This is of course because Guybrush is a remarkable case, probably the only guy whose European support stands up to FF7's.
Denzokuken | Posted 2/13/2010 2:35:11 PM | message detail

As an addition this is also why I'm more worried about Cloud/Samus than I am Seph/Snake. Sure Cloud has his night vote but will it be worth anything if he gets buried by Samus early on and Nintendo lovers activate the barriers? Samus is also clearly stronger than Snake right now and Seph...indirectly...may be stronger than Cloud after Dissidia...nah, I won't quite consider that though Marth/Ridley says quite the opposite.
KingBartz | Posted 2/13/2010 2:39:19 PM | message detail
I think Bartz could be potentially high-fodder after Dissidia.

MORE LIKE LOW MID-CARD M I RITE??

Seriously though, Bartz is untested. I would love for him to get in one of these times. And despite the talk of Guybrush being bad for the stats discussion, we've filled up almost 500 posts talking about him.

Kirby jumped from a 14 seed in 2002 to a 3 seed in 2003. Lightning would need a 5 seed to match that jump, which is possible.

Anti-votes only matter so much. When Guybrush doesn't have much strength as it is, the weight of those anti-votes lessens. The stronger a character is, the more those anti-votes matter.

Yeah, unless FFXIII absolutely bombs, I'd imagine Lightning would probably get a 5 seed next contest, if not slightly better. I mean, she'll have to wait probably a full year at least before she gets a chance, but we'll see.

I'm very interested to see how FFXIII stacks up to the rest of the series, and I hope Bacon runs a "Which FF game is your favorite?" poll after the contest is over.

Except we still get all the "Board 8 Hard-on" fodder losers like the Fails crew and Wander. If we had more people nominating PLUS the vote-ins, we'd have a balanced bracket where the losers get the beatings they deserve and all the midcarders get interesting 8-9 seeded matchups. As is, we have hosers like Guybrush as a 9 seed and Yuri Lowell (whoever the hell that is, since she's apparantly different from that other turbofodder loser Yuri) getting a 7 seed. The only entertainment these clowns can provide is to be reduced to 10-15% on Noble Niners.

You know, I wonder if Big Daddy wins his vote-in poll if Andrew Ryan isn't in it with him. That would've been pretty impressive considering Liquid, Rikku, and Frog were all in that one, and he barely lost to Liquid.
